6th Grade Chemical Reaction Review

Objective: Students will identify the formation of a new substance by evidence of

a chemical change.
DOL: Students will identify examples as either physical changes or chemical
reactions.
6.5D: Identify the formation of a new substance by using the evidence of a
possible chemical change such as production of a gas, change in
temperature, production of a precipitate, or color change.
Day 1
Do-Now: (5 minutes)
Once students are seated they are to take out their latest science fair checkpoint
and have it out so I can check them. Then they are to open their ISNs, copy a
question, and answer it:

Are bananas ripening a physical change or a chemical change?

Mini-lesson: (15 minutes)

I will discuss the banana question and explain how fruit ripening is actually a
chemical change. With the banana we can tell because we see an unexpected
color change over time. I will discuss some other changes we observe as fruit
ripens as well and connect this to previous learning about the evidence of a
chemical reaction.
I will then do a demo where I show how glow sticks produce light and how, when
submerged in hot or cold water, the speed of the reaction increases or decreases
respectively. Well discuss our observations and compare the change we see in
the glow stick to similar changes we might see with a banana.

Physical Change or Chemical Reaction Group Practice: (15 minutes)

Students will group at their tables and participate in a kahoot (kahoot.it) on their
personal devices.
DOL: (10 minutes)

Students will individually identify examples as either physical changes or

chemical reactions on a piece of paper.
