B Karen Hannum runs her equestrian facili-
ty, Patriot Farms in Granite Bay, it seems
she must have been born on a horse.
Actually, Hannum’s extensive experience began
when she rode with her children as a family activity.
When her son Jonathan was 9, they went out on a
trail ride from a local stable.
“All of a sudden, Jonathan’s horse just turned
around and started running back to the barn as fast as
it could,” Hannum says.
She cantered after him, she said, crying in anxiety.
He’s going to be dead, she thought.
“I’ll never forget,” she said. “He was standing on the
hill, a silhouette, and the

der of an Army Stryker Brigade
Combat Team in Mozul, Iraq.
“I really do consider (Patriot
Farms) like a community serv-
ice,” Hannum says. “It’s really
rewarding for me to watch a
student who started here at 5

Eureka students find their natural talent

Mix science and eager Eure-
ka Union School District stu-
dents together and what do
you get?
Nature Bowl, a Sacramento
regional competition that com-
bines kids, critters, and creepy
crawlies — a perfect recipe for
fun.
Teams of third through sixth
grade students test their
knowledge of environmental
science with hands-on activi-
ties like analyzing soil samples,
flora and fauna-filled aquari-
ums, and question and answer
contests.
The conservation-minded
competition, sponsored by
California Department of Fish
and Game and various founda-
tions, incorporates state stan-
dards, and local ecological
issues, culminating in a final
event each May at Sacramento
State University.
Science is nothing new to
Eureka District employee and
coach, Diane Filice.
Filice, a curriculum resource
teacher for the district, wears
many hats. She is an English
learner coordinator, and a
homeless coordinator as well.
But she doesn’t let her many
job titles get in the way of her
passion — teaching environ-
mental science to her flock of
third and fourth graders.
Armed with a degree in
microbiology, as well as a
teaching credential, the former
Greenhills and Eureka School
teacher is thrilled to be a part of
the Nature Bowl competition.

says it all.
“We’ve never lost a semi
final,” Filice said, of the compe-
tition held at Placer Nature
Center each spring.
This year the team won the
semi-final, and first place in
the final competition — the
team brought home the first
place trophy last year as well.
Filice has coached a team for
12 of the 26 years that Nature
Bowl has been in existence.
When she started coaching in
1998, she relied on other teach-
ers to help out, but has been on
her own with the kids for the
last eight years.
And getting on the winning
team isn’t easy.
“Each year I have 25 to 40
kids who apply to be on the six-
or seven-member team,” Filice
said.
Alas, teams are comprised of
a maximum of seven students,
which leaves lots of disap-
pointed little faces when team
members are selected.
Ryan Hunter, an Excelsior
fourth grader, is a lucky student
who enjoys the science and
social opportunity the team
provides.
“I think the experience was
so much fun that every state
should have a Nature Bowl, not
just California,” he said.

plained that teams aren’t just
comprised of top students at
each school.
“You don’t need to be really
smart,” he said. “You could be
sort of a bad student in school,
but if you like nature and know
enough about it, you can make
it on the team.”
Hunter said when he saw a
Nature Bowl flier at school, he
showed it to his parents and
then checked out the website.
He was hooked.
“I was already sort of a
nature lover,” he said.

commitment. The team prac-

tices, studies, and watches
nature videos one day a week
after school, beginning in Jan-
uary, and more frequent when
preparing for tournaments.
Filice is simply glad kids can
join her in their love of local
ecosystems, and strengthen
their scholastic skills at the
same time.
“What I love about Nature
Bowl, is not only do kids build
their environmental back-
ground — but in the six events,
the questioning strategy, they
aren’t simply learning rote
answers,” Filice said. “Kids
have to use critical thinking
and puzzle solving — the skills
we aspire to. They have to syn-
thesize answers.”
Kids incorporate books,
using their school libraries for
research, as well.
Plus Filice loves winning.
“Typically charter schools
and IB schools in Sacramento
are our toughest competition,”
she said.
But, perhaps most satisfying
to Filice, is the fact that the
competition instills passion in
her young charges.
“I ran into a girl’s mom who
was on my very first team. Her
mom told me that Nature Bowl
was the reason she chose envi-
ronmental science as a field of
study, and later a profession,”
Filice said.

Shirley Pooley is an 81-
year-old writer, based in
Granite Bay, who recent-
ly authored “Bidding
One’s Goodbyes,” a book
about aging gracefully by
letting go of each cher-
ished moment, one-by-
one.
It might sound morbid,
but Pooley handles the
process of dying method-
ically, and with grace.
Pooley’s book is suitable
for those of us who are
getting older, which is, of
course, everybody.

