Teaching with Educational technology

The Why The What The How

1.
The WHY
Why are you here?
Research on Generation Z (Born 2000-2016)
Independent, stubborn, pragmatic, and always in a rush
Cynical, private, entrepreneurial, multitasking, hyper-aware,
technology-reliant
Most technologically advanced generation in history.
They have never known a non-digital world
They seek validation (i.e. Twitter, Snapchat)
highly entrepreneurial, pluralistic, and determined to take charge of
their own futures (Generation Z: What makes them Tick)
They multitask: talk, listen to music, text, browse internet and watch TV
Limited Attention span: middle school and teens are 15-20 minutes
(adults have 30 min span).
Engage multiple intelligences during each class.
3 Hours a day in front of a screen (average, outside of school)
Live in constant fear of missing out (FOMO)
Watch Youtube, Vlogs, Vines, SnapChat
Most access to information than any other generation.
Students are not consumers of facts. They are creators of content.

Importance of skills
21st Century Skills: Creativity, Collaboration,
Critical Thinking, and Communication (4Cs)
Common Core and NGSS
Digital immigrants and digital natives
Learner-centered, student-centered
Students are producers, creators
Training students to think beyond automation.
Jobs they will have may have not been created yet
They no longer see their primary role as
being the king or queen of the classroom,
a benevolent dictator deciding whats
best for the powerless underlings in their
care. Theyve found they accomplish
more if they adopt the role of
educational guides, facilitators, and
co-learners.
