Pipe Supports in 2016

This tutorial will demonstrate how to use the Specification Editor to create a new Pipe Support Catalog and a
new Pipe Support Library. The tutorial will also demonstrate how to create components using manufacturer
supplied model files. Also included in the tutorial, we will learn how to create Pipe Support Assemblies,
incorporate structural steel in supports, as well as design deliverables that can include the Bill of Materials.

Create a New Catalog

In this exercise we will create a Pipe Support Catalog from the existing out of the box Pipe supports.

1. Open the Specification Editor. Select the Start menu under CADWorx 2016 > Specification Editor >
CADWorx Specification Editor 2016 or by double clicking the shortcut on the desktop.

Note: If the Shortcut is not on the desktop go to the start menu and right click on the CADWorx
Specification Editor 2016 icon and select Send to > Desktop (Create Shortcut).

2. Select the Spec Editor Icon in the top/left corner of the Specification Editor and then select New
Catalog.

March 4, 2016 2
CADWorx Plant Professional: Pipe Support Assemblies Tutorial

3. This will open the New Catalog dialog window. Fill in the Name and Description as shown below and
set the Type to Industry Catalog. Then select OK.

4. Select OK when prompted.

5. This now has created an Empty Base Catalog for the Pipe Supports. There will need to be a size
table created before any pipe support components can be added. Select the Size Table Icon from the
Home Ribbon. This will open the New Size Table dialog window.

Alternately, the size table can be created form the Catalog Data window. Simply Right click on the
Size Tables Folder and select Add Size Table.

March 4, 2016 3
CADWorx Plant Professional: Pipe Support Assemblies Tutorial

6. Fill in the Name and Description as shown below.

7. Notice that there are no sizes in the Size Table. These sizes can be added by Right Clicking in the
Size Table window and selecting Add Standard Size.

8. For this exercise we will create the size table for all sizes. In the Select size from template dialog
window, check the box Select/deselect all. This will select all of the sizes in the template. Then
select OK.
Note: All sizes may not be needed, if certain sizes are not needed, simply check only the boxes of the
sizes that are required. Also, it may be easier/quicker to select all of the sizes and then deselect the
sizes not needed.

9. Save the Pipe_Support_Catalog.ids.

Transferring Catalog Data

In this exercise we will go over transferring data tables from one catalog to another. CADWorx 2016 comes
with plenty of out of the box examples. This data can be transferred from one of the out of the box examples
into the catalog being created. Even existing Size Tables can be transferred.

1. Since this will be a support catalog, all of the piping components will not be needed. Only the existing
pipe supports will need to be transferred into this catalog. Select the Catalog Data icon from the
Transfer Data section on the Home Ribbon.

2. This will open the Transfer Catalog Data dialog window. There will be a message that pops up, select
Yes. This will set this catalog as the Target catalog.

3. Click on the Browse icon next to the Source field. Browse to C:\CADWorx 2016\Plant\Spec and select
the inch_catalog.cat file

4. Now the Target and Source catalogs are set. Expand the Data Tables folder in the source window by
clicking on the plus sign (+) next to the Data Tables folder. Locate the Pipesupport category in the
data table folder and drag and drop it from the source window into the Target window. To do this, click
and hold on the Pipesupport category in the Source window and drag it into the Target window and
drop it in.

5. A message will open. Select No. The Pipe Supports from the source catalog is referencing a different
size table than the one in this catalog. It is stating that there are some differences between the two
size tables. What is happening is, the source size table has some different part numbers than the one
in the target catalog. This is not an issue, but we do not need to transfer all of the data from the Size
Table.
Note: If Yes was selected, there would be an additional size table created. There would be two size
tables in the Target catalog.

March 4, 2016 5
CADWorx Plant Professional: Pipe Support Assemblies Tutorial

6. The Pipe Supports can now be seen in the Target catalog window. Select Save then Close.

7. The Pipe Support Data has now been added to the Pipe_Support_Catalog.ids.

8. Save the Pipe_Support_Catalog.ids.

Creating Pipe Supports

Many times, the out of the box data is a good reference to start building the catalog. There can be instances
where the dimensional data is close, but not exactly what it needs to be. This exercise we will discover how to
create custom support from scratch, and from the existing data in the catalog.

