2. Description
2.1 General description
The SAPHYDOSE i dosimeter is an individual, self-sufficient, pocketsize dosimeter displaying the individual
dose equivalent Hp(10) in real time for X and rays. It is in compliance with the IEC 61283 standard. It is
used in the X and fields, the energy of which is between 50 keV and 6 MeV and fields, the energy of
which is upper than 2 MeV. It cannot measure a criticality flash. However, this criticality flash can cause an
electronic failure.
It is class 1, i.e. it saves the dose equivalent information recorded under all normal circumstances.
The dosimeter is powered by one or two 3.6 V lithium battery.
The SAPHYDOSE i exists in two versions: individual and system.
It has a large range of configuration options, which will be detailed later.
It is provided with several alarms informing the user of a device dysfunction or a too significant dose
received. Those alarms are constituted by a sound (buzzer) and an indicator light (red light-emitting diode).
The individual dose equivalent measure Hp(10) is done by two back-to-back silicon diodes so that the
dosimeter is 360 isotropic for 60Co.

circumstances.

2.5 Additional indications

Low batteries : When the batteries voltage is too weak, the display screen is flashing to warn of a possible
shutdown during the mission. It has to be sent to maintenance.
If the electric cells voltage reaches a critical threshold, it becomes out of order, saves the last collected
information and displays ESBAT.
Detector damage : If the detector is awry, the message ESSI is displayed and the buzzer emits a
continuous sound during 20 s. The detector self-test is done for each start-up of the SAPHYDOSE i and
each 30 s when the user is in controlled zone.
Over-range : The symbol '' is displayed in a continuous way when the dose equivalent is over the
display range, or flashing when the dose equivalent rate is over the dose equivalent rate range.
Recommended maintenance : The symbol '
' is displayed in continuous way as soon as it is
necessary :
- in Out of Order mode
- Prior to the period of the over maintenance,
- Low batteries
Dosimeter not carried : If no movement is happening during a predefined period, the ' : ' symbol is
displayed in continuous. This configuration option must be order.

2.6 Accessories
The SAPHYDOSE i communicates through electromagnetic coupling. It is compatible with all types of
existing SAPHYMO readers:
-

SAPHYR G
LMF (MultiFunction Reader).

The communication is used to know and modify the state of the dosimeter by reading from and writing to the
RAM and EPROM's internal to the dosimeter.
No added device is needed for a dosimeter in individual version of the SAPHYDOSE I. Nevertheless, the
Easydose G software provide to users more possibilities of uses.
For a dosimeter in system version, an entrance reader like a SAPHYR interface or a LMF is needed to switch
on in zone mode and to load information of the mission in the dosimeter. To switch off it and read the data
about the past mission, an exit reader like a SAPHYR interface or a LMF is required.

2.6.1 SAPHYR G
Communication interface for the SAPHYDOSE i. That's a device to communicate between a PC and a
SAPHYDOSE i :
- Data reading
- Dosimeters parameter settings

2.6.2 LMF
The LMF (MultiFunction Reader) for SAPHYDOSE i is an independent reader. Placed at the boundary of
the controlled zone, it reads and sets the dosimeters and sends the data to the centralisation computer. It
can control a system of turnstile or radiation fix monitors.

3.2 Use
There are two versions (possible configurations) of the SAPHYDOSE g i :

3.2.1 Individual version

The dosimeter in individual version has three possible functioning states:
Two normal functioning states:
- Shutdown(OFF)
- In Zone (EZ)
One device defect state:
- Out of order (ES)
In individual version, the user thanks to the two push buttons generally executes the dose equivalent reset.
The dose equivalent reset by push buttons is a configuration option. The dose equivalent reset at the startup or the functions of communication with the reader can also be used to realise this operation.
Entry in Zone:
OFF

- Start-up with push buttons EZ

Leaving from Zone:

EZ

- Shutdown by push buttons OFF

3.2.2 System version

In system version, the dosimeter has four possible functioning states:
Three normal functioning states:
- Shutdown (OFF)
- Out of Zone (OZ)
- In Zone (EZ)
One device defect state:
- Out of Order (ES)
In system version, the start-up, the shutdown of the dosimeter and the dose equivalent reset are generally
done by a reader.
The start-up, (OFF to OZ), the shutdown of the dosimeter (OZ to OFF) and the dose equivalent reset by
push buttons are configuration options.
The system version is characterised by the temporary state Out of Zone (OZ). In this state, the indication
OZ is displayed. The peripherals are on standby: the dosimeter then does not calculate the dose
equivalent, but it can still communicate with a reader.
The push buttons permit:
- Name display
- Thresholds display
- Dose equivalent reset(option)
- Dosimeter shutdown (option)

