Abbur is holy place situated on the banks of river Kanwa. It also has the Mula-Brindavan of Sri
Brahmanya and other Saints of Vaishnava seers. The Place is located amid coconut groves and
green fields.
Sri Brahmanya Thirtha went on a pilgrimage visiting holy shrines in north and south. On the
way back to Abbur he entered a cave and did penance for a long time. During his Life time he
did many miracles. He installed Sri Vysaraja in his place as the head of mutt. And entered
Brindavana on Vishaka Bahula Dwadashi. Some of the idols worshipped in the mutt are
Lakshminarsimha, Venugopala, Bhoo-Vvaraha, Ramachandra, Sita, Lakshmana, Madhwacharya-
Karachita, Yogapattika Sri Lakshminarasimha, Lakshmidevi and Satyabhama Devi.
The mutt is existing even today as Kundapura Mutt. The Varadaraja temple is near the Mutt. It is
believed that Vyasatirtha, is the disciple of Brahmanya Thirtha, spent his student days at Abbur
near Channapatna. This Matha is built in Vijayanagara style. The stone pillars are sculpted with
relief structures. Lord Srinivasa statue was installed in the Garbagriha by Vyasathirtha. There are
two entrances to the hall, one from north and another from east. This entrance leads to a hall
where we can see the Purandara Mantap. It is believed that Purandara Dasa visited during
Vysathirthas time and sang many bhajans and keerthanas in front of the Lord. Purandara
Aradhane, festival dedicated to the Saint Purandara Dasa is organized here every year. This
place beholds rich heritage and historical monuments that are still to be explored and analyze.
Further to, the heritage has been ruined by the invasion of Muslim reign during Nawab Hyder
Ali.

Sri Vyasarayaru was Brahmanya teerthas disciple. In Madhwa lineage, there are 3 major
mutts direct following of madhwacharyas peetha. After the first 5 prominent swamijis,
there are around 25-30 and then comes Sri Rajendra teertharu, whose guru was Sri
Vidyadhiraja. He gave deeksha to two people, so the lineage was broken up.
Purvadhimutt is the first split given to Rajendra teertharu. Uttaradimutt started from the
second person. In the purvadhimutt, vyasarayaru was the prominent saint. His works are
Nyamaruta and
Tarkatandava
Purvadhimutt started being called as Vyasarayara mutt. After Sri Vyasarayaru, 5-6
swamijis came, and there was a split. Sri Brahamanyateertharu had his own lineage and
Brahmanyateertha mutt was called as Abbur mutt which is also being called as Kundapur
Vyasaraya mutta and the other one is the Sosale Vyasaraya mutt. Sri Sripadarajaru was
the vidya guru of Sri Vyasa rayaru. But Sri Vyasarayas deekshe was given by Sri
Brahmanya teertharu.
Note : Gents in shalye-panche and ladies in Saree are allowed to do pradakshina and to
have teertha-prasada. Other attire are NOT allowed.
Puroshottama Guha : Just 3 Km from Abbur the road is too narrow and bumpy, full of
ditches and mud. But the nature outside was too good. You can walk to this place from
the Abbur Matha. It is believed that Sri Purushottama teertharu used to go to this guha
daily to do Japatapaanusthana and from there and carry the water to offer pooja to
Kambhada Narashima devara devasthaana in a near by village. Later Sri Purushottama
teertharu went into this guha to do his penance and he never came back. It is believed
that he still resides there. People used to still go deep into the cave, but then the
hanumantha idol was installed there to prevent them from going deeper into it.
Hot to go : Abbur is around 70 kms from Bangalore on the mysore highway. If you take a
bus going to Mysore from Bangalore, get down at Chanapatna and from there take an auto
to Abbur. It is around 6Km from Chanapatna on the way to Kanva rese rvoir. Also there
might be some local transportation from Chanapatna to Abbur, please check wth the
locals.

In these days where one sees the effects of Kali age predominant even in sacred precincts
and selfishness and smallness of mind seem to rule the times, it may be difficult to think
of a time when giants like Sri Brahmanya Tirtha ruled the kingdom of God. This great
personality believed to be an incarnation of Surya shone with brilliance in the fifteenth
century and left posterity with the invaluable gift of Sri Vyasaraja - philosopher,
administrator, sage and scholar - who has been unequaled in the Vedanta realms. Sri
Brahmanya Tirtha's Punyadina falls on Vaishakha Bahula Yekadashi. He entered his final
abode Vrindavana in 1461 AD in Abbur, near Channapattana on the Bangalore - Mysore
highway.