Creating a Support from Scratch

1. Open the Pipe_Support_Catalog.ids file. Expand the Data Tables folder and then the Pipesupport.
Right Click on Pipesupport and select Add Data Table.

2. The New Data Table dialog window will open. Fill in the Name and Description and set the Type and
Size Table as shown below then select OK.

3. The Vendor Shoe has now been created and opened. Right Click in the Vendor Shoe window and
select Add MAINSIZE. Check the boxes for the sizes; 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12. Click OK.

March 4, 2016 7
CADWorx Plant Professional: Pipe Support Assemblies Tutorial

4. The sizes selected have now been added to the Vendor Shoe data table. Fill in the data as shown
below.

Leave the rest of the fields blank.

5. The new data table for the client specific shoe has been added to the catalog. Save the Catalog file.

Creating Pipe Support from Existing Data Tables

1. Open the Pipe_Support_Catalog.ids file. Expand the Data Tables folder and then the Pipesupport
data tables. Expand the Saddle type support and right click on the Saddle 1 I_sup support and then
select Copy.

2. This will create a copy of the Saddle1 I_sup data table. Select the Copy of Saddle1 I_sup. In the
Properties dialog window under Component Table, edit the Name to Vendor Saddle and the
description to Vendor Specific Saddle. This will change the name of the data table in the Catalog Data
window.

March 4, 2016 8
CADWorx Plant Professional: Pipe Support Assemblies Tutorial

3. Open the Vendor Saddle data table. All of the sizes will be listed. Not all of these sizes are needed for
this support component. The sizes are that not needed are, 0.125 0.375 and 14 64. They can
be removed from the data table. Select the 0.125 size, hold down the Shift key and then select
0.375. These sizes will now be highlighted. Right click on them and select Remove Row.

4. There will be a dialog window that will open. Select OK. This is just asking if the selected rows should
be removed.

Remove the sizes 14 64.

5. In the Vendor Saddle data table edit the data to match the image below.

March 4, 2016 9

Pipe Support Library

In previous versions of CADWorx, the Pipe Supports were included with the Catalog and PRJ. This is still
possible in the CADWorx Specification Editor 2016. However, you also have the ability to create a separate
Pipe Support Library (*.psl). This will allow the user to have separate files for supports and piping
components. In this exercise, we will be creating a separate pipe support library and tie it to the PRJ file.

Creating the Pipe Support Library

1. Open the CADWorx Specification Editor 2016.

2. Select the Spec Editor icon in the top/left corner of the Specification Editor and then select New Pipe
Support Libraries.

3. This will open the New Pipe Support Libraries dialog window. Fill in the Name and Description as
shown below. Click on the Browse button next to the Default Catalog box. Browse to C:\CADWorx
2016\Plant\Spec and select the Pipe_Support_Catalog.ids. This will set the default pipe support
catalog that was created in the previous exercises. Make sure that the Location is set to C:\CADWorx
2016\Plant\Spec as well. If not click on the Browse button next to the Location box and map to the
Spec folder. Once it is set, select the OK button.

March 4, 2016 11
CADWorx Plant Professional: Pipe Support Assemblies Tutorial

4. The Pipe Support Library has now been created and the Pipe Support Library is empty. In the Home
ribbon under Pipe Support, click on the Add Pipe Support Library. This will open the New Pipe
Support Library dialog window.

5. Set the Name and description as shown below. The Catalog should already be mapped to the default
catalog since it was set when the PSL was created. The Size Table will need to be set. Click on Arrow
in the drop down menu and set the Size Table to SIZE. This should be the only Size table in the drop
down menu. Then click OK.

6. Now that the client pipe support library has been created, the vendor supports that were created can
be added to this library. Right click on the Client PSL and select Add Group Pipe Support Assembly.

7. This will open the Add Group Pipe Support Assembly dialog window. Fill in the Group Name and
description as shown below. Then click OK.

