Learning Central Focus
Lesson Plan Title: Reading Maps
Grade Level: 3rd
Central Focus:

What is the central focus for the content in the learning segment? Students will identify
places maps can be found. Students will be able to recognize key vocabulary, symbols,
and words used on maps. Students will be able to identify parts of a map. Students will
be able to tell what maps are used for.

What standard(s) are most relevant to the learning goals? CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.3.7


Use information gained from illustrations (e.g., maps, photographs) and the words in a
text to demonstrate understanding of the text (e.g., where, when, why, and how).

Student Learning Goal(s)/ Objective(s): Students will explain where different types of maps
are found in the community. Students will also be able to recognize the different vocabulary
components of a map and where they are located. Students will be able to identify the different
types of maps. Students will be able to recognize the differences of the symbols used in the key
section of the map. Students will complete an assessment pertaining to the lesson with at least
70% accuracy.

Instructional Strategies and Learning Tasks


Launch: __7________ Minutes

How will you gain attention? I would gain attention by asking the class, What can you
tell me about maps from what you have learned within the past few days? I would wait
to give them a chance to respond by raising their hands. This question will gain their
attention and get their minds flowing.

How will you start the lesson to engage and motivate students in learning? I will start the
lesson by giving the students a review of the previous lessons.

What are your rules for the lesson? Students are expected to raise their hands to
answer questions and not just blurt out answers all at the same time. Students are
expected to face forward and pay close attention to the teacher during instruction.
Students are expected to complete all class assignments with at least 70% accuracy in
order to maintain a passing grade.

Instruction: __15________ Minutes

I would begin the lesson by reviewing for the test. I would ask them questions, drilling
them, to see if they have mastered the important topics of maps. I would ask questions
like, What is a map? What are maps used for? When looking at a map, what
indications let you know that it is a map? What are the four different types of maps that
were learned? What are the five different components of a map? I would also ask them
situational questions such as, If I want to know the natural resource of a specific region,
which map would be best to use? Or, What indications let you know the primary
weather of the region of Texas on a climate map? What are the symbols used?

How will you end the lesson? I will end instruction by asking if anyone has any problems
or are unfamiliar with any portion of what we have learned within the past few days?
Assuming that no one has any problems, I would then begin the test. But, if there are
students who may not have a total understanding of any portion of the previous lesson, I
would explain to them what they have misunderstood.
