Gund Khwaja Qasim, Mirgund,
Hanjiveera, Balhama, Panear, Tral, Di-
vsar Kulgam, Sofipora Pahalgam,
Chattergul, Achabal, Dangerpora,
Sonawari and scores of other places.
In central Kashmirs Budgam dis-
trict Ashura processions was taken
out from Jamia Babul Alim to Imam-
bara Yousufabad, Magam, Iskinder-
pora Beerwah and Sonpah. The big-
gest procession was taken out from
Mirgund to Imambargah Budgam.
The procession was led by senior sep-
aratist leader and president Anjuman
Shari Shain Aga Syed Hasan Almosvi
Alsafvi. Witnesses added that mourn-
ers forcibly entered into the house of
Aga Syed Hasan and forced police to
retreat from the spot. Pertinently,
Aga Syed Hasan has been under
house arrest from past three months.
Aga Syed Hasan said that Imam Hus-
sain (AS) symbolizes firm faith in Al-
mighty, high principals of righteous-
ness, purity of thought and highest
degree of sacrifice to uphold truth
and human dignity. He said that
Imam Hussain (AS) and his compan-
ions exhibited unparalleled courage
and patience, and made historic sac-
rifices at Karbala which would en-
lighten and guide the mankind forev-
er. Taking a dig at the government for
not allowing the Ashura procession
from Abi Guzar, he said that he won-
ders why government cites the rea-
son of security for not allowing the
Ashura procession.
Ashura processions were also tak-
en out in Ladakhs remote Turtuk,
Partappora and Chushut. In Kargil,
Ashura was observed under the ban-
ner of Anjuman-e-Jamiyat Ullama (Is-
lamia School Kargil). The mourning
processions were taken out from dif-
ferent villages of Kargil. The proces-
sions passed through Main Bazar, Lal
Chowk, Khomeni Chowk, Islamia
School Chowk and concluded at Qa-
tilgaha-e-Hussaini (Inqillab Man-
zil). Thousands of mourners partici-
pated in these processions. In Gan-
derbal district, Ashura processions
were taken out at Bot Kullan and
Dub.
Thousands of mourners were part
of an Ashura procession taken out
from Peer Mitha Jammu amid tight
security arrangements. The proces-
sion commenced from Imam Bargah
Peermitha under the banner of Anju-
man-e-lmamia, Jammu. Thousands
of mourners from across the region
mourned the martyrdom of Imam
Hussain (AS). A brief Majlis (congre-
gation) was also held before the start
of the procession where scholars de-
livered lectures narrating the tragedy
of Karbala.
After passing through the tradi-
tional route, the procession culminat-
ed at Karbala complex Wazarat road.
Similar procession was also taken
out from New Plots Jammu by Anju-
man-e-Haidery that culminated and
merged with the main procession at
Imam Bargah Sofi Shah Peermitha.

suspected militants reportedly
took refuge inside the hostel building
of the EDI.
We have recovered two bodies,
a police official said. Two weapons
have also been recovered from their
possession, he added.
It is second such gun battle inside
the premises of the EDI in last eight
months.
The sprawling seven-storey-sev-
enty-room hostel building of the EDI
has been completely destroyed after
forces used mortar shells, rockets and
grenades to evacuate the suspected
militants.
A police handout said that the en-
counter had started on October 10
and on the first day itself the mili-
tants were asked to surrender. In-
stead they fired upon police and se-
curity forces from the building. The
militants also set some rooms of the
building on fire. An army jawan was
injured in the encounter on the first
day.
The police and security forces
kept continued cordon around the
building and also started room inter-
vention. During this encounter two
militants were killed. The bodies of
the militants has been recovered
from the encounter site, today. The
identity of the slain militants is being
ascertained. Two AK rifles, 09 Maga-
zines, grenades and other ammuni-
tion has been recovered from the en-
counter site.