March 4, 2016 12
CADWorx Plant Professional: Pipe Support Assemblies Tutorial

8. The Pipe Shoe group has now been added to the Client PSL. Create another pipe support group
called Pipe Saddle. Set the description to Pipe Saddle also. The two groups should be shown in the
Pipe Support Library under Client PSL.

9. Now the vendor supports can be added. Right click on the Pipe Shoe folder and select Add Pipe
Support Assembly.

10. The New Pipe Support Assembly will open. Change the Assembly Name to Shoe1.

11. In the Components Available pull down, select Pipe Shoe. The Vendor Shoe that was created will
populate in the list. Select the Vendor Shoe and then click on the arrow pointing to the right. This will
add the Vendor Shoe to the Components Selected list.

12. In the Description section, edit the Long description by opening up the Format button. This will open
the Pipe Support Long Description Format dialog window. Click on the pull down menu and select
Pipe Support Assembly Tables.

13. Select the DESC_PSA_TBL from the available table fields and then select the arrow pointing to the
right. This will add it to the Long Desc Format side. Then Select OK.

March 4, 2016 13
CADWorx Plant Professional: Pipe Support Assemblies Tutorial

14. Click on Add in the upper right corner. The Shoe1 New Pipe Assembly will look like the image below.

15. The support has now been added to the Library. Double Click on the [0] Vendor Shoe support.

16. In the Description field, select the format button to edit the long description.

17. The Long Description Format dialog window will open. Select Pipe Support Component Tables from
the pull down menu.

March 4, 2016 14

18. Select the DESC_PSC_TBL from the Table Fields and then select the arrow pointing to the right.
Then select OK.

19. The DESC_PSC_TBL has been added to the Long description. Select the Apply button in the
upper/right corner.

20. Create the Vendor Saddle in the Pipe Saddle folder. The Assembly Name should be Saddle1 and the
Vendor Saddle will be in the Saddle group under Components Available. Also set the Long
description to DESC_PSA_TBL.

21. Double click on the [0] Vendor Saddle support.

22. Set the long description to DESC_PSC_TBL then select on the Apply.

23. Save the PSL file.

March 4, 2016 15

Transferring Pipe Support Library Data

1. Another option for creating a pipe support library is to transfer data from a previous or current version
of the spec. Since this is the only a pipe support library, there will not be any piping components in the
PSL. The out of the box support library can be transferred into this PSL. In the Home ribbon under the
Transfer Data section, select Support Data.

2. This will open the Transfer Pipe Support Data dialog window. There will be a message that pops up,
select Yes. This will set the PSL being created as the Target PSL.

3. Click on the Browse icon next to the Source box. Set the File type to PRJ. Since this is the first PSL,
there will not be any other PSL files to transfer from. Browse to C:\CADWorx 2016\Plant\Spec and
select the Inch_Specs.prj file.

March 4, 2016 16
CADWorx Plant Professional: Pipe Support Assemblies Tutorial

4. Now the Target and Source files are set. Expand the Inch_Specs.prj by clicking on the plus sign (+)
next to the Inch_Specs.prj. Drag and drop the _Sample I (English/Inch) from the source window into
the Target window. To do this, click and hold on the _Sample I (English/Inch) library and drag it into
the Source window and drop it in.

Note: Only the pipe supports components are listed in the source window. The piping
components that reside in the source PRJ are not shown because this is a PSL file.

5. The Pipe Supports can now be seen in the Target catalog window. Select Save then Close. If a
message opens about updating the project from the base catalog, select Yes.

6. The name of the library that was imported can be changed. Select the support library Sample I and
change the name in the properties window from _Sample I to TestSample.

7. Save the PSL.

8. In the Tutorial Files supplied for training, there will be the Tutorial_Inch_Catalog.cat and
Tutorial_Inch_Specs.prj files. Copy these two files to the C:\CADWorx 2016\Plant\Spec folder.

9. Once they are copied, open the Tutorial_Inch_Specs.prj.

10. Select the Tutorial_Inch_Specs in the Project Specs window. In the properties window there is the
Pipe Support Libraries Path. Browse to the Pipe_Support_Libraries.psl file. This will reference the
Pipe Support Library that was created to this PRJ.

