Chemistry 11
This final will teach you to do some research and use the material we have learnt
thus far. Things such as mole calculations and % yields.
Your task is to find an academic paper (only academic papers are allowed) for
some kind of compound, any compound. I recommend finding a compound of
something youd potentially actually like to make.
For example, perhaps you wish to start a cosmetic line. Cosmetics contain a
number of different compounds mixed in. Maybe you wish to find out how to
make something like glycerin or sodium dodecyl sulfate.
It will be shown in class how to find academic papers.
Once you have found your paper you need to answer the following questions:
Linalool (H18C10O)
1. What is the purpose of your compound? How is it useful? : widely used in
perfumery
2. What is the starting material to make your product? :1-Chloro-4-methyl3-pentane (H11C6Cl)
3. What is the % yield given in the paper?: 57.30%
4g
Mol = 118.538 g
1 mol of linalool
1 mol of strating material
so mol of
linalool = 0.034mol
= Theoretical product
x
154 g
so
= 0.034154 = 5.236g
Actual

Theoretical
3g

5.236 g
= 57.30%
4. How many grams of product were made?: 3g
5. How many moles of product were made?: 0.034mol
1 mol of linalool
1 mol of strating material
so mol of
linalool = 0.034mol
6. How many grams of product would be produced if they obtained a 95%
yield?:4.974 g
Percent yield =
Actual
100
Theoretical
95% =
x
100
5.236 g
= 4.974g
7. If they started with 5 grams of starting material, how much product could
they have theoretically made?:6.48g
5.00 g
118.538 g
1 mol of linalool
1 mol of strating material
= Theoretical of linalool
0.0421 mol =

154 g
1 mol of linalool
Percent yield =

57.30% =
10.0 g

57.30
= 13.4g
You must attach your answers and the academic paper when handing in.
