Power and Authority Mini-Project What are the rules?

In every book we are reading, there are issues of power and authority.
You will explore and present on these issues in this mini-project.
PART ONE: Discuss each of the following questions. (Use your warm-up as a guide)
1. Who has power in this society? How do they get it?
2. Who does not have power in this society? Why not?
3. In order to keep their power/authority, what official laws and/or understood rules do people have to
follow? Are these explicitly stated or do the characters have to figure them out?
4. What are the consequences for breaking these rules/laws? Give some examples from your book.

PART TWO: Design a presentation for the class to teach us about the laws/rules of your society. Your
presentation must include at least 5 rules and what the consequences are for breaking these rules. You must
present this information in a creative way that includes everyone. You must include at least three pieces of
directly quoted evidence to support your rules or consequences within your presentation, be creative.
Some options:
Skit-style, where a narrator reads a rule and group members act it out
Animation-style, where group members take turns presenting illustrations of the rules on the overhead
Poetry-style, where group members compose and perform a poem in the style of Welcome to Society
Speech-style, where group members compose and present a constitution to the class, like here are the
rules and consequences of our society
????-style. Bonus points for creativity

You will have the rest of today to prepare this project and rehearse your presentation.
Then you will present _______________________ See rubric below.

Individual Analysis of Power
Directions: Explain two laws/rules of your society and the consequences of breaking those laws/rules. Think back to our
notes about power and who has the power. Think about what is the underlying value of this rule/law, its intended effect
on society, then evaluate whether or not you agree with law/rule, think about if the intended effect happened the way it
was supposed to or not.

this rule/law, explain.

Step Two

Directions: Think about the laws/rules and consequences you have just analyzed and develop a meaningful level 3
question to pose to your group to get them thinking about this society and how the power is structured. Answer the
question yourself with at least one piece of textual evidence to support your reasoning. (Reference your power and
authority notes)