March 4, 2016 17
CADWorx Plant Professional: Pipe Support Assemblies Tutorial

11. Save the Tutorial_Inch_Specs.prj.

March 4, 2016 18

Placing the Supports

For this exercise we will place the vendor pipe shoe and saddle as well as the out of the box pipe shoe and
saddle. We will see the differences between the out of the box supports and the support that were created in
the Client PSL.

1. Open CADWorx Plant Professional 2016.

2. Then open the Shoe_SaddleTutorial.dwg. There will be two pipes in this model.

3. If the Tutorial_Inch_Specs.prj is not loaded, click on the Set Specification and Size icon in the
CADWorx Spec View Palette.

March 4, 2016 19
CADWorx Plant Professional: Pipe Support Assemblies Tutorial

4. Browse to the Tutorial_Inch_Specs.prj. Then click on OK.

5. Select the Pipe Support Modeler icon from the CADWorx Plant I ribbon in the Palettes section.

March 4, 2016 20
CADWorx Plant Professional: Pipe Support Assemblies Tutorial

6. The CADWorx Pipe Support View Palette will open.

7. Since the Client PSL is first in the list of pipe support libraries, it will be set to that pipe support library.
Select the down arrow on the Client PSL and then select the TestSample support library.

8. Expand the Pipe Support folder and select the Pipe Shoe support.

9. Select a point on the 4-Shoe pipe and place the shoe 10 from the left end of the pipe. Then pick the
in the direction below the pipe).

10. The support will turn Red. In the command line CADWorx is asking about the line number. Press
Enter. This will give the pipe support the same line number as the pipe line.

March 4, 2016 21
CADWorx Plant Professional: Pipe Support Assemblies Tutorial

11. Place the Saddle 1 support on the 4-Saddle pipe. Place it 36 from the left end of the pipe.

12. In the CADWorx Pipe Support View palette, set the support library to the Client PSL and expand the
Pipe Shoe and Pipe Saddle folders.

13. Select the Shoe1 support and place it 24 from the left end of the pipe. Press Enter for the line
number.

14. Select the Saddle1 support and place it 40 from the left end of the pipe. Press Enter for the line
number.

15. The model should look like this.

March 4, 2016 22
CADWorx Plant Professional: Pipe Support Assemblies Tutorial

Notice the differences in the supports. That is because the Client PSL supports that were added have
different dimensional data.

16. Save and exit out of the Shoe_SaddleTutorial.dwg.

Creating Custom Supports with Vendor Drawing Files

Some pipe support vendors supply their own DWG files for their supports. CADWorx has the ability to use
those DWG files for the supports. This is similar to a user shape for piping components. This exercise will go
over the proper steps to creating vendor specific support data in the catalog with the vendor DWG files.

1. The Vendor_Files folder supplied with the training material contains the Vendor supplied DWG files.
They are the components for the pipe supports. Copy the Vendor_Files folders from the training
material to the C:\CADWorx 2016\Plant\Spec folder.

2. Open the CADWorx Specification Editor and open the Pipe_Support_Catalog.ids and expand the
Data Tables folder and the PipeSupport type.

3. Right click on the Custom support type and select Add Data Table.

4. The New Data Table dialog window will open. The first Vendor support component to be added is the
Vendor Specific Pipe Clamp. In the Name field, type in Pipe Clamp. In the Description field type in
Vendor Specific Pipe Clamp. See image below.

5. The Pipe Clamp data table has now been added to the Custom Type Support. In the Vendor_Files
folder there is a Pipe Clamp DWG. That DWG is Pipe_Clamp_4.dwg. It is a pipe clamp for a 4 pipe.
(This is the only clamp that was supplied) Right click in the Pipe Clamp data table and select Add
MAINSIZE. Check the box for 4 only. Then click OK.

March 4, 2016 24
CADWorx Plant Professional: Pipe Support Assemblies Tutorial

6. The 4 size has been added to the data table. All of the fields are blank though. These fields will need
to be populated.

