The S1 interface connects an eNodeB to the Evolved Packet

Core (EPC). This allows both signalling and data to be
transferred between EPC and E-UTRAN.

S1-MME
The control plane of the S1 (S1-MME) interface allows
signalling with the MME.
MME and UE will exchange non-access stratum signaling
via eNB through this interface
e.g.: if a UE performance a tracking area update the
TRACKING AREA UPDATE REQUEST message will be sent
from UE to eNB and the eNB will forward the message via
S1-MME to the MME.
S1AP: S1 Application Protocol
S1-U
The user plane of the S1 (S1-UP) interface allows application
data transfer through the Serving Gateway.
It is a pure user data interface.
GTP-U is the application protocol that tunnels the user data
between eNB and SGW.
Which serving GW a users SAE bearer will have to use is
signaled from MME to this User

Interface between MME and HSS.

It enables transfer of subscription and

authentication data for
authenticating/authorizing user access to the

S5 Interface
The S5 interface connects the Serving Gateway to the
Packet Data Network (PDN) Gateway.
Both control plane signalling and user plane data use
the S5 interface.
The PDN Gateway provides connectivity to the set of
IP services so the S5 represents the main connection
for application data across the Evolved Packet Core
S5 is used If Serving GW and PDN GW belong to the
same network (non-roaming case)

S8 Interface
The S8 interface is similar to the S5
interface but it terminates at a PDN
Gateway belonging to a different PLMN.
This interface is used by end-users who are
roaming away from their home PLMN

S10

S10 Interface
Interface between MME and other MME
Reference point between MMEs for MME relocation (e.g handover) and
MME to MME information transfer.
Used during inter-MME tracking area updates
S10 is a pure signaling interface, no user data runs on it.

S11

S11 Interface
This is the interface between the MME and S-GW.
This allows signalling information for mobility and bearer
management to be transferred.
Application data does not use the S11 interface
A single MME can handle multiple Serving GW each one with
its own S11 interface

external data network
It is either IPv4 or IPv6 based
This interface corresponds to the Gi
interface in 2G/3G networks.
Standardized in 3GPP TS29.061:
Interworking between the PLMN
supporting packet based service and
PDN

Other LTE Interfaces

S3
It is the interface between SGSN and MME
Enables user and bearer information exchange for inter 3GPP access network mobility in idle and/or active state
based on Gn reference point as defined between SGSNs
S4
It provides the user plane with related control and mobility support between SGSN and the SGW
Based on Gn reference point as defined between SGSN and GGSN
S7
It provides transfer of (QoS) policy and charging rules from Policy and Charging Rules Function (PCRF) to Policy and Charging
Enforcement Function (PCEF) in the PDN GW
S9
Interface between HPCRF and VPCRF is used in roaming cases
It is used in VPLMN for the enforcement of Dynamic control policies from the HPLMN
S12
Direct Tunnel from the serving Gateway to RNC
S12 is the user plane Interface used for Tunneling user data directly between the S-GW and UTRAN
This Would allow to forward packet data from 3G RAN to the serving Gateway to the PDN Gateway
S2
Provides the connectivity to non 3GPP access network(WLAN, WiMAX, 3GPP2)
SGs
Provides the connectivity between MME and MSS

25