Thousands of people have been
arrested by people across Kashmir
since from past 95 days while more
than hundred people have been
booked under draconian Public Safe-
ty Act and shifted to outside Kashmir
jails. However, there are hundreds of
youth languishing in different police
stations while outside those stations
relatives mostly the mothers and sis-
ters of the incarcerated youth are
seen on daily basis to get them re-
leased.
My two sons Reyaz and Ishtiyaq
have been lodged in this police sta-
tion. Even my husband is also in the
lock-up. I am eagerly waiting here
with a hope to have interaction with
them, said a woman to news agency
CNS who was waiting outside Raj
Bagh Police Station.
A lady from Rambagh area was
seen waiting outside Saddar Police
Station. She said that her son Bilal
Ahmed was picked up by police a few
days back. He was part of a peaceful
protest but he didnt throw the
stones. He is my lone son and I am
waiting for his release, she said.
The scene outside different police
stations across Kashmir is similar.
Mostly elderly persons including
women are being seen with a hope to
meet their arrested kids. My grand-
son Farooq Ahmed was picked up by
CRPF during a protest march and was
handed over to police. Farooq Ahmed
is running a religious seminary and is
not a stone-pelter. We fail to under-
stand why he has been kept in the
lock-up, said an elderly person from
Bugam who was waiting outside po-
lice station Kulgam.
A large number of people accord-
ing to reports are also seen outside
Hajin and Pattan police stations.
There are more than 30 youths in
Pattan Police lock up. Twenty-six
youth mostly from Palhalan area
have been booked under Public Safe-
ty Act and shifted to various jails. We
have been arriving here with a hope
that police will not book my son un-
der PSA, said a father of a 19 years
old son.
Some people from South Kash-
mirs Anantnag district alleged that
police have arrested those youth who
had been detained by them in 2008
and 2010 agitation.
A top police official said that ev-
ery arrest is made after proper verifi-
cation. We have proper videos of
youth indulging in stone-pelting. In-
nocents are not being touched, he
said adding that there dozens of
youth who are still evading arrests.

country. There is no need to politicize
the matter, Koul told KNS.
Pertinently, opposition parties
have termed holding of RSS rallies in
Jammu as provocative while former
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has de-
scribed it as unconstitutional, saying
such provocative rallies would only
increase communal tension in the
state.
To grant permission for holding
of rallies is the job of authorities. We
have no role in that, he said while re-
plying to a query.
Ashura procession was not al-
lowed in the Srinagar as authorities
had placed curfew and restrictions to
prevent these processions.
However, in Jammu, RSS was
granted permission to hold rallies.
Police

ing to locals was not a part of protest.
Locals at Chanapora also blocked
the road against the nocturnal raids.
They alleged that police picked up in-
nocent youth during night raid in the
area.
Protests erupted in Aloosa village
of Bandipora in north Kashmir on
Wednesday after government forces
allegedly went berserk.Reports and
witnesses said that forces damaged
residential houses, smashed window-
panes and beat up inmates without
any provocation in the village. To pro-
test the action, hundreds of men and
women took to streets and raised an-
ti-India and pro-freedom slogans.
Earlier, huge contingents of forces
were deployed in and around the vil-
lage to foil a march called by the sep-
aratist leadership. In their last weekly
protest calendar, the leadership had
asked people of Bandipora to march
towards Aloosa village on Wednes-
day.
At least 8 people were injured af-
ter government forces in a bid to foil
Frisal March fired tear-smoke shells
and pellets on Wednesday. Locals had

called for Frisal freedom march on
Wednesday; however, authorities im-
posed strict curfew and restriction in
the adjoining villages of Kulgam. Wit-
nesses told news agency CNS that a
large number of people tried to defy
curfew and started marching to-
wards the venue, however, at Bugam
village, they were stopped by Forces.
The agitated protesters pelted stones
while in retaliation, tear-smoke shells
and pellets were fired upon them, re-
sulting in the injuries of 8 people. Re-
ports said that police arrested two
youth during the melee and lodged
them in police station Kulgam. Locals
alleged that government forces dam-
aged at least 30 residential houses, 2
power transformers and 2 shops after
they went on the rampage. The Forc-
es fired pellets and tear-smoke shells
continuously to scare people, they
said.
Government Forces also foiled
Dadsar freedom march in Tral town
where a large contingent of Army,
CRPF and Police cordoned off the area
and restricted the movement of the
people. Locals alleged that govern-
ment forces caused damage to private
property at Mirpora, Ratherpora,
Batapora and Chandrigam as well.
The locals according to reports re-
sorted to stone-pelting shortly after
government forces started damaging
the houses and vehicles.
A police handout said that in view
of the sensitivity of certain areas cur-
few was imposed in some Police Sta-
tions of the old city. However, there
was no curfew elsewhere across the
valley. The situation remained largely
peaceful although a couple of stone
pelting incidents were reported.
The spokesperson said that a
number of processions were taken
out across Kashmir in which thou-
sands of people participated. Many of
these processions culminated peace-
fully,
Increased flow of traffic and
movement of people continued in
most areas of Srinagar and other
parts of valley. Vendors and shop-
keepers were seen doing their usual
business in the markets and towns of
the valley. Keeping continued pres-
sure on the trouble mongers and mis-
creants, 37 persons involved in
crimes of disruption of peace and
movement of people have been ar-
rested by police across Kashmir.

