Material Order- Justification

While making the order I concentrated on the following areas where I felt instructional materials were
needed:

Needs of School Community

In the beginning, while thinking about the materials that I would consider for this order I tried to go
about it from a media specialist's point of view. However, after consideration I started to think what is
the library's role in the school and how does it meet the needs of the school. The library is a central
focus of the school in that it supports not only students, but teachers. Students come to the library to
check out books, conduct research, and expand their knowledge. It supports teachers by having the
resources for teachers to help students achieve their potential. With this in mind, I contacted several
teachers from all grade levels (6-8) in all subject areas and asked what their needs were as far as what
the library lacked for their content areas.

ELA: 7th grade teachers indicated they needed materials for The Watson's Go to Birmingham-1963
by Christopher Paul Curtis and resources for While the World Watched by Carolyn Maull McKinstry
as a companion in order to meet the requirements of the county that all middle schools read the same
novels. 6Th grade ELA teachers requested a resource for Comprehension skills. I did not hear back from
8th grade about any specific needs. However, I did include a teacher resource that can be utilized in 8th
grade.

SCIENCE: All science teachers requested DVDs as an additional resource for Common Core
Standards. Each grade level gave me a list of Bill Nye Videos that pertained to their particular grade
level.

Audiovisual: Bill Nye Videos: Blood & Circulation, Brain, Cells, Digestion, Eyeball, Food Web,
Germs, Heart, Invertebrates, Nuclear Energy, Population, Skin, Smell, Sports, and Sports.
SOCIAL STUDIES: The only social studies teacher I heard back from was 6th grade. She requested
multi-user ebooks for the Cold war and European Union, and the DVD He Named Me Malala.

Ebooks and Digital: 15 multi-user eBooks about various member union countries.
1 multi-user eBook on the Cold war

Updating Dewey Range From Collection Analysis:

For my collection analysis I chose the 800 Dewey range and found it to be very outdated. In my
interview with the media specialist, the only circulation that was evident concerned poetry. She also
stated that ELA teachers were interested in updating the poetry selection to meet the needs of the
Common Core Standards.

Books: I ordered a variety of books from various poets such as Edgar Allen Poe, E.E. Cummings,
Emily Dickinson, Maya Angelou, Walt Whitman, and William Shakespeare. I also ordered poetry
books on a variety of subjects: acrostics, action, hip-hop, bilingual, humorous, choices, emotions,
natural world, romance, sports, and Thanksgiving.

eBooks: Haikus, and Voyages-Walt Whitman

Audiovisual: Stardines Swim High Across the Sky and Other Poems.

Adding to Fiction for Recreational Reading and Building eBook collection:

In discussing this assignment with the media specialist, she expressed the desire to build up the
library eBook collection as well as print copies. I chose a variety of books that will hopefully reach the
interest of all students in our school

Books: I ordered books that will interest boys and girls within Lexile ranges for low to high readers.

ebooks: I ordered 17 eBooks to build the collection. Lexile ranges from low to high in a variety of
titles for boys and girls interests.
