A note from Dr. Suryansu Ray, suryansuray@yahoo.com

The chandaH used here is not AryAgIti. In fact it is not in a mAtrA chandaH;
it is in a vRRitta chandaH. In a vRRitta chandaH the sequence of laghu and guru
syllables is uniform in all the four feet of a verse. In such a case if one
counts the mAtrAs, one finds that all the feet have the same number of mAtrAs,

2
and one wrongly identifies it as a mAtrA chandaH. Consequently, there is a
danger that all vRRitta chandaHs are identified a mAtrA chandaHs. The procedure
to identify a metre is that one first observes if there is a uniform pattern of
laghu-guru syllables in all the four feet of a verse. If no uniform pattern is
visible, one still looks for a pattern for an ardhasamavRRitt. Even after this
one looks for an irregular viShamavRRitta. Only after this one tests the verse
for a mAtrA chandaH. In the shivatANDavastotram here, each foot contains 16
syllables (akSharas) according to the following laghu-guru (L-G) scheme:
LGL GLG LGL GLG LGL G = 16 syllables.
Interestingly, each of these feet of 16 syllables can further be divided into
two parts, each with 8 syllables, which are exactly identical. We break into two
the above scheme as follows:
LGL GLG LG + LGL GLG LG
This well-known metre is know as pa ncacAmara , as described in chandoma njarI by GangAdAsa.

The last shloka is not in aAyA gFEt. It has been broken at the pause for
each half verse.
