Installation precautions

Static electricity can severely damage the electronic components on the controller. When
handling and installing the controller, follow these procedures to avoid damage from static
electricity:

Handle the controller by its bulkhead or edges and avoid touching the components and
the circuitry on the board.

When installing the controller, equalize any static charge difference between your body
and the switch by wearing a grounding wrist strap and attaching it to the switch's metal
body, or by frequently touching the switch's metal body.

The controller has low-force, high-performance connectors. High insertion forces are not
necessary to install the controller, and should not be used.

Ensure the controller is fully inserted. Press the controller into the slot until the bulkhead on the
controller contacts or is very close to contacting the front face of the switch chassis.

When the controller is fully inserted, screw in the two retaining screws to secure the controller
in place.

For safe operation, proper switch cooling, and reduction of electromagnetic emissions, ensure
that a slot cover is installed on any unused controller slot. For safety, no more than one slot
should be uncovered at a time when the switch is powered on.

Respect the temperature specifications for the controller.

When installing the controller into a switch, the switch can be powered on or off. The installation
procedure in this guide assumes the switch is powered on.

4.6 km (15,000 ft)

The maximum operating temperature specification of the chassis is affected by the number and location of the controllers
installed in the chassis. For the 5400 zl chassis, if all four (the maximum number of controllers allowed in a switch)
controllers are installed in the left hand side of the chassis, the maximum operating temperature specification is set to
50C for the chassis. If any controllers are installed on the right hand side of the chassis, then the temperature specification
for the chassis is 40C. A 5406 zl chassis has only three slots on the left. To stay within the 50C temperature specification,
only three controllers are supported in this chassis.
For the 8212 zl chassis, the maximum operating temperature specification is 40C.

Other documentation
For full information on configuring and managing the controller, see the MSM Controllers
Configuration Guide.

3 Initially connecting and configuring

This chapter describes how to connect to the switch, activate a controller, configure the switch for
the controller, and then perform initial controller configuration. Finally, information on restarting
and resetting the controller is provided.

Connect to the switch

Although full information on the switch command line interface (CLI) is provided in the switch
documentation, the basic switch CLI commands needed to work with the controller are provided
in this document.
NOTE: Although not described in this document, it is also possible to perform switch configuration
via a telnet session with an Ethernet connection to the switch.
1.
2.
3.

4.

Using a null-modem (crossover) serial cable, connect a computer to the serial port of the switch
Management Module.
On the computer, configure a serial terminal program in VT100 mode, with Baud rate 9600,
8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, and no flow control.
Open a terminal session with the switch and press Enter several times until the welcome screen
appears. (A different screen may appear if another session was already open.)

Press any key to continue. The switch CLI prompt appears. It looks similar to this:
ProCurve Switch 5406zl#

5.

If instead, the switch menu is shown, return to the top-level menu and then exit to the CLI by
selecting Command Line (CLI) on the Main Menu.

The switch CLI prompt appears, similar to this.

Verify switch software version

Before configuring the controller, verify that the switch software version is compatible with the
controller which requires at least version K.13.51 on the switch.
At the switch CLI prompt, enter:
show version

The software version information is displayed like this:

Image stamp: ...
<date, time>
K.13.XX
...

If the switch software is out-of-date, update it according to the directions in your switch
documentation.

Activate the controller

The controller must be activated and booted before its own CLI can be used.

The controller uses the Service OS CLI on the controller for activation.

The controller ships with an HP MSM765 zl Software Activation License Registration Card in
the box. The License Registration ID is printed on this card.

Obtain the activation hardware ID

This procedure is performed starting at the switch CLI prompt that looks similar to this:
ProCurve Switch 5406zl#

NOTE:
green.

The controller Service OS CLI is available once the controller Module Status LED stays on

To obtain the activation hardware ID:

1. Change to the switch CLI configuration context:
config

2.

Launch the Service OS CLI:

services <slot-id> 1

Where <slot-id> identifies the slot containing the controller. Here is an example with an
controller in slot B:

3.

Obtain and record the MSM765 zl Activation Hardware ID:

licenses hardware-id activation

The Activation Hardware ID is displayed. Record this string precisely as displayed, including
the dashes.

Activate the controller

11

Register the controller license

Register the controller license as follows:
1. Go to www.hp.com/networking/mynetworking and sign in. New users must first create an
account.
2. Select the My Licenses tab at the top of the page.
3. In the Order number or Registration ID field, enter the License Registration ID either from the
registration card received with the controller or from a previous uninstall. Enter the ID exactly
as received, including the dashes. Select Next.
4. Enter the Hardware ID that you saved earlier and then select Next.
5. Review and accept the license agreement then select Next. The product license key is
generated.
6. A confirmation page appears, showing the License Key. From this page you can save or email
your license information. It is the License key portion that you need to complete the activation
of your controller.