7. Key in the corresponding fields;

SUBDIRECTORY - Vendor_Files
DWGNAME - Pipe_Clamp_4.dwg
SCALE - 1.0000
LENGTH - 0
WEIGHT - 4.6000
USER_PART_NUMBER - (Leave Blank)

Note: The Spec will automatically default to the folder that the Spec is located in. That is why only the
folder was listed for the Custom Pipe Support Subdirectory. If needed, the SUBDIRECTORY location
can be set to the entire path folder on the local machine or a network path.

8. Right click on the Custom Support group and Select, Add Data Table. In the Name field, type in UBolt.
In the Description field type in Vendor Specific U-Bolt. See image below.

March 4, 2016 25
CADWorx Plant Professional: Pipe Support Assemblies Tutorial

9. The UBolt data table has now been added to the Custom Type Support. In the Vendor_Files folder
there is a U-Bolt DWG. That DWG is UBolt_4.dwg. It is a U-Bolt for a 4 pipe. (This is the only U-Bolt
that was supplied) Right click in the Pipe Clamp data table and select Add MAINSIZE. Check the box
for 4 only. Then click OK.

March 4, 2016 26

10. The 4 size has been added to the data table. All of the fields are blank though. These fields will need
to be populated.

11. Key in the corresponding fields;

SUBDIRECTORY - Vendor_Files
DWGNAME - UBolt_4.dwg
SCALE - 1.0000
LENGTH - 0
WEIGHT - 0.9000
USER_PART_NUMBER - (Leave Blank)

12. Next, add the Welded Beam Attachment. Since this is still a Vendors file, it will be in the Custom type
pipe support also. The welded beam attachment is based off of the rod size. These files begin with
the name WBeamAtt_***. The *** is for the Rod Size and there is a file for each welded beam
attachment based on the rod size. Right click on the Custom support type and select Add Data Table.

13. Fill in the information as shown below. Then click OK.

14. Since the support component is based off of the rod size, some of the sizes do not show up in the
Select Size dialog window. These sizes will have to be added differently. Right click in the data table
and select Add New MAINSIZE. Key in 0.3750 for the 3/8 rod.

March 4, 2016 27
CADWorx Plant Professional: Pipe Support Assemblies Tutorial

15. Do the same for the following sizes:

0.5000 2.7500
0.6250 3.0000
0.7500 3.2500
0.8750 3.5000
1.0000 3.7500
1.2500 4.0000
1.5000 4.2500
1.7500 4.5000
2.0000 4.7500
2.2500 5.0000

March 4, 2016 41
CADWorx Plant Professional: Pipe Support Assemblies Tutorial

12. The CADWorx Pipe Support View Palette will open.

13. Before the support is created we will discuss the Attach To, Connect To, as well as the Direction
Alignment and Vector Alignment.

Pipe
[Attach To: Pipe] is used for connection points which will place onto the pipe. There should only be
one Pipe attachment point per pipe support assembly.

Direction Vector: The direction vector for connection points attached to [Pipe] should be set in the
direction which will align with the support insertion direction. For example, when you start a new
hanger assembly, you will select an insertion point and subsequently will select an insertion direction.
The insertion direction you select will typically be up for the hanger because on placement you will
want the hanger to place upward.

March 4, 2016 42
CADWorx Plant Professional: Pipe Support Assemblies Tutorial

Lets say the first component in the hanger assembly will be a clamp. The direction for the connection
point of the clamp connecting to the Pipe will be the direction of the clamp to line up with above
placement direction (i.e. which direction on the clamp will point up).

Alignment Vector: The alignment vector for connection points attached to Pipe should be set in the
direction which will align with centerline of the Pipe. The alignment vector for the above clamp
example will point out from the eye of the clamp, thats where the pipe centerline will run.

March 4, 2016 43
CADWorx Plant Professional: Pipe Support Assemblies Tutorial

The resulting clamp arrangement with above direction and alignment vectors is as follows:

Other
[Attach To: Other] is used for pipe support component to pipe support component connection points
(within the pipe support assembly).

Direction Vector: The direction vector for connection points attached to [Other] should be set in the
direction toward the connected component. To continue the above hanger example, we will connect a
Weldless Eye Nut to the top Clamp bolt. Hence the Clamp will need a connection point at the bolt
location to which the Weldless Eye Nut will attach. The direction vector for that connection point at the
clamp bolt location will point up, in the direction of the Weldless Eye Nut.

March 4, 2016 44
CADWorx Plant Professional: Pipe Support Assemblies Tutorial

Alignment Vector: The alignment vector can be specified in any direction perpendicular to the
direction vector. Whichever direction chosen for the alignment vector, that will be used to align the
alignment vector of the next adjacent component. A good rule of thumb is to always point the
alignment vector in the direction of the component which will run parallel with the centerline of the
pipe. So for this clamp bolt connection point, we point in the direction of the pipe centerline.

To complete the example, lets add the Weldless Eye Nut. Like above, the connection point on the
Weldless Eye Nut which connects to the clamp will be set in the direction toward the connected
component, shown below.

March 4, 2016 45
CADWorx Plant Professional: Pipe Support Assemblies Tutorial

Since the alignment vector on the clamp for the Weldless Eye Nut connection points alongside the
pipe centerline, we set the alignment vector on the Weldless Eye Nut in the same direction which
should point alongside the pipe centerline, shown below.

March 4, 2016 46
CADWorx Plant Professional: Pipe Support Assemblies Tutorial

The resulting Weldless Eye Nut arrangement with above direction and alignment vectors is as follows:

March 4, 2016 47
CADWorx Plant Professional: Pipe Support Assemblies Tutorial

Steel
[Attach To: Steel] is used for pipe support component to steel connection points. This is used with
Steel Detect.

Direction Vector: The direction vector for connection points attached to [Steel] should be set in the
direction in which Steel Detect should search. In other words, this will be the direction in which the
attachment point makes contact with a steel member. So for a welded attachment (like the welded
beam attachment), the top of the attachment will attach to the bottom of steel, hence the direction
vector of Steel connection point at the top of the welded beam attachment will point outward (up)
toward the steel member it will connect to.

Alignment Vector: The alignment vector for Steel connections can be in any direction as long as it is
perpendicular to the direction vector.

33. The steel angle direction will be the side of the angle the U-Bolt will connect to. In this case, it would
be in the positive Y direction. Select the Direction to below the pipe.

34. For the Alignment Vector, pick a direction that is perpendicular to the Direction. In this case, in line
with the pipe. The select Apply.

March 4, 2016 67
CADWorx Plant Professional: Pipe Support Assemblies Tutorial

35. The orientation of the angle has changed.

36. Now the delta from the origin point (Connection-1 of the U-Bolt) will need to be modified. For this
support, the top of the angle needs to be above the pipe and the center of the U-Bolt should be in the
middle of the angle leg. Then in the X field, key in PIPEOD/2+3 and the Y field will stay at 0. (The Y
direction of this support connection would shift the angle away from the pipe. The angle needs to be
flush against the pipe.) Set the Z field to LEG1/2. LEG1 is the width of the angle. By setting this field
to LEG1/2, it will utilize the size of the angle to determine the position of the U-Bolt on the angle. Then
select Apply.

37. The Angle has now been moved to the correct location.

38. Select the Add Connection icon. Connection-1 has been added to the list of connections.

March 4, 2016 68

Create Custom Data on Vendor Supports for Assemblies

Custom Data is user defined data that can be assigned to piping and support components. There can be
multiple custom data fields on the components. In CADWorx 2016, Custom Data can be used to define
connection locations for pipe supports assemblies. In this exercise we will discover how to define connection
points on the support components to be used in creating assemblies.

1. Open the CADWorx Specification Editor 2016 and open the Pipe_Support_Catalog.ids.

2. Expand the Data Tables, PipeSupport group, and the Custom support type. Open the UBolt data
table.

3. In the properties window will be the properties that are associated with that component. Near the
bottom will be the Custom Data. Right Click on the Custom Data bar and select Add.

4. The New Field dialog window will open. Fill in the fields as shown below. Then Select OK.

5. Select OK when asked if you want to add the field CONN0.

6. Add a second custom data field and fill in the fields as shown below.

March 4, 2016 101

CADWorx Plant Professional: Pipe Support Assemblies Tutorial

7. The two custom data fields have been added to the UBolt data table. Since the CONN0 connection is
on the pipe, the delta coordinates (0,0,0) will not need to be updated. The CONN1 delta coordinates
will need to be updated. To calculate the delta coordinate use the equation: D-F
For the 4 pipe 4.5 2.25 = 2.25
The delta coordinate from the origin of the UBolt is (0,2.25,0)

8. For the U-Bolts, custom data tables were added individually. Right click on the Custom Support group
and select Add Custom Data to All Tables.

March 4, 2016 102

CADWorx Plant Professional: Pipe Support Assemblies Tutorial

9. Key in the following information and select OK.

10. Select OK when asked if you want to add the field to all tables.

11. All of the tables in the Custom type support are now Bold in text. This is letting you know the Tables
have been modified. Some of the tables will need to be modified though.(In step 19)

12. Open the Pipe Clamp Data Table. Right click on the Custom Data and select Add.

13. In the New Field dialog window, key in the following information. Then select OK.

March 4, 2016 103

CADWorx Plant Professional: Pipe Support Assemblies Tutorial

14. Custom Data CONN1 has been added.

15. The coordinates for both are set to (0,0,0). This will work for CONN0 which connects to the pipe. The
reason this will work for CONN0 is because the origin of the pipe clamp is at the center of the clamp,
which is the center of the pipe.

16. CONN1 will need to be modified to connect to the next component. The connection will be at the
bottom of the bolt at the center of the clamp brackets. (See image above.)

March 4, 2016 104

CADWorx Plant Professional: Pipe Support Assemblies Tutorial

17. If the vendor data sheets are available, they can be used to calculate the delta for the second
connection point.
Example: In the image below, take E - (F/2) = Distance needed.
For the 4 pipe clamp, E=3.5 and F=1/2
3.5-(0.5/2)= 3.25

18. CONN1 coordinate will be (3.25,0,0) Type this into the CONN1 field.

19. Open the weldless eye nut data table. In the custom data CONN0 states it is connected to the pipe.
The weldless eye nut does not connect to the pipe. In the properties window select CONN0. There will
be a box on the end that has three dots in it. Select that box.

20. The Edit Field dialog window will open. Change the description to Connection at Clamp. Then select
OK.

21. The weldless eye nut will have a second connection point. Right click on the custom data field and
select Add. Fill in the fields as shown below. Then select OK.

March 4, 2016 105

CADWorx Plant Professional: Pipe Support Assemblies Tutorial

22. The two custom data fields have been added. The weldless eye nut has the origin of the component
at the center of the radius of the loop. This is not the connection point. To determine this connection
point use this equation: B/2
For the 3/8 rod size, B=1 5/32 so 1.15625/2=0.578125

23. The coordinate for CONN0 on the 3/8 rod size weldless eye nut is (0,-0.578125,0)

March 4, 2016 106

CADWorx Plant Professional: Pipe Support Assemblies Tutorial

24. Use the spreadsheet below to determine the delta for the rest of CONN0 points.

25. CONN1 is located at the opposite end of the opening of the weldless eye nut.

To determine the delta from the origin for this coordinate use the formula (-B/2) + E. The B is negative
since the connection point is in the opposite direction.
Example: For the 3/8 rod size (-1.15625/2) + 1.53125=0.953125
The delta coordinate for the 3/8 rod size at CONN1 is (0,0.953125,0)

26. Using the information above calculate the rest of the CONN1 delta coordinates.

27. Open the welded beam attachment data table and change the description of CONN0 to Connection at
Rod Take Out.

28. The welded beam attachment can be used a couple ways. See images below.

March 4, 2016 107

CADWorx Plant Professional: Pipe Support Assemblies Tutorial

29. Depending on how this is to be used, there will be different connection points. Right click on the
custom data and select Add.