Tell us about your book.
This is where I got my
“Bidding One’s Good-
byes”:
We have to go back,
with the help of God, and
let go — of those people,
adventures or things that
we can no longer do any-
more.
I (referred to) the writ-
ing of Elisabeth Kübler-
Ross (author of On Death
and Dying). I think of
those goodbyes as “little
deaths.”
We have to grieve
them. Kübler-Ross tells
us that we have to go
through denial, anger,
bargaining, depression
and then finally accept-
ance.
You have to let go of all
those things and be hap-
py where you are.
Is that hard to do?
Yes, it is! We have to
slow down.
So you’re donating your
book sales to Meals on
Wheels?
I read in the Auburn
Journal they’re cutting
back Meals on Wheels. I
forget, but I think two out
of nine people go hungry
at night.
That really hit me hard.
So any money I receive
from the book goes
toward the Meals on
Wheels program.
What made you write a
book?
This is the second
book. I’ve been a free-
lance writer since I
retired from my social
work and therapist jobs.
I’ve written many arti-
cles. I also wrote a book
on drug abuse (being) a
sickness of the soul.
It’s called “Can’t Stop
Overeating, Drinking,
Working, Shopping or
Using Prescription
Drugs.”
Sounds like my life sto-
ry!
(Laughs) I know … and
that book’s in the library,
too.
I’m also a breast can-
cer survivor and so I
wrote a story, which is in
a compilation with other
breast cancer survivors. I
just like to write. I love it.

be true, but there are, as with
everything these days, costs
involved. The good news is that
the banks have grown so com-
petitive that most lenders are
offering these loans without an
origination, set aside, or servic-
ing fee.
The elimination of these fees
gives you the borrower an
opportunity at more money.
You must still pay, however,
mortgage insurance and inter-
est on the money, but this cash
comes from your equity and
you are never asked to remit a
check for this expense. These
costs come from the proceeds
of the loan. You pay nothing
out of your pocket unless you
want to.
You should also know that
you cannot lose your home at
any time during the life of the
loan for failure to make pay-
ments. There are no payments
to make.
The loan does not come due
until you permanently leave
the home or the last borrower
dies. The home must be kept
up to reasonable standards, it
must be insured, and the prop-
erty taxes must be paid.

loan funds. Furthermore, the
MIP guarantees that you will
never owe more than the value
of your home when the reverse
mortgage must be repaid.
In summary, my goal with
this article is to shift your way
of thinking and understand
that this loan has been given a
bad rap. Yes, you can debate
the interest payment and the
possibilities of loss equity with
me, but I reply, “Have you ever
seen a hearse pulling a U-
Haul?”
I also believe that it is “best to
live life richly than to die rich.”

money after your passing, but
should that mean that you
should sacrifice the joy of your

Shaw said.
The spa provides more than
grooming for your pet needs. While
your pooch is being tended to, you
have the option of browsing
through the spa’s plethora of cloth-
ing, accessories, food and other
equipment.
“As far as retail we have clothing
from the Puppia Collection, Pinka-
holic New York. We have Earthbath
shampoo which is an all-natural
shampoo, we sell Hills Science pet
food and Royal Canin pet food and
we carry baseball jerseys, dog beds,
leashes, harnesses and other acces-
sories,” Shaw said.
The spa has been booked solid
with 7-10 pets per day since it
opened. With so many customers,
the exposure to different clientele
has been huge.
“Every day is memorable,” Shaw
said. “We just had our first great

Half Moon Bay has coastal splendor

jaunt to the coast at Half
Moon Bay, the oldest settle-
ment in San Mateo County.
I practically lived there for
two years while principal of
Farallone View Elementary
School in nearby Montara. I left
Saratoga at 5:30 a.m. and
returned home by 10 p.m. on
many a school day. My district
office was in Half Moon Bay, so
I became well acquainted with
the whole coastal area.
Once known as San Benito,
the town was renamed Span-
ishtown in the 1840s, it was
originally inhabited by
Costanoan Indians for hun-
dreds of years. Cabrillo High-
way (Highway 1) and Highway
92 follow their trails.
In 1874, it became known as
Half Moon Bay. This agricultur-
al town was incorporated in
1959 and is now the largest
town in San Mateo County. The
earthquake of 1906 destroyed
most of the adobes, and in
1987 I experienced another
earthquake there, which did a
lot of damage in town. I was
conferencing with a teacher
and parents as we rocked and
rolled throughout the event
under a table.
What to do
Half Moon Bay Art and Pump-
kin Festival: We participated in
the annual Half Moon Bay Art
and Pumpkin Festival. We joy-
fully ran in the Pumpkin Walk
on Historic Main Street in cos-
tumes while many entered
their pumpkins in the pump-
kin contest. Enjoy this wonder-
ful experience the weekend
after Columbus Day.
Marine life: Another thrill is
the James V. Fitzgerald Marine
Reserve learning about tide
pool wildlife. Also worthwhile
is exploring Half Moon Bay
State Beach and the El Granada
Beach in El Granada.
Boating and fishing: Pillar
Point Harbor is at the northern
edge of Half Moon Bay. Boating