Minister for Food, Civil Supplies
and Consumer Affairs, Chowd-
hary Zulfkar Ali visited Tamil
Nadu and took stock of the suc-
cessful implementation of Elec-
tronic Public Distribution System
(ePDS) in the southern state.
The Minister also hold meet-
ing with senior functionaries of
Tamil Nadu government regard-
ing implementation of end to
end computerization.
As a part of study tour to
study successful implementation
of Electronic Public Distribution
System (ePDS) in different parts
of country, Chowdhary Zulfkar
Ali along with senior officers of
Food, Civil Supplies and Con-
sumer Affairs of the State vis-
ited various Fair Price shops and
Food Godowns in Chenni city
and its rural where they get in-
depth knowledge about success-
ful implementation of ePDS. The
Minister during his field visit
interacted with officials and
officers associated with Public
Distribution System and also
received knowledge about the
smart functioning of the Civil
Supplies and Consumer Protec-
tion Department of Tamil Nadu.
The Minister checked auto-
mation of Fair Price Shops in
Chenni and also visited hi-tech
godowns. He was briefed about
the automation system by Com-
missioner of Civil Supplies and
Consumer Protection Depart-
ment Tamil Nadu along with
other officers during field visit.
The Minister informed about
the system through power point
presentation by Department
Officers. The Officers briefed
Minister about online transac-
tion by using AADHAR and OTP
system, offline transaction
through local ePDS database,
billing compliance through SMS.
Officers also briefed about work-
ing of public portal for benefi-
ciaries, G2G service by web
portal, Integrations of DPC, FCI,
Godowns and FPS, operations
and maintenance and account-
ability system in the state.

Zulfkar Ali about software ap-
plication technology of open
source -cloud based, structured
database with configurable
entitlement engine & SLA Man-
agement, Application Software,
Multilingual support of software

the Department. The Minister
also checked functioning of Point
of Sale Machine (PoS) and termed
this machine as revolutionary
machine in Public Distribution
System. He said that J&K Govern-
ment is also going to install these
machines in the state so that to
bring total transparency in the
system. He said that this machine
will be big revolutionary step
of his Department to make the
Department corruption free. He
said the government would
ensure transparency in the De-
partment and this machine
would help to reach the goal in
near future. He said state gov-
ernment led by Chief Minister
Ms Mehbooba Mufti is commit-
ted to bring 100 per cent trans-
parency in the state and his
Department is working day and
night to realize the dream.
Tamil Nadu government has
implemented ePDS in highly
efficient manner where the
system is benefiting consumers
by lessening the chances of pil-
ferages. He said that he also want
to stop the practices of pilfer-
ages in Jammu and Kashmir and
for the same, he said. Our
Department is adopting ways

and means to make the system
fully transparent. He said that
the objective of the visit is to
get information about ePDS and
end to end computerization so
that the same is implemented
in Jammu & Kashmir in more
efficient manner.
The Minister appreciated toll
free grievance redrassal mech-
anism in Tamil Nadu and also
lauded them for Escalation Ma-
trix Monitoring & Alert system,
Live Chat, Email Services, Knowl-
edge base for stakeholders and
SMS service. He said that they
would also start SMS notification
for consumers in the state in
near future. He added that SMS
service is playing vital role in
making Food Department in
Tamil Nadu a transparent de-

