8 Assumptions

Introduction

As a lab project proposal, we were required to submit a proposal, signifying any complex engineering
problem. Vibrations and Control ought to be main aspects of this project, I have interest in these fields
and I was able to find a team of fervent & passionate fellows so we chose Active suspension system to be
our Lab Project. Details will be discussed later in this proposal.

Background Information

Below are enlisted objectives of this project and how we understood the need of this project.The only requirement
of project is:
Project should be related to some complex engineering problem of which one has to give solution.
It should have some perspective of Controls or Vibrations
Problem should be well defined and its solution should be given.
One has to suggest a controller for the system he has chosen.
There should be a valid reason for controller one has chosen.
We need to choose assumed values of parameters, we dont know.
Its upto us to choose approach/software to solve the problem.

Objectives
A complex engineering problem related to Controls or Vibrations must be stated.
We ought to give its solution.
Reason for choosing controller type must be stated.
The project needs not to be done practically.
There should be graphs in the projects final report.

Technical Approach

The following steps formulate a generic procedure of how we will approach this problem:
The suspension system of a vehicle will be simplified for ease of modeling.
Criteria of controller design is: Oscillations must die out within 5 seconds.That is settling time = 5sec.
Mathematical modeling will be done analytically (using F = ma)
We will assume magnitude of an interruption and will produce a graph showing open loop response.
Next, a controller will be implemented.
MATLAB will be used to tune tuning paprameters Kp , Ki , Kd (incase all PID control is used)
Close loop response of system, with a controller will be graphed using software.
All graphs will be produced on matlab.

Scope Of Work

Following are the limitations of this project:


We will not prepare a practical tangible model of active suspension.
Project will be done theoretically only.
A project report will be submitted which will have following:

1. A simplified model of active suspension system.


2. Mathematical Model of suspension system.
3. Openloop step response.
4. Suggesting a controller for settling time 5sec.
5. Tuning parameters of controller.
6. Close loop step response.
7. Simulink Diagram of the active suspension system.
Following parameters will be assumed:

1. Tyre stiffness
2. Spring stiffness
3. Damping constant
4. Vehicle weight

The main scientific departments are only three, there is some mathematics involved & other than this, we have
only software based work, however main organizational breakdown can be:
