Study of nature and plant life
I looked at plant life and then
studied characters/creatures made
from trees such as Groot
(Guardians of the Galaxy), Sylvanus
(Smite) and Ents (Lord of the
Rings). After looking at art and
concept art for these characters I
did many drawings, etchings and
experiments (which can be found
in my sketchbook). This is a digital
painting I did using Groot as the
main inspiration, the background
was a photo I took and edited
using the cutout filter in
Photoshop.

An etching print I did of Groot from guardians of the

galaxy which I then coloured in in watercolour pencil
A Look
at foliage

This is a digital painting I created of a tree using multiple

different brushes and techniques on drawing foliage. It was
originally a lot of experiments with things such as plants, grass
and branches and then I developed it into a more finished
looking piece.

I did a study of traditional Japanese art such as paintings on woodblock, prints and their fascination with
Samurai and landscapes. These are just a few examples I created; more can be found in the smaller
sketchbook.

Learning Digital Character Art
I wanted to study how concept artists did their characters in Photoshop so I could apply it to my
concept art for my character ideas on my Games Development course. But rather than go straight
out with my own character I decided to do art of the Overwatch character Genji, I thought it would
be easier to learn the methods if I didnt have to worry about coming up with the character idea as
well. This way I could just focus on the methods and experiment on this before learning what
worked and what didnt, then applying it to my own character ideas

I started off with the line art and looking

at getting base shapes and body size
down before zooming in and doing the
line detail.
I then looked at the Ambient Occlusion pass and where light and dark would be by
looking at the shapes and parts of the character, not taking into account the main light
source and light from that yet. I started adding base colours, making sure they are dark I then started adding the highlights and then moving on to experimenting with light. I also added glows to the
and not too stand out so I can work on top of them easily. I added a background and a green parts of the character as they would be green lights. I finished all the highlights and experimenting with the
shadow (which was too big and would need to be changed later on). strength of the lighting. I then modified the leg and left it here as I didnt want to spend too much time developing
art of a character that already existed. I wanted to get going on my own.
Taking my experimentation further

Water Experimentation using different brushes and

techniques to create a full scene that
fits my pirate theme.

I started to experiment with different

brushes and textures to create a water
effect as a lot of my game idea is set
in the ocean.
Graphic Design
In a Graphics unit we looked at creating
products like Juice boxes, I took inspiration
from the character Little Mac from the Punch
Out series as we had to look at goals/mascots
for gym goers as it is a protein drink. I did a
basic digital drawing of him using primarily
the smudge tool and a normal brush, and
then experimented with two other filters to
see what I preferred. I added more lines to
the original painting to give it a more bold
look then placed it on the carton template we
were given. And added my own text and
patterns to the cartoon..

While studying Graphic Design I did a

multitude of experiments using different
techniques and mediums, this was a pen
experiment of line on music paper.

This rose was one of my

experiments I made when
looking into creating
greetings cards. It was
originally a watercolour
pencil piece that I then put
into Photoshop to create a
grottier and less vibrant feel.
Combining
Techniques
A large painting I did set in a swamp. It
was on art paper. I laid down a wash of
blue paint and then put some tissue
paper on top (can be seen to the right
and in the water underneath the mech). I
used ink on top of the tissue paper to
create a range of colours. I then used
acrylic paints for the rest (such as the
tree) and then went over them for details
in watercolour pencil.

The perspective is off but this was more

experimentation mixing things together
in a scene, at a later a date a more
detailed piece with correct perspective
may be attempted.

Life Drawing
I have taken different life courses over my time at college and these are some of my works, using
multiple mediums. These 3 in particular are ones done over a shorter time frame.

These were all quick 5 minute sketches of poses done in chalk.
