1) DESCRIBE TWO of the Emergent Properties of life and explain why they are
emergent. (2 points)
- Adaptation: Life evolves in response to interactions between organisms and
their environment.
- Reproduction: Organisms reproduce; life comes only from life (bio-genesis)

2) If you suddenly realized that your wallet or purse is missing, how would you use the
scientific method to address the problem? Make sure to list all the steps. (3 points)
- I look through my bags again, search all of the pockets of my backpack just to
double check.
- I think back to how I could possibly lost it.
- I tell myself maybe I should go back to all the places I went prior to where I'm
currently at.
- I go back to places I went, looking carefully on the roads, sidewalk, corridor, to my
car possibly.
- I realized it wasnt at all of the places I went, so I called home, asking if my family if
I accidentally leftmy

purse at home,

and they said yes.

- Now I need to go back home to retrieve my purse.

3) HYPOTHESES

can be far easier to disprove than to prove. Explain. (2 points)

- Einstein said "A thousand scientists cant prove me right, but one can prove

me wrong".

- It is easier to disprove a hypothesis because it would take just one observation

to refute the hypothesis, than it is to prove a hypothesis--because it is
impossible
to test every possible outcome.

4) Describe what it is about the chemistry of CARBON atoms that allows organic
molecules to be so large and complex ? Would any other ELEMENT be able to
substitute for carbon ? Explain. (HINT: talk about energy levels, orbitals, electrons
and bonds.) (2 points)

5) Draw a nitrogen atom (atomic number 7 and mass number 15) showing the protons,
neutrons and electrons. (2 points)

6) Describe the structure of a WATER molecule and explain how that structure allows
water to have some unique properties. (2 points)
- Water is a solvent. Water is a polar molecule with slightly positive and negative
charges, ions and polar molecules can readily dissolve in it.
- Cohesion causes surface tension
- Resists changes in temperature, high heat of vaporization
- Expands when it freezes - hydrogen bonding makes ice less dense than liquid water.

7) List three types of POLYMERS found in cells. Also, list the subunits that make up
each type and explain what functions they have in cells. (3 points)
