Candidate: Alina Sturgis Date: 2-6-17

Content Area: Math Grade Level: 8

Subject Matter: Exponents

Lesson Content Description:

Multiplication Properties of Exponents

Instructional Strategies/Method of Delivery:

Common Core Standard:

CCSS.Math.Content.8.EE.A.1
Know and apply the properties of integer exponents to generate equivalent numerical
expressions. For example, 32 3-5 = 3-3 = 1/33 = 1/27.
ELD Standard: Collaborative: Expanding
1. Exchanging information/ideas
Contribute to class, group, and partner
discussions by following turn-taking rules,
asking relevant questions, affirming others, adding relevant information, and paraphrasing
key ideas.
Common Core Lesson Objective:
The students will be able to complete their ticket out the door by describing the rule and
using their notes and Exponent Rules Book to simplify the expression.

Assessment:
Formative: Guided practice, white boards, and walking around the room

Summative: Exit ticket

Lesson/Assessment Modifications: ELL: Special Needs

-Focus on vocabulary
-extra set of notes if necessary
-allow for collaboration on ticket out the door
Technology: Describe the types of technology you will be utilizing in your lesson to create
and enhance instruction
If no technology is used, please explain why.
Khan academy video will be used to wrap up the lesson

LESSON PRESENTATION

INTO

Step-by-Step Anticipatory Set/Orientation

What do you know about exponents?
Show quick example of how exponents are related to multiplication
Short term goal: to learn and recognize the rule
Long term goal: use the rules to solve more complex problems such as exponential
growth

THROUGH

Step-by-Step Modeling/Presentation of the Objective

Introduce lesson and objective

Show an example of product of powers/ introduce rule
Show example of power of powers/ introduce rule
Show example of power of product

Step-by-Step Guided/Structured Practice of the Objective: Gradual Release of

Instruction
Guided practice problem of product of powers
Guided practice problem of power of powers

Checking for Understanding/Formative Assessment of Each Students

Performance/Closure of Instruction
White board practice (2-3 problems)

*students have their exponent rules book notes to reference

BEYOND

Independent Practice/Summative Assessment of Each Students Performance

Final Closure of Lesson: Closure question to reinforce instruction learned
