Question 2B (20 marks)

Read the text below.
Elephants can be found both in Africa and Asia. An African elephant has big, floppy ears
whereas an Asian elephants ears are much smaller.
The Ceylon elephant is an Asian elephant. It lives on the island of Sri Lanka, which used to be
known as Ceylon. Ceylon elephants live mainly in thick, green forests. They spend most of
their time just eating leaves, grass, the tender shoots of plants and fruit. They love to swim in
mud holes and bathe in streams.
A grown-up male elephant is about three metres tall.

The older male elephants live by

themselves. The females live in herds with their young ones and, sometimes, a few young
males. There are usually from ten to fifty elephants in a herd, and the leader is the oldest
female.
Once there were many thousands of wild Ceylon elephants. Today there are fewer than 3000
left. Most of the forests where they once lived have been cut down. They cannot find enough
food in the few parts of the forest that are left. This is why they sometimes leave the forests in
search of food. They cause damage to nearby farms, uprooting plants and vegetables and
destroying fields. Many elephants have been shot by angry farmers.
The Ceylon elephants are in danger of extinction unless their natural habitat is protected.
Circle the correct answer for questions 1-10.
Example:
Elephants can be found .....
