Week of January 3rd

Happenings in

Our Learning
Writing & Reading: We are continuing to prep for STAAR
Ready Writing on January 19th by taking STAAR
practice questions. Students are identifying and
labeling the type of skill each question is targeting to
make their thinking visible and recognize which skills
they need to focus on more. One of those skills we
honed in on this week was spelling common
homophones and using them in context
appropriately. We read A Little Pigeon Toad and
identified homophones and homographs. Students
have also been loving our class read aloud, The Thing
About Georgie, while making insightful inferences. As
individuals, we each wrote our own mantra for the
new year. Students used a plus/delta chart to
evaluate what they are already good at and areas of
improvement (in terms of relationships and/or
academics). Their mantras act as a mindset they want
to develop and can be applied to daily situations.
Math: Students discovered how to simplify and find
equivalent fractions. They used this knowledge to help
them compare fractions with (initially) different
denominators. They better understand unit fractions
and prime numbers and how to list multiples of a
number to find denominators least common multiple.
Science: Students added to/adjusted their schemas
about the moon and its relation to Earth and the Sun.
Weve studied the phases of the moon and will
continue to deepen our understanding as we trace
our shadows next week at different points in the day.

Additional Notes
Students took an inventory of their
school supplies Friday. Please check
to see if they are in need of
restocking!

home in Friday Folders. Please sign
the envelop and one of the reports
to be returned on Monday. You may
keep the second copy.
Science Fair experiments are due

Practice at Home
One session of XtraMath per night is
still required to be completed

great resource to assess skills weve
been learning in class.
Students can practice responding to
expository prompts using their own
Smore graphic organizer to plan.
STAAR Ready Writing will be on
January 19th.
Students can record their minutes on
their Six Flags Reading Record Log.
Logs are due February 10th.
