Title : Bacolod Dog School: Positive Reinforcement in Dog Behavior and Training

Problem Situationer

In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of household that own pets,

most especially dogs. Owning a dog is not just a privilege-it's a responsibility. According to

Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), before owning a pet, one should always consider if

one has the capacity-time wise, financially, emotionally; to care for it responsibly for its entire

lifetime. The animals must be provided with shelter, exercise, care, food and water appropriate

to their physiological and behavioral needs. If one cannot guarantee to assume and provide all

responsibilities of pet ownership for the entire life of the pet, it is more responsible not to acquire

or bring home a pet into the home in the first place. A responsible pet owner would abide by the

responsibilities of a pet owner under RA9482 The Anti Rabies Act and not allow their dogs to

roam freely in public (this includes the outside of their gate or property). He/she would use a

leash to take their dogs out for a walk or when they are out in the streets, parks, malls and other

public areas.

Even though responsible owners are doing their job as they take care of their dogs, it is

sometimes inevitable that dogs can be out of control and become aggressive most especially

around strangers. In fact, World Health Organization (WHO) named the Philippines as one of the

high-risk countries for rabies. The Department of Health (DOH) said an average of 250-300

Filipinos die of rabies yearly and around 200 cases of animal bites are reported daily. Regarding

this issue, it calls for a pressing action not to just minimize but totally eradicate rabies cases in

the Philippines. Further, to effectively eliminate rabies, it is important for pet owners to be

responsible by submitting the animals to vaccination and by making sure that they are taken care
of properly. In conjunction with that matter, canine and their companions are increasingly being

considered as valid subjects for studies intended to improve quality of life for dogs and their

humans.

As per inquiry, according to Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO), there is a 231,395 dog

population in the province as of September 29, 2015. Due to the large number of dog population

in the province and the sparse dog training centers, the researchers have come up with a study

regarding the likelihood of establishing a dog school that promotes positive reinforcement in dog

behavior and training. It does not only provide extensive trainings to dogs and owners but it also

offers a place where you can leave your dogs for pampering. It is furthermore directed towards

building or strengthening a close, healthy and appropriate relationship between the owner and the

dog. The school also aims to open up a clear line of communication, lay down a set of rules and

boundaries which educates the dog to become a responsible member of society and establishes

the groundwork which assists in preventing the development of unacceptable problem behavior.

Research Objectives

This study will look into the viability of the proposed project, a center for people who

experience stress. Moreover, this study will answer the following questions:

a. What type of business will the proposed venture be and how will it be managed?
b. How will the trainings and other services be conducted?
c. Is there a demand for the service? Who are your potential markets? Who else is

offering similar services?

d. How profitable and sustainable the proposed venture be? Is expansion and future

growth probable?
e. How can it be favorable for the society as a whole?
f. What are the environmental considerations that should be taken into account?
Justification of the Study

The proponent believes that the study may be significant to the following entities and

persons:

Pet Owners. Findings of this study will enable the pet owners of Bacolod City to

have ample knowledge on how they can become responsible pet owners and be well-

informed on how to strengthen their relationship to their pets. Further, this will help them

circumvent unnecessary incidents that may jeopardize their welfare.

Community. This study is an eye opener to the community for it will provide

them awareness about the needed actions in dealing with pets in their vicinity.

Bacolod City Government. The outcome of this research endeavor will widen

the knowledge of the government officials and other authorities and inculcate them on

how they can easily foster the idea of administering a better society through promoting

responsible pet ownership and further advocate the importance of pets in the society.

Department of Health. The end product of this study is intended to provide a

good impression to the authorities that they may take into consideration such concerns in

improving the well-being of the citizens together with the pets that they live with and a

further understanding of the better facets of animal treatment that would better

accommodate the thought of adopting a pet.

Researchers of the Study. The results of this study could help the researchers to

be knowledgeable about dog behavior and training and its importance to the society as a

whole. This study could also help them familiarize the processes and procedures in
conducting such activity and will give information, if ever they own pets to apply such

knowledge in more efficient and effective manner.

Future Researchers. Understandings from this research will serve as a

foundation and compendium to researchers who plan to engage in the same study.

Expected Results

The outcome per se of this study will authenticate the feasibility of the aforethought

business enterprise. Details of the proposed dog school will be featured in this study. This may

also be a ground for a starting point should anyone plans to materialize such business.
