Frog Dissection Pre-lab

Directions: Search American Bullfrog and find the answers to help us prepare for dissection on
Friday.

1. Kingdom __Animalia__
2. Phylum_Chordata_
3. SubPhylum _Vertebrae_
4. Classification_Amphibians_

5. Why are frogs said to have two lives? Amphibians are said to have 2 lives - land and water.
Frogs are amphibians

6. How are amphibians different from reptiles? Reptiles include alligators, crocodiles, turtles, and
snakes. Amphibians include salamanders, toads, and frogs.

7. What are 3 adaptations that frogs have that make them amphibians? 1 is cold blooded, 2 is
They respire both by Skin and lungs, 3 is they lay eggs in water ; they have a 3 chambered heart.

8. List two ways in which tadpoles (immature frogs) and frogs differ from each other? Frogs can
hop on land but tadpoles cant because the can only swim in water. They have fins to help them swim
but frogs have feet and arms.

External Anatomy
9. Dorsal means?
of, on, or relating to the upper side or back of an animal, plant, or organ
10. Ventral means?
of, on, or relating to the underside of an animal or plant; abdominal
11. Anterior means?
nearer the front, especially situated in the front of the body or nearer to the head
12. Posterior means?
further back in position; of or nearer the rear or hind end, especially of the body or a part of it
13. Head means?
the upper part of the human body, or the front or upper part of the body of an animal, typically separated
from the rest of the body by a neck, and containing the brain, mouth, and sense organs
14. Torso means?
the trunk of the human body
15. Frog lungs are poorly developed. How does this relate to their skin being thin and moist? T he
thin membranous skin is allows the respiratory gases to readily diffuse directly down their gradients
between the blood vessels and the surroundings. When the frog is out of the water, mucus glands in the s kin
keep the frog moist, which helps absorb dissolved oxygen from the air

16. Name 2 ways forelimbs are different than hind limbs.

1. hind limes tend to be sturdier, stronger and longer
2. the hind limbs are more firmly attached to the spine
Critical Thinking Questions
17. Frogs produce a huge number of babies at one time WHY do you think this is (HINT: Finding
Nemo)?
Because they are to close to the bottom of the food chain.in order for the survival of the species, when they
reproduce, they do so in the millions so only a few of the progeny will be bound survive sometimes

18. The frogs tongue is anchored in the very front opposite to the orientation and anchoring of
humans. Why do you think this is so

Very simple if you think about it really, its anchored to the front of the mouth so it can
kind of throw its tongue out to catch insects
