Writing
Materials: students writers notebook, pencil, fact and opinion sentences, fact and opinion headers,
visuals of common foods
Standards: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.K: Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose
informative/explanatory texts in which they name what they are writing about and supply some
information about the topic.
Objectives: I can write informational text.
Procedure:

Ask students What is a fact? Allowing for students to think and discuss what a fact is.
Using the sentences provided, as a class, sort these sentences into facts and opinions
o The apple is red. The apple is yummy. Apples have seeds. Only yellow apples are good.
Give an example fact sentence describing a carrot. The carrot has a green leaf.
o Remind students that it needs to be in sentence form
o Review what a proper sentence looks like: capitalization, spacing and periods.
Have students write fact sentences in their writers notebook choosing a food
o Walk around and check that students are using the correct sentences and that the
sentences are facts.

Assessment: Students will be assessed informally for their sentence structure and use of using
sentences. Students will be taking a writing test at the end of the week to assess their skills in writing
informational texts. The skills that the students are given a point for each item listed: the sentences stay
on topic, the sentences are read to the teacher, the sentence have correct conventions (capitalization,
punctuation, spacing, phonetic spelling, the sentences have a picture, etc.)

Differentiation:

Adaptations: Students who need support will be expected to write at least two fact
sentences. If students are unable to write complete sentences, the facts must be in
statement form. The students can use visuals provided of different foods to help in
writing their sentences. Students will still be expected to use proper conventions of
writing, but prompting and help is available for students who need it. Spacing rulers will
be available for students who need assistance in properly spacing their words.

Extensions: Students who will need extensions will be required to write three sentences
using their sight words. If students have written three fact sentences with the correct
conventions and requirements, I will have them think of ways that they can add more to
their sentences. For example if a student writes, Apples have leaves, I can have them
think of ways to make the sentence more complex such as adding The apple has a stem
and a leaf. This helps them broaden their sentence structure.
