What is Homeostasis?

Homeostasis is the tendency for the human body to maintain a state of equilibrium. It is
essential for our survival and occurs at different levels - within the cell, within organs and
tissues, and among populations in ecosystems.

To maintain homeostasis, different parts must communicate with each other. Feedback
loops are the fundamental building blocks of homeostasis. All feedback loops start at a
set point. They also have multiple parts:

1. Stimulus what is the change in the environment?

2. Sensor/receptor what detects the changes?
3. Control centre what processes the information about the change?
4. Effector what responds to the change?
5. Response what is the result/how is homeostasis maintained?

An example of a feedback loop is a heating system in a house:

Stimulus (temperature rises) Sensor (thermometer in thermostat detects rise in

temperature) Control centre (thermostat sends information to radiator) Effector
(heating system turns off) Response (temperature decreases)
