now have plenty of local options for
food and drink beyond the campus

hope it will be a place where all Baldwin
City residents and students alike can
enjoy a warm cup of coffee.
Lynda Lewis works in the BU Alumni
Center as an administrative assistant
and owns Perks Coffee House and Party
Shop along with her husband. They also
own JBC Liquors, next door to Perks.
With Perks, Lewis said she wanted to
create a space where people didnt have
to just grab their coffee and leave. She
hopes the indoor seating will draw both
students and residents alike.
Its a good quiet place to meet,
Lewis said. We wanted to create a place
to relax.
The shop has its own wifi, tables for
computers, games and books. Lewis

said she hopes the indoor seating will
generate business as people will want
a place to sit and warm up, especially
during the winter months.
Sophomore Mitchell Lierz is an avid
coffee drinker and said he chooses
local coffee shops because they have
more personality compared to chain
shops. He hopes for the success of Perks
and believes Baker students could
contribute to its success.
As a small business, they will grow
and continue to get better, Lierz said.
He said he could see Perks as a
space for late night study groups and
preparation for final exams.
Lewis said Perks also sells
doughnuts, brownies, cookies and
homemade banana bread.

Espresso Caf is a small-town treasure,
offering doughnuts, old-school classics
such as biscuits and gravy and a wide
variety of caffeinated beverages.
The Daylight Espresso Caf was
established in 2008. It is owned and
operated by Micheal Langrehr, who
believes that coffee is much more than
a beverage.
Some customers seem to have made
the caf their second home, particularly
in the mornings. The caf is decorated
with wooden furnishings and greenery
that provide a cheerful atmosphere.
We love serving coffee to the
community, Langrehr said. It really
is a family affair. My whole family

Elizabeth Arnold said. The free wifi
makes it such a convenient place to
get things done while grabbing a great
coffee or snack.
Arnold believes that the overall
environment is what makes the coffee
shop so special.
What it may lack in size, it makes
up for in charm, Arnold said.
Although it may seem hidden among
the more prominent neighboring
restaurants, the Daylight Espresso Caf
combines a comfortable atmosphere
with homemade beverages and food.

Jos Diner

T he local dining experience wouldnt be the
same without the tasty food and friendly
faces at Baldwin Citys local mom-and-pop
restaurant, Jos Diner. The regular customers
range from infant grandchildren to their elderly
great-grandparents. To get a sense of the local
popularity of Jos Diner, just check out the
crowded parking lot on a typical morning. We
recommend anything that includes chicken or is
on the breakfast menu.

& Bakery
719 Eighth St.
H omestead Kitchen and Bakery opened last
November and has been the talk of the town
ever since. Community members and Baker
students alike enjoy the homey atmosphere and
food. The bakery offers a new space for students
to socialize and study besides the on-campus
Daily Grind. The bakery serves baked goods,
wraps, sandwiches, soups and salads. It will also
offer a Small Bites menu featuring a cheese
board and fruit, roasted Brussels sprouts and
baguette slices with vinaigrette.
El Patron

E
l Patron is a campus-wide favorite for BU students.
With a happy hour Monday through Friday from
2 to 4 p.m., frugal upperclassmen looking for a study
break involving tequila know exactly where to go. The
menu includes combinations of Mexican favorites as
well as a la carte items. Whether going with friends
after class or taking visiting family members to a
Baldwin City staple, El Patron is there to greet you
with chips and salsa with every visit.

M ooses Backwoods BBQ was once housed in a
food truck but now it has its own storefront
alongside the Baldwin City Kwik Shop. The Mooses
menu features ribs, wings, brisket, pulled pork and
other smoked meats with unique sauces and flavors.
Plenty of side dishes are available as well. In addition
to sit-down dining, Mooses offers catering services.
BU students dont have to drive all the way to Kansas
City for their barbecue cravings.

J oy Gardens buffet makes it easy to try new things or
get as much as you want. Members of the wait staff are
quiet and wont constantly bother you with asking how
your meal is, but they are quick to refill drinks.
Wooden Spoke
Restaurant
203 First St.
T
he Wooden Spoke provides a country-themed, friendly
and warm environment that a visitor would expect
from a small-town restaurant. The food is country-style,
featuring homemade family meals that many Kansans
grew up with, especially country-fried steak. Members of
the staff are warm and respectful, using the terms darlin
and yall. The interior feels like a cozy old cabin, with
log-lined walls and wooden booths. The main portions are
large and the sides are bountiful. Overall, if you are looking
for a local, traditional and rustic dining experience, the
Wooden Spoke is the place to go.

Retiring owner
brings hospitality
to Baldwin City
B efore taking over Goodcents Subs
in Baldwin City, Chip Hornberger
owned a dairy farm for 35 years, but
after some health problems, he was
looking for something new.
I saw it was for sale, and it was
something I was always interested
in, Hornberger said. So thats what I being around somebody that will talk
decided to do as an early retirement.
When Hornberger took over the
Baldwin City location, at 912 Ames St.,
it had been open for five years, and he
has owned it for the past 10. Now he
must decide its future.
I dont really know when I plan
to retire, but the business is for sale
right now, Hornberger said. It may
be another year before I really decide
what to do.
Throughout his years at the store,
he said he has enjoyed some pretty
good times.
The people have been the best
part, Hornberger said. Before, I was
around cows all the time, and it is nice
back to you.
Over the years, many Baker
students have worked at the store
under Hornberger.
The store has a really good
atmosphere, Jody Gunther, a former
BU student and past Goodcents
employee, said.
Hornberger said he would like to
think he has made a positive impact
for students, since over the years
approximately 90 percent of the
employees have been Baker students.
I started working here my senior
year of high school, which was about
a year and a half ago, BU sophomore
Carody Franklin said.
Goodcents also donates to BU
athletics and activities, including
sandwiches for the Baker Oranges print
production nights.
We always make sandwiches for
the basketball and football teams,
Franklin said. In return, Goodcents
gets a shoutout at football and
basketball games.
The local Goodcents has not only
impacted Baker students but also
those in the community who eat there
on a regular basis. Gunther said one
of her favorite parts about working is
getting to know the customers who
come in frequently
People are positive, and when you
walk in they say hi, Gunther said.
The business remains popular with
students.
I love Goodcents, freshman Maggie
Pruitt said. The food is always really
fresh, and the employees are super
welcoming.
For the short term, students who
visit the local Goodcents will continue
to enjoy Hornbergers hospitality.