2639 Km road network 26 bridges to be taken up in Phase 10
JAMMU: Minister for Public
Works and Parliamentary Affairs,
Abdul Rehman Veeri today took
detailed review of the progress
under PMGSY for Jammu division.
The Minister said that a com-
prehensive plan of action has
been prepared for Phase 10 of the
PMGSY and all concerned officials
need to gear up for its successful
execution and completion in the
state.
The Phase-10 with a sanc-
tioned cost of Rs. 1997.77 crore in-
cludes new connectivity/upgrada-
tion projects of 2639.89 Km road
and 26 bridges covering 1084.50
metre.
During the meeting, a detailed
report was also taken on the prog-
ress and achievements of Phase
I-IX.
The Minister expressed satis-
faction on the pace of work being
undertaken across Jammu prov-
ince under these phases and said
that with the successful imple-
mentation of PMGSY, a very posi-
tive transformation will be visible
in the state. This will lead to
strengthening the road networks
across the state, he added.
Taking note of concerns like
forest clearances, land acquisi-
tion, land compensation, he as-
sured that these issues will be
taken up with the concerned de-
partments and every effort will
be made to resolve them at the
earliest.
Veeri impressed upon the offi-
cers to expedite the ongoing proj-
ects under PMGSY so that the
same would be completed within
stipulated time frame.
Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak
Yojana (PMGSY) was launched on
December 25 2000 as a fully fund-
ed Centrally Sponsored Scheme to
provide all weather road connec-
tivity in rural areas of the country.
The programme envisages con-
necting all habitations with a pop-
ulation of 500 persons and above
in the plain areas and 250 persons
and above in hill States, the tribal
and the desert areas.

and Environment Choudhary Lal Singh

dressal camp at Kathua and listened peoples

Addressing a large gathering the Min-

to the people like safe drinking water, road
connectivity, uninterrupted power supply,
medicare facilities and schools.
Later, a deputation of brick kiln owners
of Kathua met the Minister and putforth
their demands and problems. They said
that the industry falls under the category
of small scale and requires help from the
pollution control department in following
the laid down norms so that pollution
emanating from there kilns can be effec-
tively controlled to the minimum permis-
sible level.

Now, de-escalate
tensions
The reckless warmongering
needs to stop, immediately. It
is sad to see the national media
competing to see who can be
more aggressive in provoking
the country to what seems as
opting for war. This is only
worsening the already fraught
situation where dire is need is
felt to de-escalate the tensions.
The quick escalation of border
skirmishes between India and
Pakistan is what can be termed
as a sad reality of the region.
Whenever tensions between
the two countries are high,
parts of the LoC see live am-
munition fired with the lives
of local populations disrupted
and several casualties among
security personnel and civil-
ians. Any jingoistic and ultra-
nationalistic media that are
often removed from reality can
have erratic consequences, es-
pecially when it comes to cre-
ate war hysteria among the
populations. As stated by one
of the political experts that,
the problems in the region are
not unilateral and one-direc-
tional. Pakistan has pursued
flawed policies in the past and
could do more to help end the
menace of terrorism in the re-
gion. The first and foremost
priority of the leaderships of
Pakistan and India should be
to ensure that no matter what
the circumstances and no mat-
ter what the concerns, the path
to war is not taken. India suf-
fered a blow in Uri as it did in
Pathankot. It has a right to
expect justice and Pakistan has
a responsibility to investigate
any links to citizens of this
country.