Not much has bee recorded of his life history. Some facts are available from his "Vijaya"
composed by Sri Srinivasa Tirtha , who is a descendant of the order. His father was
Ramacharya with the nickname of Poogavana (areca farm). Possibly he owned one. Sri
Brahmanya was born in Nrihari kshethra on the banks of the Cauvery and was named
Narasimha. The boy was sent to Sri Purushotthama Tirtha at the young age of 7 after his
Upanayana samskara. Sri Purushotthama was next in line to Sri Jayadhwaja whose name is
preserved for posterity for his founding of the Dvaita school in the north, specially in
Navadvipa (modern Bengal). ISKON followers call his name as Jayadharma.
Narasimha was a precocious pupil with great intelligence, devotion to God and disinterest
in the affairs of the world. Sri Purushotthama had already received some indications in
dreams about his pupil. The education of Narasimha was completed in a short while and
he was also given the oaths of Asceticism and called Brahmanya Tirtha by his Guru. Very
soon the latter entered a cave near Abbur and disappeared from human view. A miracle
attributed to Sri Brahmanya tirtha was that when he sprinkled some consecrated water on
cold cooked food after Puja, it became fresh and hot.
There was a rich and pious Brahmin who had started on a pilgrimage to Banaras. His
location is not clearly specified, but it is said that he also lived on the shore of Cauvery
river (Called Marudvrudha in the Rgveda). Unfortunately, he died suddenly after getting
fever. His wife who wanted to commit Sathi along with her husband (they were childless
at the time) came to beg permission of Sri Brahmanya Tirtha, the worshipper of Nrusimha
deity given to him by his Guru. Sri Brahmanya blessed the widow - "Dheergha sumangalee
bhava" - Be happy as a wife in wedded bliss for a long time. When she told him that she
was no longer having a husband, Sri Brahmanya Tirtha told her - do not worry. Your
husband is not dead, but is still alive. He gave her holy water with incantations, which
when applied to the dead body of the husband brought him back to life, as if nothing had
happened. As per the Swamiji's desire, the first born of this couple was given even as a
young baby, to him. This baby was received on a golden plate and fed with the milk used
for Abhisheka of the Lord. The baby who grew up into the great Vyasaraja, was given his
Upanayana Samskara at the age of 5 and took the oath of asceticism at the age of 7.
Though Sri Brahmanya himself was greatly learned as described by his own disciple and
successor Sri Vyasaraja, he was sent for his studies to Sri Sripadaraja at Mulbagal. He
became famous for his erudition, scholarship, great qualities of complete disinterest in
personal factors and became the fountain head of learning for Tatvavada in his time.
In the mean while Sri Brahmanya Tirtha received the idol of Vittala as a result of a dream
indication, from where it was buried in the ground. He went to Karnataka capital
(possibly Srirangapattana) and on being requested by the king and people of the state,
which was suffering from drought, brought back copious rains. The grateful kingdom gave
the ascetic a village called Brahmanyapuri. After handing over his reign to the worthy
successor, he entered in to Samadhi in Abbur.
When the Abbur Matha was being renovated and improved for the facility of devotees in
the last few years, it appears that there was an idea to cover his Vrindavana also along
with the rest of the area. However, Sri Brahmanya Tirtha directed the reigning pontiff to
leave it uncovered as at present - possibly because he is believed to be the incarnation of
the Sun. Even in the prayer shloka given below seems to hint at this fact. Even today, a
large number of devotees visit his Vrindavana and attain their desires by prayers and Seva
at his feet.
His great disciple Sri Vyasaraja has composed the following shlokas about his Guru.
May Sri Brahmanya tirtha the great ascetic who is always immersed in the lotus feet of
the destroyer of the evil Kamsa (Krishna) always remain in my mind.
Worship and serve the great Brahmanya tirtha who is like the Sun which destroys darkness
(of the mind) and shows the way (to Moksha) and who is always interested in the Lotus
feet of Vishnu. (in the case of the Sun analogy, Vishnu pada means the sky.).
Childless couples come here to pray to AmbegAlu Krishna and come back to offer cradles
after the child is born.
He also wanted to thank Sri Purandara Dasaru for all his contributions to Samaja and
Madhwa siddhanta, he knew Dasaru would not take any kind of gift or reward, so he made
a Mantap, in the name of Sri Purandara Dasaru and gave orders for this daily pooje there
along with Srinivasa. The Puranadara Mantap is adjacent to temple, with the entrance
from within the temple.
Hot to go : MaLur is around 62KM from Bangalore on the Bangalore Mysore highway. You
can get down at Chanapatana and then take an auto or a village bus which stops at
mallur. It is just about 2 Kms from Chanapatna.