Install the product license key

The starting point for this procedure is the Service OS CLI prompt for the controller you are activating.
If you do not have this prompt available, follow the directions in Obtain the activation hardware
ID (page 11).
1. Install the product license key:
licenses install activation <license key>

Where <license key> is the product license key just provided by the My Networking
portal. The key must be entered precisely as received including the dashes. For example:

2.

Boot the controller product:

The boot image is verified.

3.

At prompt:
System will be rebooted. Do you want to continue [y/n]?

Respond with "y".

The product reboots.
For example:

Configure the switch for the controller

The switch must be configured to work properly with the controller.

12

Initially connecting and configuring

This procedure assumes that there are Ethernet port modules installed in slot A, and that the controller
is installed in slot C. Sample VLAN IDs and names are used. You will need to adjust the procedure
according to slots chosen and VLAN IDs and names used.

About controller ports

The controller features two ports, Internet and LAN. These ports do not have RJ-45 Ethernet jacks.
Instead, these ports connect through the switch backplane and are mapped to specific RJ-45 jacks
on an Ethernet module by VLAN configuration in the switch. The switch references the Internet and
LAN ports according to the switch slot in which the controller is installed. For example, if the
controller is installed in slot C, the first port (C1) corresponds to the Internet port, and the second
port (C2) corresponds to the LAN port.

Define and assign VLANs

1.

At the switch CLI prompt, enter:

menu

2.

Press Enter. Select Switch Configuration.

3.

From the Switch Configuration menu, select VLAN Menu.

4.

Select VLAN Names.

Configure the switch for the controller

13

5.

Add two VLANs, one for the Internet port and another for the LAN port. For example, use
VLAN ID 10 with name MSM765_Int for the Internet port and VLAN ID 20 with name
MSM765_LAN for the LAN port:

6.
7.

Select Back to return to the VLAN Menu.

Select VLAN Port Assignment.

NOTE: In addition to DEFAULT_VLAN, columns are now present for the two VLAN names
(MSM765_Int and MSM765_LAN) you defined above. In our example, the controller Internet
port will be assigned to Ethernet port A1 and the controller LAN port will be assigned to
Ethernet port A2.
8.

9.

Select Edit and then use the arrow keys to move the highlight down to the DEFAULT_VLAN
column of port C1. Ports C1 and C2 respectively define the VLAN assignment for the controller
Internet and LAN ports.
Use the space bar to change values and the arrow keys to move between items. Moving from
left to right, set port C1 to No, Untagged, No. Set port C2 to No, No, Untagged. Ports C1
and C2 should now look like this:

10. Use the arrow keys to move the selection highlight to the DEFAULT_VLAN cell for port A1.

14

Initially connecting and configuring

11. Assign ONLY MSM765_Int to port A1, and ONLY MSM765_LAN to port A2. Use the space
bar to change values and the arrow keys to move between items. Moving from left to right,
set port A1 to No, Untagged, No. Set port A2 to No, No, Untagged. Ports A1 and A2 should
now look like this:

12. Consider reserving additional ports for connecting access points to the controller LAN port.
For example, you could set ports A3 and A4 to use the same VLAN as the LAN port, VLAN
MSM765_LAN in this example. You could then connect access points to ports A3 and A4 of
the Ethernet module.
13. Select Save when done, and then select Return to Main Menu.

Initial controller configuration

Determine switch index of the controller
The starting point for this procedure is the switch CLI prompt that looks like this:
ProCurve Switch 5406zl#

Initial controller configuration

15

Before you can launch the controller CLI you must first determine the switch-assigned index of the
controller. Each product type that is based on the Services zl Module (J9154A) like the controller
gets an index of at least 2 assigned to it by the switch at installation time.
For example, If two controller modules are installed in a switch with no other Services zl
Module-based products already installed, both controller blades will be assigned an index of 2
by the switch. Later, when a Services zl Module-based blade with a different product is installed
in the same switch, it will be assigned an index of 3. Installation sequence per product type
determines the index value.
1. To determine the index of your controller, enter the following at the switch CLI prompt (config
should be skipped if you are already in the switch CLI config context):
config
services

The Services zl Module products and their assigned indexes are listed like this:

In this example, there is only one type of Services zl Module installed, the controller. The
modules are installed in slots A, B, and C. All three controller modules have been assigned
an index of 2. Take note of the index value.
NOTE:
2.