9 / 23

Rf. 29290374 rv. A December 2005

Entry in Zone:
OFF

- Entrance reader OZ Entrance reader EZ

The reader checks the state of the dosimeter after the start-up (OFFOZ) and then modifies the mission
parameters: worker name, worker number, alarms thresholds, dose equivalent reset. After all that, the
reader activates the dosimeter (OZEZ).
Leaving from Zone:
EZ

- Exit reader OZ - Exit reader OFF

The reader checks the state of the dosimeter (EZOZ) and then saves all the data of the mission: worker
name, worker number, dose equivalent, maximal dose equivalent rate during the missionAfter all that,
the reader realises the shutdown of the dosimeter (OZOFF).

3.2.3 Precautions for use

Do not use the SAPHYDOSE i if it appears to be damaged.
Do not open the SAPHYDOSE i unless maintenance operations.
Manipulate the SAPHYDOSE I with some attention. If it is dropped repeatedly or from a high point,
batteries or the electronic could be damaged or might turn off the dosimeter.
Do not immerse the SAPHYDOSE i in any liquid. It is sealed against trickling liquids (IP 54) but not
against prolonged immersion.
To prevent the SAPHYDOSE i from turning off during use, when the "low" storage battery indication
appears (display flashing), the dosimeter must be sent to maintenance for batteries change.
The SAPHYDOSE i is provided with one or two lithium batteries. They should not be thrown in the trash
can, burned, disassembled, or immersed in any kind of liquid otherwise they might leak or explode.
The SAPHYDOSE i must be carried on the chest. The dosimeter panel with the operating guide and the
push buttons must be against the body. So, the user can correctly read what is displayed on the screen.
CAUTION! A bad position of the dosimeter on the body may give incorrect measures.

10 / 23

Rf. 29290374 rv. A December 2005

3.3 Maintenance
3.3.1 Recurring
An independent warning system is provided on the SAPHYDOSE i to indicate the maintenance period.
The period between two maintenance operations is a parameter ranging from 0 to 255 weeks (5 years) by
1 week step. This is indicated by the continuous display of the
symbol, once this period has elapsed.
This period is generally set to 52 weeks.

3.3.2 Corrective
The SAPHYDOSE i is also provided with self-test systems checking the correct working of the main
functions. Whether the dosimeter doesn't work, an anomaly message is been displaying (ESSI, ESM1,
ESM2, ESBAT,...). They indicate the dosimeter is out of order and must be sent to corrective maintenance.
If no sound is produced, if the indicator light does not illuminate, or if the display is not fully lit during the
SAPHYDOSE i start-up self-test, the dosimeter must be sent to the corrective maintenance as users
could not get all suitable information.

11 / 23

Rf. 29290374 rv. A December 2005

4. Dosimeter mode
4.1 Shutdown mode (OFF)
4.1.1 Functioning description
This is the SAPHYDOSE i rest mode. The dosimeter is in standby. Nevertheless, It could be send and
receive message from suitable reader (a serial interface for example).
The SAPHYDOSE i can be turned off by following manners:
by push buttons, this way depend of the working mode and the setting.
with an exit reader.
In the rest mode, the dosimeter checks the battery power every ten minutes.

4.1.2 Interfaces state

The dosimeter is displaying "OFF" continuously, unless maintenance is recommended; a wrench will then
appear on the display.

4.1.2.1 Recommended maintenance symbol

The SAPHYDOSE i reminds the maintenance time thanks to an automatic function. The period between
two maintenance operations is a parameter ranging from 0 to 255 weeks (5 years) by step of 1 week. This
is indicated by a continuous display of the
symbol.
Remark: In a reader, the flashing of the indicator light shows the right communication.

4.1.3 Feasible actions on the dosimeter in Shutdown mode

The unique action allowed in the rest mode is the start-up of the dosimeter. In any case, you can get it with
an entrance reader. if the dosimeter is in individual version and the start-up by push buttons option is
enabled, you also can switch on it with a 3 seconds pressure on the VAL push button.