A Beguiling Short
Story Writer

T
wo Urdu short story writers fascinate
and exhilarate me the most. And, it is
not very difficult to assume these two
names, one, Sadat Hasan Manto and
another, Ismat Chughtai. Both have
the immense creative power to attract and allure
the millions of readers on the globe with their
powerful, lively, beautiful and enchanting stories.
Even in this age of technology and fast surfing in-
ternet, they command huge respect.
The question arises here naturally that what
makes them bewitching, even in the presence of
thousands of other writers of almost the same
caliber. The world is not devoid of good and great
writers, but surely, the writers like Manto and Ismat
are not so many.
What makes me sad to think that in Urdu, now,
a very fewpowerful story appears these days. Why
is it so? Where weactually lack? Are we less tal-
ented or we have not such power and grit to delve
deep into the dirt of the society as these great writ-
ers used to do in their own time.
Women have always been taken as the most
suppressed and oppressed being in the society.
Even in this so called modern day, we find innumer-
able examples of their exploitations. Of late, a debate
has been going on in the newspapers and television
channels that how the triple Talaaq in one go is
justified. No doubt, it hits harder to those women
who are poor and illiterate, those women, who
dont know how to safeguard themselves from the
onslaught of the brutality of so-called civilized
men. They enjoy a little say in the marriages and
issues of livelihood. Still, they get killed in the name
of saving the honor of the clan and society, leave
dowry and on the issue giving birth of children,
whether it is a girl or a boy.
If there are so many issues related to women
exist, then, why not powerful story writers like
Ismat and Manto are coming these days?
We should surely think about it seriously.
I have always read Ismats stories with much
interest and enthusiasm. These stores transport
me in a world which is although quite familiar,
but very new and strange. We get to know such
characters which are scattered here and there in
thousands around us, but they are not taken se-
riously and recognized by the society. They are
faceless women and deprived girls and women
with whom no any kind of glamour isever attached
to.
I truly admire Ismat like millions of others. Of
late, I got the chance to read some of her short
stories. These stories not only mesmerized me as
a reader, but left me spellbound to think that how
powerful writer Ismat was! Whenever she sat for
penning the beautiful and beguiling short stories,
she left an inedible mark on the mind of the readers.
I would rather say that she did not compose the
stories, but the stories got themselves composed
by her mighty pen and words.
I have chosen the Chauthi Ka Joda. It is a very
powerful story written in first person. The narrator
is the younger sister of Akbari. Akbari is a poor and
frail girl of about 25 or 26. Here, the writer has not
mentioned her age, but her personalitysuggests
that she was matured and passing her age of mar-
riage according to the Indian standard very fast.
She has been waiting to get married for quite a long
time. She is an orphan. Her father has died and her
mother looks after her and her younger sisterunder
the weight of crushing and debilitating poverty.

Her only wish is to see them get married as soon
as possible, especially her eldest daughter. She earns
her living by sewing clothes for others.
But no one comes to them with a decent mar-
riage proposal for Akbari, who was losing her sheen
and attractiveness fast day-by-day like a withering
flower of a stunted plant.
Suddenly, a cousin of Akbari appears in the
scene. His name is Rahat. He, as his name denotes,
does not appear as a soothing calm for the tensed
family, but for himself. He lives with themand en-
joys the best hospitality offered by them. More than
the best delicacies prepared by both Akbari and
her mother and her younger daughter, he also re-
ceives utmost love and care just in a hope that one
day he would announce that he was going to mar-
ry with Akbari. Instead of developing a loving rela-
tion with that infatuated soul, he falls deceptively
in the charm of the younger sister, the main nar-
rator of the story. She is a brave girl and knows how
to protect her honor in the best possible way.She
doesnt fall into his trap and finally, Rahat, instead
of giving them a glad tidings, breaks this sad news
to them that he was going to leave this place soon
because his marriage with another girl of his choice
has been fixed.
No doubt, this makes the entire family crest-
fallen and leaves them in the lurch. Akbari finally
succumbs to her illness caused by her deadly de-
pression.
The story is very powerful and the language is
very stylish, spoken and colloquial as it looks that
it is not the language of the literature, but the day-
to-day tongs of the common men and women. How
she swims smoothly in the turbulent and stormy
water of emotion and sentiments of the characters
with her own beautiful and effortless style and
language is a thing to watch and cherish.
I have seen many such families where such
incidents happened. One example will be enough
to suffice my claim.
I know one family who has a daughter. The lady
is a housewife and works in her free hours as a
seamstress. However, her husband is very much
alive and works on a contractual basis in a govern-
ment department. They want to marry their only
daughter with any boy of close relation so their
daughter could live in a familiar and happy environ-
ment. The girls parents almost dread to see their
only daughter going to get married into a distant
family.
The mother invites all eligible bachelors of her
close relations like the sons of her sisters, brothers
and such other relations. They come, enjoy the best
hospitality the family can offer, and finally, when
it comes to give their nod for the marriage, they
run off with some excuses, later to be married with
the girls of their own choices.
Why our daughters and sisters are always looked
upon meanly and negatively in our society when
the matter of marriage comes to strike them? Cant
they enjoy the same status and privilege as their
male counterparts enjoy? Why?
Clearly, we need such people who can think
progressively and behave like an equal partner, not
as a privileged one.

