COURSE OBJECTIVE:

The Student will attain the knowledge of different types of Materials which can be engineered depending
upon their properties suitable to specific applications in Engineering and Technology.

COURSE RATIONALE:

Engineering Materials is a dynamic field which involves manufacturing of materials for desired specification and to
know their structures, properties and performance. Material scientists working in laboratories, industries, strive to
understand and manipulate the structure of materials at molecular level. Because of the advancement in materials
science a new class of materials called Nano material has been developed. Further these Nano materials have
revolutioned the world with many fascinating devices and enhancing properties which could have been envisioned
before. All sophisticated products like- computers, aircraft, biomedical devices etc., requires materials manufactured
to precise specifications. The evolution of advanced products can be hobbled by the limitations of the available
materials.

Overall, the course Engineering Materials is useful to an engineering student to understand importance of
engineering material in the current technological era.
COURSE OUTCOMES (COs):

1. Understand the concepts of crystallography and crystalline imperfections in order to determine crystal structures
and to identify defects in crystals.

2. Understand electrical and optical properties of materials and apply them to know various mechanisms involved in
electrical, electronic, optical, optoelectronic devices.

3. Understand mechanical and thermal properties of materials and apprehend their importance in identification of