12 / 23

Rf. 29290374 rv. A December 2005

4.1.3.1 Self-test at the start-up

At start-up, the dosimeter checks the reliability of parameters and data in EEPROMs, tests the battery
voltage, display unit, indicator light, buzzer, and the gamma sensor.
During the self-test, the display, the indicator light, the buzzer are activated for 0.5 second and deactivated
two times successively. Simultaneously, the EEPROMs, the battery, and the detector are checked.
The detector self-test indicates whether or not the detector is working correctly. If the detector is defective,
the ESSI message appears on the LCD screen, the buzzer produces a continuous sound for 20 seconds.
The results of this test, in case of error, are displayed only after the self-test sequence.
During the self-test at start-up, the SAPHYDOSE i follows this sequence:
- Complete activation of the display and the indicator light, extinction of the buzzer (for
0.5 s)
- Complete extinction of the display and of the indicator light, activation of the buzzer (for
0.5 s)
- Complete activation of the display and the light indicator, extinction of the buzzer (for
0.5 s)
- Complete extinction of the display and of the light indicator, activation of the buzzer (for
0.5 s)
The user must check if this sequence is correctly executed. If no sound is produced, if the indicator light
does not illuminate, or if the display is not fully lit during the SAPHYDOSE i start-up self-test, the
dosimeter should be sent to corrective maintenance.

4.1.3.2 Communication
The communication is operated whatever the dosimeter mode. The communication modify parameters in
EEPROM. Be careful, parameters will be written in RAM only at the next re-initialisation. Thus, the new
parameters will be considered just after a new start-up.
The communication also allows to read many data (name, worker number , integrated dose,...etc. ) of the
last mission to be analysed.

4.2 In Zone mode (EZ)

4.2.1 Functioning description
It is the active mode of the SAPHYDOSE i. The dosimeter calculates the dose equivalent and manages
alarms. It is characterised by the display of the dose equivalent.
The SAPHYDOSE i switches to active mode in the following way :
- In individual version, after the self-test at start-up executed by a 3-second pression on
the VAL button, or by a reader.
- In system version, the switch to this mode is obtained after the insertion of the
SAPHYDOSE i in the entrance reader.
Periodically, the SAPHYDOSE i tests the battery voltage, the gamma detector and checks the dosimeter
is actually carried by the user.

4.2.1.1 Gamma detector self-test

It is a pseudo-periodic test (every 30 s) to check the state of the detector.
If the result of the test is wrong, the dosimeter switches to the mode Out of Order with the display of ESSI
and produces a 20 seconds continuous sound.

4.2.1.2 Battery self-test

The Battery self-test are executed every 10 minutes. According to the measured voltage, the dosimeter:
- remains in its mode
- switches in low battery mode with a flashing display and the presence of the wrench
to warn of a possible shut-down
- switches in "Out of Order" mode (electric cells too weak)

4.2.1.3 Movement detection

This test checks if the dosimeter is carried by the user. If there is no movement during a pre-select period,
the dosimeter is considered as not carried for a part of the mission at least.
The period is settable to a value between 1 and 255 minutes by step of 1 minute. The movement detection
is executed only in the mode In Zone, nevertheless, this configuration option had to be chosen at the
order.
If there is no movement during the defined period and the configuration option about the movement sensor
is enabled, the symbol ":" is scribing on the screen. This display is kept until the switch to the Out of Zone
mode or the shutdown of the dosimeter. Even if this display option is disabled, the result is saved. In the
system version, the result can be communicated via the reader to the dosimetry centralisation system.

4.2.1.4 Dose record

This function allows the dose equivalent time-depending record and is available only by dialogue with the
reader.
This record is a list of 255 values maximum corresponding to the dose equivalent received for a time
interval ranging from 30 seconds to two hours by 30-second step.
The dose recorded is reset at the same time as the dose equivalent.

4.2.2 Interfaces states

The dosimeter displays the dose equivalent.

4.2.2.2 Alarm priority

From the most to the least having-priority dose equivalent and dose equivalent rate alarms:
- Dose equivalent rate over-range
- Dose equivalent over-range
- Dose equivalent rate alarm
- Dose equivalent rate pre-alarm
- Dose equivalent alarm
- Dose equivalent pre-alarm
If the dose equivalent alarm (pre-alarm or alarm) and the dose equivalent rate are working at the same
time, the SAPHYDOSE i drives the buzzer and the indicator light to only indicate the dose equivalent rate
alarm.
If the dose equivalent threshold is exceeded during the 20 seconds of dose equivalent pre-alarm work, the
dose equivalent pre-alarm is immediately stopped and replaced by the dose equivalent alarm.
The system alarms have no priority. The detector and very-Low-battery alarms oblige the dosimeter to
switch to the Out of Order mode and have a maximal priority. Other ones are just advertisements.