Index 1 is reserved for the Service OS CLI for all Services zl Module-based products.

Exit the switch CLI config context by pressing Ctrl+z. The switch CLI prompt changes so that
it now looks like this:
ProCurve Switch 5406zl#

Assign an IP address via the CLI

The following procedures describe how to assign an IP address to either the WAN or LAN ports.
The starting point for both of these procedures is the switch CLI prompt that looks like this, for a
5406 zl switch:
ProCurve Switch 5406zl#

Assigning an IP address to the WAN port

In this example, the controller is on the 192.168.30.x subnet. We enable a static IP address on
the WAN Port of 192.168.30.141, allowing access to the controller from any computer with
access to the 192.168.30.x subnet.
To set the controller WAN port IP address:
1. Select the controller of interest, specifying the slot and index determined earlier.
services <slot-id> <index>

2.

Enable the chosen controller CLI and select its config context.
enable
config

3.

Select the controller WAN port interface.

(config)# interface ip wan

4.

Assign it an IP address of 192.168.30.141 and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.

(config-if-ip)# ip address 192.168.30.141/24

16

Initially connecting and configuring

5.

Set the IP address mode to static.

(config-if-ip)# ip address ip address mode static

Assigning an IP address to the LAN port

To set the controller LAN port IP address:
1. Select the controller of interest, specifying the slot and index determined earlier.
services <slot-id> <index>

2.

Enable the chosen controller CLI and select its config context.
enable
config

3.

Select the controller LAN port interface.

interface ip lan

4.

Assign it an IP address of 192.168.1.1 and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.

ip address 192.168.1.1/24

NOTE: For proper functioning of the MSM765 zl, the LAN port must not be left at its default
address of 0.0.0.0, even if it is not connected to your network. If you do not intend to connect
the LAN port, assign a dummy IP address to it (for example, 1.0.0.1).
The following sample screen shows the commands from the above procedure, using slot C
with an index of 2:

Using the Initial configuration workflow

The procedures in this section assume that you initially configured the LAN port using the CLI, as
described above.
NOTE:
1.

2.

Some prompts only appear when the controller is in its factory default state.

Configure your computer to use a static IP address in the range 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.254
and set the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0. Set the default gateway to 192.168.1.1 and DNS
server to 192.168.1.1.
Connect your computer to the Ethernet port (A2) you assigned to the controller LAN port.

Initial controller configuration

17

3.

Perform initial login tasks:

a. Using Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 or later, or Mozilla Firefox 17 or later, open page
https://192.168.1.1.
b. A security certificate warning might appear the first time you connect to the management
tool. This is expected. Select whatever option is needed in your web browser to continue
to the management tool.
c. On the Login page, enter admin for both Username and Password, and then select Login.
A workflow to set initial controller settings starts automatically.
CAUTION: To maintain regulatory compliance, during this workflow you must select
the correct country in which the controller and any controlled APs will operate. Selecting
an incorrect country can result in illegal operation and can cause harmful interference to
other systems.
d.
e.

After you accept the HP Licence, read the instructions and respond to the prompts on
each page, and select Next to continue to the next workflow page.
When the initial setup completes, select Go to Home Page or you can start one of these
other workflows:
CAUTION: When using teaming, you must not use the Create Guest VSC workflow.
Instead, you must manually configure guest access as described in the Guest access and
teaming section of the HP MSM Controllers Configuration Guide.

Create Employees VSC: This workflow helps you create a new wireless network to
provide wireless access for employees. It lets you define how employee traffic will
be distributed onto your wired infrastructure and configure wireless security settings
to safeguard network traffic.

Create Guest VSC: This workflow helps you create a new wireless network to provide
wireless access for guests. It lets you define how guests will be authenticated (using
a RADIUS server or the local user accounts feature on the controller) and how guests
will receive an IP address.

Restarting and resetting the controller

Restarting the controller
HP recommends that you use the management tool to restart an controller. In the management tool,
select Controller >> Maintenance > System > Restart.
Alternatively, the switch CLI can be used:
1. Enter the switch CLI configuration context:
config

2.

Initiate a controller restart:

services <slot-id> reload

Where <slot-id> identifies the switch slot containing the controller. A confirmation message
appears. Respond with "y" to continue.
The following sample screen shows the commands from the above two-step procedure for an
controller in slot A:

18

Initially connecting and configuring

Resetting a controller to factory defaults

Use the management tool to reset a controller to factory defaults as follows:
1. Select Controller >> Maintenance > Config file management.
2. Under Reset configuration, select Reset.
When you reset the controller to factory defaults, it loses its LAN port IP address and Internet port
configuration. After the controller reboots and the Status LED stays on, press Ctrl+z to return to the
switch CLI. Then follow the directions in Assign an IP address via the CLI (page 16) and Using
the Initial configuration workflow (page 17).

