en ILAFA para reducir los niveles de incertidumbre, entregando a los lectores cifras tiles del
mercado siderrgico latinoamericano.

is a reflection of ILAFAs efforts to reduce uncertainty levels, providing readers with useful figures about the Latin American steel market.
El contexto internacional ha cambiado drsticamente, volviendo a China uno de sus principales

actores, mientras que las mayores exigencias
ambientales y los cambios que se produjeron en
el sistema de fijacin de precios del mineral de
hierro han impulsado a la industria siderrgica

The international scenario has changed drastically, turning China into one of its main players,
while more environmental requirements and the
modifications to the iron ore pricing system drove
the international steel industry to become more
flexible and adaptable.

World steel market
La recuperacin de la industria siderrgica a nivel mundial ha tenido varias velocidades. Mientras los mercados desarrollados han tenido una
lenta y frgil recuperacin, los mercados emergentes han tenido una recuperacin particularmente dinmica.
The steel industry at world level has recovered at

different paces. While developed markets have
had a slow and fragile recovery; emerging markets have experienced a particularly dynamic recovery.
Tras la crisis global, el escenario internacional

cambi definitivamente de centro de gravedad,
volvindose Asia, y China en especial, un actor
del mercado que marca las tendencias.
No obstante, la crisis de la Unin Europea ha
provocado nuevos desequilibrios y los niveles
de incertidumbre de 2010 no han sido menores

After the global crisis, the international scenario

changed its center of gravity definitely, turning
Asia and China especially, into a trendsetting
market player.
However, the European Union crisis has caused

El mercado de las materias primas siderrgicas

ha estado marcado por reiterados cambios durante estos ltimos aos.
The market of raw materials for the steel industry

has been marked by many changes in the last
years.
Adems de una nueva presin al alza de los precios, el sector siderrgico ha tenido que enfrentar un nuevo desafo: el fin del benchmarking y
la emergencia de un sistema de precios trimestrales para el mineral de hierro.
Besides the new upward pressure on prices, the

steel industry has had to face a new challenge:
the end of the benchmarking system and the rise
of a quarterly pricing system for iron ore.
Con esto, la industria siderrgica ha tenido que

adaptarse y modificar sus modelos de negocios,
en una situacin donde no le ser posible traspasar tan directamente los costos de la materia
prima a sus clientes y por ello tendr que fijar
precios del acero que no tienen la movilidad de
los precios de la materia prima.
Todava no queda claro si el sistema trimestral
es un primer paso hacia un sistema que podra
llegar a ser mensual o no, ni si el sistema se
aplicar solamente al mineral de hierro o se extender a otros materiales.
Thus, the steel industry has had to adapt itself

and modify its business models, in a context
where it will not be possible for it to transfer raw
materials costs to its customers directly and, therefore, it will have to set steel prices that are not
as flexible as raw materials prices.
It is still unclear whether the quarterly pricing
system is a first step to a monthly pricing model
nor if it is going to be applied only to iron ore or
be extended to other raw materials.

La recuperacin econmica de Amrica Latina

ha sido revisada al alza reiteradas veces durante el presente ao, ya que se mostr ms dinmica y slida que lo esperado.

expected.
En total, se espera que la regin crezca este ao

this year, with an apparent steel use of more