4.2.2.3 Recommended maintenance symbol

The SAPHYDOSE i reminds the maintenance time thanks to an automatic function. The period between
two maintenance operations is a parameter ranging from 0 to 255 weeks (5 years) by step of 1 week. This
is indicated by the continuous display of the
symbol once this period has elapsed.

4.2.2.4 Over-range symbol

Like all measurements devices, the SAPHYDOSE i has functioning limits. Dose equivalent and dose
equivalent rate have got use ranges.
The flashing symbol means the dosimeter has been irradiated by a dose equivalent rate exceeding
the maximum rate permitting a correct measure of the dose equivalent. Then, the dose equivalent
displayed is probably lower than the real one.
The continuous symbol is about the dose equivalent over-range. If the dosimeter is set to fixed
decimal point display, when the dose equivalent calculated by the dosimeter is upper than 999.99 mSv, the
device displays continuous and 999.99 mSv. When the dosimeter is set to floating decimal point
display, when the dose equivalent calculated is upper than 9999.9 mSv, the device displays and
9999.9 mSv.

4.2.2.5 No movement symbol :

To check if the SAPHYDOSE i is carried by the user, a function detects movements. The no movement
period is a parameter ranging from 1 to 255 minutes (4.25 hours) by step of 1 minute. The movement
detection is done only when the SAPHYDOSE i is In Zone mode and this configuration operation is
selected.
If there is no movement during the defined period and the configuration option concerning the display
relative to the movement sensor is enabled, the symbol ":" is scribing on the screen. This display is held
until the change to the Out of Zone mode or the shutdown of the dosimeter. Even if this display option is
disabled, the result is saved.

16 / 23

Rf. 29290374 rv. A December 2005

4.2.2.6 Buzzer indications

A beep can be emitted each 1 Sv or 10 Sv integrated. It is a configuration option.
Beeps for 20 seconds with a 0.5-second period and cyclic ratio of mean the SAPHYDOSE i has
reached the threshold pre-alarm of the dose equivalent.
Beeps of a 0.250-second period and cyclic ration of mean the SAPHYDOSE i has reached the dose
equivalent alarm threshold. The carrier must go toward a lower-level gamma radiation zone. This beeps
emission will stop only when the dosimeter switches to the Out of zone or Shutdown mode.
Beeps of a 1-second period and a cyclic ration of mean the SAPHYDOSE i has reached the dose
equivalent rate pre-alarm threshold. The buzzer will shut down when the dose equivalent rate is lower than
the alarm threshold.
A continuous sound means the dose equivalent rate has exceeded the alarm threshold. The carrier is in
a zone where the dose equivalent rate is very important. So, he must moved away from it. The buzzer will
shut down when the dose equivalent rate will be lower than the threshold.
Remark: A beep also indicates that the pression on a push button is taken into account.

4.2.2.7 Indicator light indications

A light flash can be emitted each integrated 1 Sv or 10 Sv. It is an option configuration. This flash can
be disabled.
Light flashes for 20 seconds with a 0.5-second period and cyclic ratio of mean the SAPHYDOSE i
has reached the dose equivalent pre-alarm.
Light flashes of a 0.250-second period and cyclic ration of mean the SAPHYDOSE i has reached the
dose equivalent alarm threshold. The carrier must go toward a lower-level gamma radiation zone. This light
flashes emission will stop only when the dosimeter switches to the Out of Zone or Shutdown mode.
Light flashes of a 1-second period and a cyclic ration of mean the SAPHYDOSE i has just reached
the dose equivalent rate pre-alarm threshold. This light flashes emission will stop when the dose equivalent
rate is lower than the threshold.
A continuous sound and light flashes of a 0.250-second period and cyclic ratio of mean the
SAPHYDOSE i has reached the dose equivalent alarm threshold. This light flashes emission will stop
when the dose equivalent rate is lower than the threshold.
Remark: In a reader, light flashes indicate the well-proven of the communication.

4.3 Out of Zone (OZ)

4.3.1 Functioning description
It is the intermediary mode of the SAPHYDOSE i, used in the system version for :
- when the user is entering in zone, after the start-up of the dosimeter
- when the user is leaving the zone, after the insertion of the dosimeter in an exit reader.
In this functioning mode, the dosimeter is on standby.
In OZ mode, battery self-test is executed every 10 minutes.

