Lebanese Prime Minister Raq Hariri was assassinated, 21 others died and 226 injured on
14February 2005, as a result of a terrorist act in which a suicide bomber detonated a large
quantity of high explosives concealed in a van.
Badreddine is accused of having participated in a conspiracy with others aimed at committing
a terrorist act to assassinate Raq Hariri. The indictment further alleges that Mr. Badreddine
monitored the physical perpetration of the attack. Mr. Badreddine is also accused of
having monitored and coordinated, together with Salim Jamil Ayyash, the surveillance of
Raq Hariri in preparation for the attack and the purchase of the van used during the attack.
Mr. Badreddine is further accused of having been implicated in the preparation of the false
claim of responsibility for the purposes of shielding the real perpetrators of the bombing
February 2012, the STL trial Chamber decided to try Mr. Badreddine and the three other
accused in the
Salim Jamil Ayyash is currently at large. On 1 February 2012 the STL Trial Chamber decided
to try Salim Jamil Ayyash and three others in absentia. The trial is ongoing.