_____________________________________________________________________________
It is about 5 km from the Chanapatana main road. Its a very small village. A big banyan
tree, and just next to it is the old Pranadevaru temple. Sri Bhramanaya Teertharu, Sri
Vyasarayaru mathe Sri Sripadarajaru moovaru seri prathistapisida moorthy idu. The idol
of Pranadevaru represents the three avatara of Hunumantha namely Hanuma, Bhima and
Madhwa. The Shika of the pranadevaru represents the Madhwa avatara. The
Saugandhika pushpa in hand represents the Bhimavathara. Its a very beautiful murthi.
Sri Purushottama teertharu used to go to the guhe and do his morning rituals there.
From there he used to go to Kamba narasimha, to do pooje in Kamba Narasimha, he had
to take water from purushottama guha. The lineage continued and Brahmanyateertharu
also followed the same ritual. But one day, Sri Brahmanayteertharu felt that it was a
long distance from Guhe to kamba narasimha temple. The water would become mailige
by the crowd on the long distance. So he found a new village from where he could get
easy access to water and thus the village came to be known as BrahmanyaPura. While
clearning the place, he found a beautiful idol of hanuman, and he called his disciple Sri
Vyasaraya teertharu and his close friend Sri Sripada teertharu (cousin of brahmanaya
teertha) so all three of them jointly installed that idol in the temple.
_____________________________________________________________________________
There is a Shri Vyasarayara Prathiste Pranadevaru at Kengal. This Praana devaru was the
third among the 108 Praana devaru instated by Shri Vyasarayaru. The idol is made out of
red stone and hence the name kengal (Kempu kallu) hanumantha which literally means
red stone in Kannada. The idol was initially facing south, at the time of prathishthapane,
and only one cheek and one eye were visible to the devotees. It was not possible to put
nAma. The face has gradually turned facing east during the course of time. Thus it is now
possible to see frontal view of the face also to put a nAma. Also There is a small red rock
at the adjacent to the temple where SubramaNya (snake form) is said to be forming.
Hot to go : Kengal is around 50KM from Bangalore on the Bangalore Mysore highway

Hi Vijay,
Thanks for writing wonderfully about the places on mysore road, but there is a small
correction required to reach the place called Brahmanyapura. You have mentioned that
(there is a lake to the left) you have to take a right turn and go 6kms in the same road.
Actually to go to brahmanyapura from bangalore direction on mysore road, you have to
take a left just after the lake, the lake is called Kunneeera katte and after travelling
around 3 to 4 kms on the road, you get a temple on the road called Vadda
Hanumantharayana gudi after this temple, you have to take a right turn to reach
brahmanyapura Praanadevara temple. Why I am telling you all this is because, I am
born into the family who are maintaining this temple and it belongs to our family. You can
also try and cover the Kambada Narasimha article on top of a hill. To reach Kambada
narasimha from mysore road, take left as told above and from Vadda
Hanumantharayana gudi, go straight to reach that hill to the left of the road. To reach
brahmanyapura, u take right from Vaddahanumantharayana gudi. OK. Please let me
know if you need further details my email ID is sreesha.br@gmail.com
Providing information is a great job and I am really benefited by reading this web site.
Thank you very much and I will make use of this information.

Many Thanks for this informative post. Yesterday my family members and I visited Abbur
Matha, Malur Krishna temple and the Srinivasa temple in Channapatna. We went to
Brahmanyapura but both the temple and the Archak's house was locked so we couldn't
2. The picture with the title Abboor.jpg, is actually of the avatara mukhya prANa at
Brahmanya Pura (Brahmani Pura)
consecrated by the yati thrayaru - Sri Brahmanya Theertharu, Sri Sri Padarajaru and Sri
Vyasarajaru.
Brahmanya Pura is a small village with less than 100 houses, which is around 4 kms from
Channapatna.
Location: Just before you reach Channa patna from BLR, you get a big lake (dried out) on
your left hand side with railings on both sides. Just after the lake, take a left turn. Drive
for 3 kms and you get a temple with the garuda kambha at the center of the road.
The temple with the idol shown is at the entrance of the village infront of a huge banyan
tree. There is only one MAdhwa house, belonging to descendants of Abbur Mutt, and he
takes care of the pooje at fixed timings.
Incase you want to visit the temple, make sure you inform him first hand.
If you go back 1 km and stand at the garuda kambha at the middle of the road, you can see
a hillock which actually has the
Kambhada Narasimha. The story is that Sri Brahmanya Theertharu used to go from Abbur to
this place every day
to worship and he had a small pond dug out at brahmanya pura to help him out for ahnika.
Once upon a time the whole place was filled with Madhwas and shishyas of Sri Brahmanya
theertharu.