Lays Bricks 3 Times as Fast
as Human Workers
Construction Robot SAM,
short for semi automated
mason, is a robotic bricklayer
being used to increase produc-
tivity as it works with human
masons.
SAM and a human mason
work together. Construction
Robot repetitively lays bricks,
leaving the detailed finishing
touches to the mason.
In this human-robot team,
the robot is responsible for the
more rote tasks: picking up
bricks, applying mortar, and
placing them in their desig-
nated location. A human handles
the more nuanced activities, like
setting up the worksite, laying
bricks in tricky areas, such as
corners, and handling aesthet-
ic details, like cleaning up excess
mortar.
Even in completing repet-
itive tasks, SAM still has to be
fairly adaptable. Its able to
complete precise and level work
while mounted on a scaffold
that sways slightly in the wind.
The robot can correct for the
differences between theo-
retical building specifications
and whats actually on site, says
Scott Peters, cofounder of Con-
struction Robotics, a company
based in Victor, New York, that
designed SAM as its debut
product.
In construction, your design
will say that a window is lo-
cated exactly 30 feet from the
corner of a building, and in
reality when you get to the
building, nothing is ever where
it says its supposed to be,
Peters says. Masons know how
to adapt to that, so we had to
design a robot that knows how
to do that, too.
In its current iteration, the
system is best suited to work
on large swaths of flat walls,
most commonly found in proj-
ects for universities, hospitals,
and other large sites. But some
amount of detailed work isnt
beyond the systems abilities.
Construction Robot SAM can
emblazon a company logo in
brick on a wall, for instance, by
following a pixelated map of
the image. It can also bump bricks
in or out by about half an inch,
to create a textured look to a
wall face.
SAM is able to apply mortar
to bricks before laying them,
without human help. The Con-
struction Robot is able to do all
of this using a set of algorithms,
a handful of sensors that mea-
sure incline angles, velocity, and
orientation, and a laser. The
laser is rigged up between two
poles at the extreme left and
right sides of the robots work
space, and moves up and down
the wall as work progresses to
act as an anchor point for the
robot. Without this, the robot
would not know exactly where
to lay brick, or how to assess its
motion on the scaffold relative
to where the wall is.
Peters says SAMs purpose
is to leverage human jobs, not
entirely replace them, a human
mason can lay about 300 to 500
bricks a day, while SAM can lay
about 800 to 1,200 bricks a day.

the productivity of having four
or more masons on the job.

ohammad Aleem, the
writer of the novel
Rabia: Through all
joys and sorrows has
written a remarkable
piece. No doubt! He delves unflinch-
ingly into the confounded realities of the
women through his book. This culture
where we live in has certain restrictions
and traditions which are constrained to
its doctrines about the rules of mar-
riages, including the choice of groom by
ones own parents only. The writer has
adroitly raised the issue which is very
common in our lives.
Rabia, the protagonist in this novel
faces a lot of flak. Her parents get her
married to a boy of their choice in a re-
spected family without her consent. When
she finally sets into the new chapter of
her life, she not only discards the boy
completely, but eventually refuses to live
with him. She doesnt like him because
he is not handsome and attractive. The
writer wants people to know more about
those old customs which were very much
prevalent in our society earlier, and still,
that exists in many parts of India. These
kinds of incidents used to happen because
of peoples orthodox mindsets. Rabia
unmistakably explains those minds in
this book. A simple, beautiful girl is just
asking for her dream man, thats it. But
who is there to fulfill her dream. She
faces early marriage, no complete edu-
cation, extreme poverty, early widow-
hood, and all those gratuitous criticisms
which she wasnt conscientious for. At
one point of time, she even felt to frown
on her set rules of her religion which
is a prohibited thing according to our
religious beliefs. Her mind starts doing
the rounds with malevolent thoughts
because of all these miseries. And the
author has without a doubt explained
this through Rabias intellect. Then,
why on earth was only she targeted
with such savagery and brutality. She
seemed to ask the question directly to
the almighty God. But the very next
moment she feared that it would be
considered a kind of apostasy on her
part if she showed the temerity of cross-
ing the boundary of set limits of her
religion, and that would be enough to
put her in the raging hell fire. She thinks.
I think this book should be made into
films to make this discussion reach to a
larger audience in our society. Time and
again, films have been made on these
kinds of issues. This one has the potency
of a strong script. Making bad, superflu-

ous and dim-witted kind of films in its
place, the filmmakers should stick to this
sort of thought provoking issues. It shows
the writers non-orthodox outlook towards
the society. There is another character
of Tabassum, which is also worth prais-
ing. The kind of degradation she faces is
very widespread in our society and even
era before us. She for a very long time,
manages to live without her husband
with her in-laws bravely and consoles
herself even after her husband leaves her
because of another girl. Her bravery is of
another kind which invites sympathy
from the reader. However, we expect
that she should also behave like her
sister-in-law, Rabia, who seems deter-
mined to break all decadent rules and
taboos of the society. But, it will be an

