CEIE 413/513 REINFORCED CONCRETE DESIGN

[Fall 2012]

Homework # 1 [due September 12]

Note:
CEIE 413 students must complete problem 1 (45%), problem 2 (25%) and problem 3 (30%).
CEIE 513 students must complete problem 1 (35%), problem 2 (15%), problem 3 (20%), problem 4
(15%) and problem 5 (15%).
The code refers to Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete (ACI 318-11) and
Commentary.
The figures shown below are not drawn to scale.

Problem 1:
The cantilever beam shown in the figure supports unfactored superimposed dead load of 3 kip/ft (in
addition to its self-weight) and unfactored live load of 5 kip/ft. Using 5000 psi normal weight concrete
and Grade-60 rebars,
check if the given section has enough flexural capacity to carry the applied loads (i.e. compare Mn
and Mu).
what is the minimum area of reinforcement (As, min) required by the code for this section?
Assume a cover of 2.5 in. to the center of the rebars.

Problem 2:
The cross-section shown in the figure below is presented as an alternative design to problem 1.
According to the code, does this cross-section provide enough design moment capacity to carry the
loads? Use the same concrete strength and rebar grade given in problem #1. Assume a cover of 2.5 in.

Problem 3:
The simply supported beam shown in the figure supports unfactored superimposed dead load of 1.7

kip/ft (in addition to its self-weight). If the demand to capacity ratio of the given section is 0.85,
Mn

determine the maximum allowable unfactored live load that can be applied on the beam. Use 4000 psi
normal weight concrete and Grade-60 rebars. Assume a cover of 2.5 in. to the center of the rebars.

Problem 4: (for CEIE 513 students only)
Assume that a rectangular beam of width, b, and effective depth, d, is reinforced with a single layer of
rebars. The area of the rebars is As, the compressive strength of concrete is fc and the yield strength of
rebars is fy. By definition,
As

fy
the reinforcement index, , is
fc
Mn
the flexural resistance, R, is R

At the tension controlled limit (t = 0.005), show that
fc
-the reinforcement ratio is given by 0.319 1

fy

-the design moment strength is given by Mn 0.9 b d 2 f y (1 0.188 1 )

-the reinforcement ratio is given by 0.319 1

-the flexural resistance factor is given by R f c ( 1 0.59 )

Problem 5: (for CEIE 513 students only)

ACI 10.2.6 states, The relationship between concrete compressive stress distribution and concrete
strain shall be assumed to be rectangular, trapezoidal, parabolic or any other shape that results in
prediction of strength in substantial agreement with results of comprehensive tests.

Calculate the design moment capacity of the cross-section given in problem #2 using a parabolic stress
distribution with a peak value of fc at the extreme compression face. Note that for a parabolic stress
distribution with a peak value of fc at the extreme compression face, the compression force carried by
the concrete and the nominal moment are given by

CC fc b c

3 3
Mn T (d c) CC ( d c)
8 8
Compare design moment strength values obtained using the effective rectangular stress block and the
parabolic stress distributions.
