3
Parent-Child Interaction Therapy
Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is an empirically-supported treatment for conduct-
disordered young children that places emphasis on improving the quality of the parent-child
relationship and changing parent-child interaction patterns. In PCIT, parents are taught specific
skills to establish a nurturing and secure relationship with their child while increasing their
childs prosocial behavior and decreasing negative behavior. This treatment focuses on two basic
interactions: Child Directed Interaction (CDI) is similar to play therapy in that parents engage
their child in a play situation with the goal of strengthening the parent-child relationship; Parent
Directed Interaction (PDI) resembles clinical behavior therapy in that parents learn to use
specific behavior management techniques as they play with their child.

Behavioral Health Intervention Services (BHIS)

Behavioral Health Intervention Services are available for either adults or children who have
Iowa Title XIX insurance. BHI services begin with a behavioral health assessment (completed by
a licensed clinician). The assessment determines a diagnosis and recommendations for service.
This written recommendation is basically a prescription for services.
BHI services are intended to build skills to help decrease symptoms and behaviors
associated with a diagnosed psychological disorder. Services also include instructional strategies
to help the family cope with the individuals symptoms and manage his/her behaviors. The
program focus is on mental health recovery and promoting individual resilience.
BEHAVIORAL HEALTH INTERVENTION SERVICES FOR YOUTH:
BHIS youth services are provided to children and adolescents under 21 years of age (and
their families) to restore the childs mental health function to the level of other children of
that age and ability. The child must have the capability to learn the behavior. The
services are designed to restore mental health functioning that the child lost or never
achieved because of interference in the normal maturational and learning process due to
individual or parental dysfunction.
BEHAVIORAL HEALTH INTERVENTION SERVICES FOR ADULTS:
BHIS adult services are provided to individuals who are 18 years of age and older to
restore their mental health functioning. The interventions are intended to reduce or
eliminate psychological barriers that interfere with an individuals ability to successfully
manage their symptoms. They also are intended to assist the individual in maximizing
their ability to live and participate in the community.

Children's Mental Health Waiver Services

The intent of the Medicaid Home and Community Based Childrens Mental Health
Waiver (CMH) is to identify services/supports that are not available through other mental health
programs/services that can be utilized in conjunction with traditional services to develop a
comprehensive support system for children with serious emotional disturbance. These services
will allow children in this targeted population to remain in their homes and communities.
CMH Waiver services are individualized to meet the needs of each child. Decisions regarding
what services are appropriate, the number of units or the dollar amounts of the appropriate
services are based on the childs needs as determined by the child, the childs family and an
interdisciplinary team.

4
The CMH Waiver services provided by Choices Counseling and Consulting, Inc. include:
Family and Community Support Services
This service shall support the child and his/her family by helping them with the
development and implementation of strategies and interventions that will result in the
reduction of stress and depression and will increase the childs and familys social and
emotional strength.
In Home Family Therapy
In-home family therapy services are skilled therapeutic services provided to the child and
family. Services will increase the child and familys ability to cope with the effects of the
childs serious emotional disturbance on the family relationships. The goal of in-home
family therapy is to maintain a cohesive family unit. The service must support the family
in developing coping strategies that will enable the child to continue living within the
family environment.
Supervised Visitation Services
Individuals who are court ordered to receive supervised parent-child visitation are
welcome to contact Choices Counseling and Consulting, Inc. to discuss their individual
situation and develop a plan for visitation that meets the needs of the children and
complies with all court orders. These services are "private pay" and the agency should be
contacted to discuss rates and availability.
