Theabovesummationsmustincludeallforcesappliedtotheparticle.Forequilibriumofasystemofparticles,
theaboveequilibriumequationsarewrittenforeachparticle,andthentheresultingsystemofsimultaneous
equationsissolved.
Freebodydiagram.Thefreebodydiagram(FBD)isanessentialaidforhelpingensurethatallforcesapplied
toaparticleareaccountedforwhenyouwriteequationsofequilibrium.WhenyoudrawanFBD,itishelpfulto
imagineenclosingtheparticlebyaclosedlineintwodimensions,oraclosedsurfaceinthreedimensions.
Whereverthecutpassesthroughastructuralmember,theforcessupportedbythatmembermustbeintroduced
intheFBD.Whereverthecutpassesthroughasupport,thereactionforcesthatthesupportappliestotheparticle
mustbeintroducedintheFBD.
Cables,bars,pulleys,andsprings
Cablesandbars.Cablesandstraightbarsarestructuralmembersthatsupportforcesthatarecollinearwiththeir
axis.Weassumecablesmaysupporttensileforcesonlyandmaybefreelybent,suchaswhenwrappedarounda
pulley.Weusuallyassumecableshavenegligibleweight.Barsmaysupportbothtensileandcompressiveforces.
Pulleys.Apulleyisadevicethatchangesthedirectionofacable,andhence,changesthedirectionoftheforce
thatissupportedbythecable.Ifthepulleyisfrictionlessandthecableisweightless,thenthemagnitudeofthe
forcethroughoutthecableisuniform.