A Replacing hardware components

Replacing or removing a controller
HP highly recommends that the controller be shut down before removing or replacing it.
The Shutdown button on the controller front panel is not enabled. The CLI shutdown command is
not supported. Instead, you can effectively shut down a controller as follows:
1. In the management tool, save your work and wait until any pending configuration changes
are complete.
2. Log out of the management tool.
3. Remove the controller from the switch chassis.
It is possible to "hot-swap" one module for another, that is, replace one module with another while
the switch is still powered on, without interrupting the operation of the rest of the switch ports. If
the modules are not the same type, the switch may have to be reconfigured.
CAUTION: A five-second delay is mandatory between removing a controller and either re-installing
it, or replacing it with another.
To replace one controller with another or to remove a controller without replacing it, use the
following procedure:
1. Unscrew the retaining screws enough to disconnect them from the threaded holes in the switch.
2. Using the extractor handles pull the controller out from the slot.
3. Do one of the following:

If installing another module of the same type, go to Installation procedure (page 8)

and begin with step 2. A switch reset is not required. The current configuration in that
slot will apply to the new module.

If another controller will not be installed in the slot (that is, the slot will be left empty),
re-install the cover plate over the slot opening.

CAUTION: For proper cooling and reduction of electromagnetic emissions, ensure that a slot
cover is installed on any unused slot.

Replacing the disk drive

The following procedure describes replacing the disk drive in the controller. The controller may be
removed while the switch is powered on. See Figure 7 (page 22).
1. Using either a flat-bladed or Torx T-10 screwdriver, loosen the retaining screws securing the
controller (1 in figure below).
2. Using the extractor handles (2 in figure below), pull the controller out from the slot and turn it
over.
3. Using a Cross Recess Type 1 No.1 (Phillips tip) screwdriver remove the four retaining screws
holding the disk drive (3 in figure below).
4. Slide the disk drive part way back to disconnect it (4 in figure below).
5. Position the disk drive in the middle of the disk drive slot.
6. Using either side of the disk drive bracket, lift the disk drive out.
7. Install the new disk drive and slide it forward to engage the connector.
8. Re-install the four retaining screws.
9. Re-install the controller into the switch.
10. Use an equal amount of pressure and push both extractor handles closed to completely seat
the controller.
11. Tighten the retaining screws.

B Uninstalling a License
This Appendix describes how to uninstall the controller product activation license. This will be
necessary if you want to re-purpose a module or have experienced module failure and wish to
save the license for use elsewhere.
Both the switch CLI and the My Networking portal are used in this procedure.

Uninstalling a License
This procedure is started from the switch CLI prompt that looks like this:
ProCurve Switch 5406zl#

1.

Switch to the prompt for the controller module to be uninstalled:

Services <slot-id> 1

where <slot-id> identifies the slot containing the controller.

2.

Boot the module into its Service OS:

boot service

3.

At the "Do you want to continue..." prompt, select "y" for yes.
Here is an example with a controller in slot A:
ProCurve Switch 5406zl# services a 1
ProCurve Switch 5406zl(services-module-A:PR)# boot service
Changing boot from Product OS to Service OS.
System will be rebooted. Do you want to continue [y/n]?
Rebooting
ProCurve Switch 5406zl

4.
5.

Wait approximately two minutes for the boot process to complete.

Confirm that the module slot now appears in the Index=1 row, similar to this (in this example
look for slot A in the Index=1 row):
ProCurve Switch 5406zl# services
Installed Services
Slot
Index
Description
A,D,F
1.
Services zl Module
D,F 2. HP
ProCurve MSM765 zl Int-Ctlr
ProCurve Switch 5406zl#

6.

Name
services-module
msm765-application

Launch the Service OS CLI:

Services <slot-id> 1

where <slot-id> identifies the slot containing the controller.

Note how the prompt changes to indicate that you are now in the Service OS CLI. The two-letter
code after the slot ID in the prompt changes from PR to HD. The new prompt looks similar to
this:
ProCurve Switch 5406zl#(services-module-A:HD)#

7.

Enter the uninstall command:

license uninstall activation 0

and respond "y" to the confirmation prompt. The full sequence looks like this:
ProCurve Switch 5406zl# services a 1
ProCurve Switch 5406zl(services-module-A:HD)#
ProCurve Switch 5406zl(services-module-A:HD)# license uninstall activation 0
Are you sure you want to uninstall the license? (y/n) y
