When I was a third year student in the Department of
Natural Sciences of Physicomathematic School at the University of
Athens , I worked as field geologist for three years at the Department
of Geology of the Nuclear Research Center "Demokritos" (later
renamed as National Center of Research of Physical Sciences
"Demokritos") of the Greek Atomic Energy Commission .
Throughout both my professional career and my graduate
studies in Canada I was involved in exploration of uranium deposits. In
parallel with Exploration Geology for the location of Energy minerals
in Greece and Canada, we created in January 1986, the Mineralogical
Magazine ORYKTOLOGIKA NEA - NEWS ON MINERALS and
GeMin Exhibition for Collectors.
Some collectors collect as many mineralogical species as they
can, other collectors collect excellent aesthetic mineral specimens and
crystals for investment, there are collectors who collect minerals
which they find them themselves in the field , other collectors collect
mineral specimens of a single country, a region or even a mine, while
others collect a single mineral , e.g. fluorite, from various regions of
the Earth. Some collectors collect fluorescent minerals or even
radioactive minerals.
For first time in my life after many years of mineralogical
activity and contribution in Exploration Geology , I met a junior Greek
collector of radioactive minerals , Mr. Evangelos Leivadas and in this
issue we present part of his collection.
The collection of radioactive minerals presents a peculiarity,
because these minerals emit radiation and the collection , identification
and presentation of such a collection requires attention and additional
expertise.

Radioactive minerals are minerals that contain in their composition radioactive elements e.g. uranium and along
with solid fossil fuels, e.g. lignite, peat and Geothermal Potential belong to energy minerals.
The most important primary uranium ore minerals are uraninite and the colloidal massive variety pitchblende. The
secondary uranium minerals, however, are more widespread and more numerous than the primary uranium
minerals. Secondary uranium minerals are found in weathered and oxidized zones of primary deposits and also in
sandstones. We went through Bibliography and we found for our readers an excellent book for the collectors of
radioactive minerals which we present it below for you.

geographically and by the conditions which created the radioactive elements. Then they are arranged into four

the thematical collector of radioactive minerals.

Many elements have isotopes that are unstable, their nuclei decay in others and release energy
and is called radioactivity. So we should mention that the thematic collectors of radioactive minerals
should ensure the correct placement of radioactive minerals in boxes and the boxes should be placed
in a cabinet specially protected by lead sheets and double or triple leadglass. The showcase should be
at some distance from access to other people in the house. Also after each purchase, exchange or study
of radioactive minerals, collectors should wash their hands, while it is desirable to have a radioactivity
counter, to measure and to know the intensity of the radiation emitted by their collection. Of course
with the passage of time and the growth of the collection it may be possible that radioactive mineral
collectors to donate their collection to a university or specialized research institution, because of the
special characteristics of such a collection.
It is good idea if the collectors of radioactive minerals have a radioactivity counter, to be able to
measure the intensity of the radioactivity which emit individual samples of their collection, but also the