4.3.2 Interfaces state

The dosimeter displays OZ.
Remark: In a reader, light flashes indicate that the communication is set up.

4.3.2.1 Recommended maintenance symbol

The SAPHYDOSE i reminds the maintenance time thanks to an automatic function. The period between
two maintenance operations is a parameter ranging from 0 to 255 weeks (5 years) by step of 1 week. This
is indicated by the continuous display of the
symbol once this period has elapsed.

4.3.3 Feasible actions on the dosimeter in 'Out of Zone' mode

When the button SEL is pressed, the message NAME is displayed. Then, either the carrier name is
displayed by pressing the button VAL, either the following function (alarm thresholds display) is selected by
pressing the button SEL.
Remark: To cancel, one has to wait for 5 seconds then the display switches to the display OZ (Out of
Zone).
The message THRES means the selected function is the alarm thresholds display function. The choice of
the alarm thresholds display function can be confirmed by pressing the button VAL or the following function
(dose reset) can be selected by pressing the button SEL.
Remark: To cancel, one has to wait for 5 seconds then the display switches to the display OZ (Out of
Zone).
The message RESET (option) means the selected function is the dose equivalent reset. The choice of the
dose equivalent reset function can be confirmed by pressing the button VAL or the following function
(dosimeter shutdown) can be selected by pressing the button SEL.
Remark: To cancel, one has to wait for 5 seconds then the display switches to the display OZ (Out of
Zone).
The message STOP (option) means the selected function is the dosimeter shutdown. The choice of the
dosimeter shutdown function can be confirmed by pressing the button VAL or the display can switch to the
dose equivalent display, preceded by the message DOSE, by pressing the button SEL.
Remark: To cancel, one has to wait for 5 seconds then the display switches to the display OZ (Out of
Zone).
Remark: A beep also indicates that the pression on a push button is taken into account.

4.4 Out of Order (ES)

4.4.1 Functioning description
It is the default mode of the SAPHYDOSE i .The dosimeter is on standby. The dosimeter displays ES
followed by the noticed defect and the wrench.

4.4.2 Interfaces state

The message ESBAT means the dosimeter is out of order because the electric cells are discharged.
The flashing display of the dose equivalent warns the user the electric cells are too weak.
The message ESSI means the dosimeter is out of order. It has detected a gamma detector defect.
The message ESI2C means the dosimeter is out of order. It has detected an I2C defect.
The message ESM1 means the dosimeter is out of order. It has detected a mistake in communication with
the main memory of the dosimeter.
The message ESM1x means the dosimeter is out of order. It has detected a mistake of data in the memory
area x of the dosimeter main memory.
The message ESM2 means the dosimeter is out of order. It has detected a mistake in communication with
the detector memory.
The message ESM2x means the dosimeter is out of order. It has detected a mistake of data in the memory
area x of the detector memory.
Remark: In a reader, light flashes indicate that the communication is set up.
Remark: A continuous sound for 20 seconds means the dosimeter has been considered as defective. The
message ESXXX is also displayed. The dosimeter is out of order, cannot measure dose equivalent
anymore and the carrier must go toward a lower-level gamma radiation zone. The dosimeter has to be sent
to maintenance.

4.4.3 Feasible actions on the dosimeter in 'Out of Order' mode

None, the dosimeter must be sent to maintenance.
Remark: The dose data (dose equivalent, time depending record,...) are saved and can be collected via a
reader.

5. Annex
5.1 Push buttons uses
Two push buttons are located on one of the two large side (the one opposite to the clip, under the label), the
SEL button and the VAL button. They allow a manual access to any functions, in function of the sequence.
An operating guide is written under the push buttons.
According to the dosimeter state, buttons allow to read some data (alarm thresholds, user name) and give
access to different functions: start-up, shutdown and reset.
Buttons use according to the dosimeter state:
- In the reader or Out of Order mode, the pressure on the push buttons is not taken into
account.
- In the Off state, the continuous pressure on the button VAL during three seconds
permits the start-up of the dosimeter. In system version, the self-test is followed by the
Out of Zone mode. In individual version, the dosimeter switches to the In Zone mode.
- In the In Zone or Out of Zone mode, without taking into account the possible
configuration options, the dosimeter follows the functioning described in the diagram.
When the pressure on the push button is take into account, a 0.125ms sound is
emitted.
For the disabled functions, according to the configuration of the reset and the shutdown by buttons in system
version, the dosimeter switches directly to the following state. If the both are disabled, the dosimeter switches
to the display of DOSE.
