Game Setup
1. Players should choose pawns with starting positions that are opposite each
other on the game board. (See Example Starting Positions)
2. After colors have been selected, each player will place their pawn on the
home space of the same color.
3. Each player receives a set of hexagon tiles, in a color that matches their
pawn, which can be placed in front of the player (off the game board).
4. Shuffle the deck of Action Cards and place them face down to the side of the
game board. Deal each player 3 cards faced down. Players may look at their
cards.
Example Starting Positions

2 Players 3 Players 4 Players 5 Players 6 Players

Gameplay
Deciding Who Goes First
Any of the players may roll one battle die and roll to see who goes first. The color
rolled is the player who goes first. If the color does not match any of the players,
the next clockwise player on the board goes first. For example, Blue would be the
next clockwise player if Yellow was rolled but not playing.

Taking a Turn
A players turn consists of 3 distinct phases: clear, control and claim (see Phase
Details). If possible, a player must complete each phase. For example, on the first
turn, a player will not be able to complete the clear and control phases because
they do not yet have any hexagon tiles on the board.

Winning
The game is won when a player reaches a target score agreed upon at the
beginning of the game. The following target scores will typically result in a 45-60
minute game: 2-3 players = 100 pts, 4-5 players = 75 pts and 6 players = 50 pts.

Phases of a Turn

control position. Score points
equal to each newly controlled
space.

Turn Phase 1: Clear

Remove all hexagon tiles you have on the board that are in the control position.

Turn Phase 2: Control

Convert all of your claimed spaces into controlled spaces by flipping your tiles on
the game board to the control position (darker side up). Spaces that you control
may be entered by you, but not another player.

Each time you control a space, you collect the number of points indicated by the
space on the game board.

Turn Phase 3: Claim

Option A: Family Game
Roll the movement die to determine how many spaces you must move your
pawn. This option adds an element of chance to the game and is typically
preferred in family games.

Option B: Strategy Game

Forego the movement die and all players move exactly 3 spaces each turn.
This option reduces the amount of chance in the game and is the preferred
way to play for most gamers. +1 and -1 action cards will not apply to this
movement as a die was not rolled and those cards only affect die rolls.

If possible, you must move your pawn the full amount of your movement. For
each space entered by your pawn, place one hexagon tile in the space showing
the claim side (lighter side up). You may enter spaces that you control but cannot

Stratagem Print & Play - Prototype v0.8 - April 2014

backtrack onto a space you claimed during this movement.

You may claim a space that is already claimed by another player. Simply remove
the other players hexagon tile from the board and place your hexagon tile in its
place with the claim side up.

If you enter a space occupied by another players pawn, your movement stops
there and you must engage that player in battle (see Battling). If you lose the
battle, return your pawn home and your turn ends. If you win the battle and have
movements left you may now take them, including engaging in more battles.

Battling
When a player enters a space occupied by another player, all movement stops
there and the players engage in battle. Each player in the battle rolls 1 battle die.
The higher roll wins and a tie goes to the player defending the space. The winning
player gets to claim the space with their tile. The losing player returns their pawn to
its home space.

Action Cards
If none of the players have played before,
you are encouraged to play a few times
before including the action cards to get
acquainted with the basic game mechanics.

Each player starts the game with 3 action

cards but, may hold more than 3 during the
course of the game.

Action cards may be picked up during the game by controlling the , the
or any of the spaces on the game board marked with the symbol.

If a player controls multiple card awarding spaces in the same turn, they may draw
multiple cards but only up to their hand limit of 5 cards.

On each players turn, all players are allowed to play one card from their hand if
they wish. The bottom of each card explains when during a players turn the card
may be played. For example, after a die has been rolled or during a claim phase.

Action cards, when played, are discarded face up onto a discard pile. If the draw
deck runs out, shuffle the discard pile and place it face down as the new draw pile.