30. Fill in the fields as shown below and select OK.

March 4, 2016 108

CADWorx Plant Professional: Pipe Support Assemblies Tutorial

31. Add two additional fields and fill them in as shown below.

32. To determine the delta of CONN0 from the origin, use the equation (-T) + E + R E
Example: For the 3/8 rod size (-0.25) + 2 + 0.875 1.875 = 0.75
The delta coordinate from the origin of the welded beam attachment is (0,0.75,0)

March 4, 2016 109

CADWorx Plant Professional: Pipe Support Assemblies Tutorial

33. Using the information on the figures and data below, determine the delta coordinate for the rest of
CONN0.

March 4, 2016 110

CADWorx Plant Professional: Pipe Support Assemblies Tutorial

March 4, 2016 111

CADWorx Plant Professional: Pipe Support Assemblies Tutorial

34. To determine the delta of CONN1 from the origin, use the equation (-T) + E (H/2)
For the 3/8 rod size (-0.25) + 2 (0.5625/2) = 1.46875
The delta coordinate from the origin of the welded beam attachment is (0,1.46875,0)

35. Using the information from the figures and data above, determine the delta coordinate for the rest of
CONN1.

36. To determine the delta of CONN2 from the origin, use the equation (-T) + E + R
For the 3/8 rod size (-0.25) + 2 + 0.875 = 2.625
The delta coordinate from the origin of the welded beam attachment is (0,2.625,0)

37. Using the information from the figures and data above, determine the delta coordinate for the rest of
CONN2.

38. To determine the delta of CONN3 from the origin, use the equation (-T)
For the 3/8 rod size the (-0.25)
The delta coordinate from the origin of the welded beam attachment is (0,-0.25,0)

39. Using the information from the figures and data above, determine the delta coordinate for the rest of
CONN3.

40. Save the Pipe_Support_Catalog.ids.

they were placed in the model. Now they will be pre-set.

4. In the Edit Pipe Support Assembly window, select Connection-0. Verify that the Attach To it set to
Other and the Connect To is set to None.

5. The connections will need to near the end of the rod so that the threads will be exposed. In the
Connection Points section, the X and Y fields will remain at 0, but the Z will need to be adjusted. This
can be determined by taking the diameter of the rod times 1.5. Keywords can be used in the
connections for this. In the Z field key in DIAMETER*1.5, then select Apply.

March 4, 2016 113

CADWorx Plant Professional: Pipe Support Assemblies Tutorial

6. Select Connection-1. Verify that the Attach To is set to Other and the Connect To is set to None.

7. In the Connection Points section, the X and Y fields will remain at 0, but the Z field will need to be at
the opposite end of the rod. In the Z field, key in LENGTH-DIAMETER*1.5, then select Apply. This
will set Connection-1 at the opposite end of the rod, but 2 times the diameter into the rod.

8. Double click on the [0] Pipe Clamp support.

9. In the Edit Pipe Support Assembly window, select Connection-0 in the Connections section. Verify
that the connection is attached to the Pipe and then uncheck the Offset to pipe outside diameter box,
if checked.

10. In the Connection Point Section keywords can be used to assign the connections. The custom data
for the connection point that was assigned in the catalog file. The keywords would be {CONN0},
{CONN1}, etc. The Brackets { } will need to be on the connection keywords in order for them to work
properly. The brackets are needed when using a Custom Data field reference containing the position
in the following format, (X,Y,Z).

For Connection-0, set the X, Y, and Z, fields to {CONN0}.

11. The Direction and Alignment fields will be based off of the vendor supplied model. Open CADWorx
Plant Professional and in the Vendor_Files Folder, open the Pipe_Clamp_4.dwg.

March 4, 2016 114

CADWorx Plant Professional: Pipe Support Assemblies Tutorial

12. The X, Y, Z axiss in the file will help determine the direction and alignment. For the clamp, the
direction will be relative to the direction of placement of the support. In this model, that would be in the
positive X (+X) direction. So in the Direction field, key in 1,0,0. The 1 tells CADWorx that it will be in
the positive X direction.

13. For the Alignment, this will have to be perpendicular to the Direction Vector. The best approach for
