YEAR 11 RELIGIOUS
RETREAT
On Monday, 13 October, 53 very impatient Year 11 students along with 4 not so excited teachers,
embarked on what was for some people their first time on a plane and for all of us an unforgettable
holiday. Once we arrived at Brisbane Airport, we were all happy to hear that we were all going to be
thrown onto a bus for the next two and a half hours until we reach our campsite, because sitting next
to Mr Dialektakis on the plane wasnt torture enough!

After we settled in from our flight and numerous bus rides, we arrived at the Greek Orthodox
Archdiocese of Australia Bribie Island Retreat and Recreation Centre. The day began with an
engaging PowerPoint presentation on The Incarnation and Modern Man. We were taught that we
should not boast or expect praise for our deeds. We explored the nature of sacrifice, and how we
should be selfless and always ready to help others, rather than letting greed engulf our hearts. Father
also explained the powerful meaning of the shortest yet most meaningful verse in the Bible Jesus
wept and reminded us that just as God loves us unconditionally, so should we love everyone else.

On Wednesday morning, we participated in a workshop on stress management. Ms Leodis explained

stress and we participated in various activities to help broaden our understanding of stress and
strategies to manage it. This workshop strengthened and empowered us for the HSC and our future
endeavours. In the evening, Father Peter organised for us to watch a Russian biographical film titled
Ostrov which taught us about the importance of self-reflection, humility and putting our trust in God.

Thursday was an early start for us, beginning with the Divine Liturgy conducted by Father Peter and
Father Dimitri Tsakas in the onsite Church. After the service, we received an enlightening sermon
from Father Dimitri who was a Parish Priest at St Euphemia until 1997. He explained the importance
of finding a purpose in life. After this, we went fishing and it appeared that Father Peter misunderstood
Father Dimitris advice to find a purpose in life, for instead of fish he found a chair in the ocean. We
ended the day with a not-so-traditional campfire, featuring DJ Preva, who played his music mixes for
us as we enjoyed a night of relaxing, bonding and playing games.

Funny moments included the girls setting their phone alarms for 3 00 am after the teachers collected
them for the night. This was reciprocated by the teachers who would not allow us to fall asleep on
the bus! Not only was this a trip of pranks, but more importantly, it was a spiritual retreat that helped
us to come closer as a group and gave us the opportunity to relax and have fun before we settle into
Year 12.

On behalf of Year 11, we would like to thank Father Peter, Mr Prevezanos, Mr Dialektakis and Ms
Leodis for all the hard work, time, and effort they put into organising a memorable camp. Retreat was
truly a spiritual experience, providing us with an opportunity to learn about ourselves, to make new
friendships and strengthen old ones.

May God be with us always and guide us through this year and every year of our lives to achieve
success and always Strive for Excellence.

YEAR 9 CAMP

On Wednesday, 26 November Year 9 along with Ms Efthymiou,

Mr Spanos, Ms Fajloun and our counsellor Ms Leodis departed
for Yarramundi camp. It was a 55 minute drive from school.
Upon our arrival, the loud noises ceased as everyone took in
the beauty of the natural environment.

On the first day we did horse riding, swimming and played

soccer and basketball. At our first meal everybody was
astonished at the amazing food which had been prepared for
us

On Wednesday night Ms Leodis organised a bonding activity

which allowed us to get to know each other better. This
definitely helped to unite us all throughout the rest of our
experiences at the camp.

The second day was spent participating in new activities. On the last evening, Ms Efthymiou organised a dress up
party where Mr Prevezanos was our DJ. We had a lot of fun dressing up as famous friends.

On Friday morning we departed the camp grounds and made our way to our final activity, Go-Karting. That was a lot
of fun! Throughout the camp everyone faced their fears and enjoyed many new experiences. Overall, camp was a
wonderful bonding experience!