Example Gameplay (using the optional movement die. see Claim phase)
1. Orange, Yellow, Blue and Purple are playing a game. One of the players
rolls the Battle Die to see who goes first. Green is rolled but not playing, so
the starting player is the next clockwise player on the board, Blue.

2. Blue rolls the Movement Die and gets a 4. Since its the first turn, there are
no tiles on the board yet. Therefore, Blue skips the Clear and Control phases
and goes right to the Claim phase, moving their pawn 4 spaces and claiming
each space with a tile (lighter side up). Blue ends their turn.

3. Purple rolls a 2 with the Movement Die and doesnt like their roll, so over-
rides it by playing the Move 4 action card. Purple moves their pawn 4
spaces instead of 2.
4. When claiming spaces, Purple decides to go for one of Blues vulnerable
tiles rather than Battle Blue at the center space. Blues tile is returned and
Purples tile now claims the space. Purple ends their turn.
5. Orange plays a Stratagem card and moves their pawn to the center of the
board where they must Battle Blue for the space.
6. They each roll a Battle die and get the same number. Since Blue is defend-
ing the space, Blue wins on a tie. Purple (who is not in the match) plays a
Rematch! card and the Battle must be fought again.
7. They each roll a Battle die and this time Orange rolls a 4 and Blue rolls a
3, which means Orange wins. Blue plays a +1 card, bringing their defense

value to 4 and tying Orange. Blue now wins because a tie goes to the
defender. Orange must return their pawn to the home space. Yellow is the
only player who hasnt played a card this turn and decides not to. No other
players may play a second card this turn. Orange ends their turn.
8. Yellow rolls the Movement Die and claims 3 spaces. Yellow ends their turn.

9. Blues turn begins and there are 3 surviving tiles on the board in the Claim
position. Blue completes the Control phase by turning the tiles over to the
Control position and scores 13 points.

10. Blue then completes the Claim phase by rolling the Movement Die and
claiming 2 more spaces. Blue ends their turn.
11. Purple, Orange and Yellow perform their turns in order.
12. Blue first completes the Clear phase by removing all tiles in the Control posi-
tion from the board.
13. Blue completes the Control phase by flipping over the 2 remaining tiles to the
Control position and scores 7 points.
14. Finally, Blue completes the Claim phase by rolling the Movement Die and
claiming 3 more spaces. Blue ends their turn.
15. Gameplay continues with each player completing each of the Clear, Control
and Claim phases per turn, if possible, until one of the players reaches 75
points (the recommended target score for a 4 player game).

Variant Rules
The following variant rules are included to help you fine tune Stratagem to
better meet your gaming preferences. These rules help to make the game more
challenging by reducing, and even eliminating, the luck components. Be sure to let
players know your interest in using any of these rules before you start the game.

Finish the Round

Rather than end the game as soon as the first person reaches the target score,
play out the round until each player has taken the same number of turns.

Two Player Variant

In a two player game, each player chooses two colors that are opposites on the
game board. For example, player one would pick Blue and Orange and player
two would pick Red and Green.
Players take turns as if they were playing the colors individually, but maintain one
combined score. For example, if Blue went first, Red would go second, then
Orange, then Green. Players start the game with one hand of three cards but
may play a card on each of their colors turns.

Adjacent Spaces Increase Attack/Defend Value

In addition to rolling the Battle Dice in a battle, players add up the tiles touching
the space the battle is fought in. Each adjacent claimed space is worth one
point and adjacent controlled space is worth two points. The space the defender
is in is also counted. A tie still goes to the defender. The +1 Card and -1 Card
may still apply.

No Battle Dice
If this rule is played then the Adjacent Spaces Increase Attack/Defend Value
rule must also be played, except that no battle dice are used in the game. The
+1 and -1 cards will no longer appy.

Pure Strategy
Play No Battle Die rules and remove the Action Card deck from the game. This
removes all luck components. Players decide who goes first.