will behave in a same way. It is very much

against the law of nature.
The writer has also endeavored to
explain the religion, Islam quiet well,
which many people have misunderstood.
It never objected to marry a girl or a
boy with his or her own choice. It is
mandatory to seek consent before seal-
ing the fate of a woman or man in mar-
riage. But, we pay little regard and
attention to it. And that carelessness
and negligence result in destroying
many married lives.
The third character, Lata was simply
killed for marrying a person of her love
who was outside of her religious iden-
tity. It reminds the raging debate around
the love Jihad, which the right wing ex-
tremist Hindu groups have raised at a
number of times lately. Can anyone for-
get that how many innocent girls and
boys were killed in Haryana, UP and
Rajasthan and other states for marrying
to a man or a woman outside of their
religion and caste in the name of saving
ones honor?
This novel demands a very a close
and insightful reading, so the intricacies
of the characters and as well as the theme
could be properly unraveled.
The language is simple and it is a great
page turner.
I do hope that this book will invite
serious discussion in literary circles.

A Mysterious Girl

CHAPTERTWO:
She made herself busy with the
household and business activities
again. She sent many new ships of
goods to the foreign countries putting
in charge of some of the best and
trusted workers. The life was again as
usual as it was when her beloved fa-
ther was alive.
She also started praying to God to
send her that charismatic man who
could be her life partner and in whose
company she could seek love and ful-
fillment.
It was a sheer chance that one day
when Husn Bano was sitting on the
balcony of her mansion and watching
the hustle and bustle of the towns life,
her eyes fell suddenly on a holy man.
He was middle aged. There were many
pupils around him who looked so ea-
ger to take care of his every need and
comfort. They would put silver bricks
under his feet, so he could walk on it
like a king.
It impressed Husn Bano a lot. She
could not stop herself from falling in
his charm, instantly. She said to her
maidservant, Jahan Ara, This man
seems to hold great mystical power.
See, how he walks and treads his path.
There is a kind of awe and glory in his
every step.
The maidservant replied, This
man is a spiritual teacher of the king.
After every three to four months, the
king himself pays a visit to him. He
lives in a far place in a hut surrounded
by thick wood. He seldom comes to
this town. No one can match him in
his piousness.
Husn Ban said quite eagerly, If you
allow me, I will invite him to be our
guest. I also want to get benefited
from his noble deeds.
The maidservant nodded in affir-
mation. And it made Husn Bano also
very happy.
The very next day, she sent a mes-
senger to him and invited to her place.
He also gave his consent happily as he
knew his late father and the status he
enjoyed in the kingdom as a wise and
rich merchant.
The next day, in the morning,
when the sun rose to some height and
it showed its bright and glowing face
behind the long pine trees, the holy
man, who was known as Shah Sahib,
arrived with his entourage of trusted
pupils.
Husn Bano spared not a single
chance to make her guest happy and
contented. She had asked her servants
to prepare the best food for the guests.
She hoped that her services to the holy
man would bring successes both in
this world and in the afterlife due to
his prayers to God for her. Moreover,
she could find a good husband and her
business would flourish and reach to a
new height.
But, when the holy man, Shah Sa-
hib sat in the chair with all his pupils
around him, and the best food and
delicacies were brought in, he simply
said, Whats the use of all these
things for me?
But, Husn Bano asked him benign-
ly to take something from it.
He saw towards her and said, If
you say so, then, I will not make you
sad.
He started eating. His pupils also
followed him. But he and his pupils
eyes were set on the other precious
things which were spread before them
in abundance like the gold plates, gold
flower vessels and other such valuable
things. The splendor and glory was ev-
ident from the every part of the house.
While he was eating, his mind was
constantly occupied with the thought
that how could the late merchant
gather such vast wealth and how
could he get a fair share of it.
When he finished having his food,
the best perfume was brought in for
him. He rubbed it on his hand, beard
and white cloak also. Then, he raised
his hand heavenward and started
praying in the best and polished
words he could choose and brought to
his lips.
Finally, he departed and left a deep
impact on the mind of the young and
pretty, Husn Bano.
