Traffic Management at Koteshwor Area
INTRODUCTION:-
Kathmandu is the capital city of Nepal and largest city which have high traffic density
now days. Traffic jam is very common but serious problem. Due to the lack of proper
planning and designing of highways, it is very much difficult to manage the traffic for the
efficient movement. In most of the time city seems to be crowded by the traffic jam. It is
because of the narrow road and unsymmetrical road pattern. In present context of
Kathmandu city, traffic light and signals are totally functionless so that entire
responsibility of traffic management is given to the traffic police. Rate of accident is
increasing day to day due to various reason related to drivers, vehicles and concerned
authority.
Koteshwor is the one of the central area of Kathmandu and which have high traffic
density due to this there is also lots of traffic problems like traffic jam, praking problems,
and large no. of accidents occurs due to high traffic density lack of proper managements
of vehicles and all road users and due to not proper designing of road and control devices
and its systematic use. The places in Kathmandu that witness accidents frequently
include Teenkune, Koteshwor, Harihar Bhawan, Putali Sadak, Ring road and many other
intersections, while nocturnal mishaps are more frequent on the Ring Road, Kantipath
and Naya Baneshwor because of over speeding. So proper use of traffic rules, traffic sign,
signal are main factors that affects on traffic management at koteshwor.
BACKGROUND:-
Along with the rise in population, the Kathmandu valley has been considerable growth in
no of public and private vehicles. The government of Nepal is planning to put in place
intelligent traffic system, which would provide the real time visualization of traffic jam
and road condition via wireless traffic data and CCTV live video in 35 traffic junction of
Kathmandu valley. The ITS, which is the self adaptive system, would be able to respond
quickly to changes in road condition, modify signal policies and reroute drivers to
prevent congestion. If all goes as planned, all busy road intersection in the valley will be
equipped with traffic light for the effective traffic movement. According to the MOPIT,
the government will also complete the construction of 7km heritage walk route and 15
km trekking route in the Kathmandu metropolitan city within a year. Bus rapid transit
will brought in to operation along the 16km stretch of Bishnumati link road-lainchaur-
Dhobighat Bagmati corridor within 5 years. The government also planned to classify
around 200 public transportation routes across the valley in 3 levels and prescribe the
standard of vehicles. The government of Nepal has also vowed to end syndicate system in
transportation sector. The government has also decided to expand 81 km of 157 km road
of Kathmandu valley within the 5 years. The ring road (27 km) and suryabinayak to
Dhulikhel (17 km) stretch will be upgraded in to 4 lanes within 2 and 5 years
respectively.
The major problem of traffic management in Kathmandu valley is the lack of parking
zone. Till now, 73 parking lots have been identified by the Kathmandu metropolitan city.
Vehicles have been parked randomly so that the movement of traffic along the road is
directly affected. Construction of parking zone having high vehicle parking capacity is
the present need. Using of flyover at the busiest intersection of valley is the better way of
reducing crowd at such intersection. Lack of awareness to the pedestrian becomes major
challenge for using over head bridge. They search short way of crossing rather than safe
way, which ultimately become the cause of death. Many flyover are in the phases of
construction at the different location of valley. In koteshwor mainly because of the
narrow roads and unsystematic road there happens traffic jam. It is said traffic police are
kept to manage the vehicles in the road. Police should obey the order given by the high
rank police. But the civil people dont know that either the high ranked police does not
gives order or the police does not obey the order.
The unsystematic street shops have also played vital role in traffic jam. No systematic
rules are found. Vehicles are driven anywhere they like. There are narrow roads. One way
roads are found in negligible number. For the improvement of this disgusting thing
government and people should be aware. So, to maintain these problems it seems so
challenging. Problems cannot be solved without a great effort of government and people
as well. Many tourist areas are situated but they are not managed well. They should be
managed well. These problems seem to be the current most challenging issues.
OBJECTIVES OF STUDY:-
Road traffic systems are one of the most complex and dangerous systems with which
people have to deal every days. The main objective of this research is to know the causes
of road crash, crash sport, crash period, reason of crash, alternative ways of controlling
this crash, parking management and also maximum use of road network with minimum
road jam, efficient traffic flow of koteshwor.
METHODOLOGY:-
The region defend to the traffic is under their supervision and control. Similarly
Koteshwor traffic station controls Jadibuti, minbhawan, tinkune area.
From above data it is seems that maximum road crash in Baishak month. Data also shows that
maximum no of bike are involved in accident. And from death record more male are died than
female. It seems that there is very few no of children are involved in aacidents. Also in injured
record section theres again male nos. are more. From over all data It replicate that large no. of
male are involved in accident. And cause of accident mainly due to drivers fault which indicates
that either proper training or awareness is needed to provide and also accordingly fine should
charged And also if involved in major crash their license should be canceled accordingly. If
involved in regular miner crash then they should be fined and attain awareness class provided by
Traffic. . And others causes are like due to improper geometric design and careless of road users ,
improper sign, signal etc . In koteshwor area proper traffic indications like lane marking, safety
barrier, pedestrian refugee, zebra crossing, delineating post, actuated and coordinating signals,
yield sign, cat eye should be provide at the road. Proper management of traffic volume can be
done by Metros, BRTs so the concept of Lesser the Vehicle Lesser the Accident must be followed
strictly which results in decreasing accident in koteshwor area. And for traffic jam ,flyover
bridge is necessary at the tinkune intersection area.
