7. Please describe any academic or personal barriers and how you have
overcome them. How have they interfered with your academic performance?
a. My years at high school were complicated. I attend San
Diego High, but since we had four small schools my ninth grade year,
my mom placed me at the school of Media, Visual and Performing Arts.
As a child, I wanted to be a singer like my role model Beyonce. However,
I began to realize that my voice was not the best and it is hard to make
it in the industry. I restarted my life plan and decided I wanted to be a
psychologist. Attending Arts meant that the science classes I really
wanted were out of my reach since they were given to the small school
of SciTech. I decided to ask my counselor to transfer to SciTech. He said
it would be wise to stay at Arts since it would be a tough transition and
he promised that the course Psychology would be offered next year. So I
buckled down and decided to stay another year.
Tenth grade year was more frustrating since the classes I was
given were not challenging and it seemed like my education was at a
standstill. To top it off, Psychology was not offered like my counselor had
promised! I again presented him my problem. He begged me to
reconsider and didnt want me to change to SciTech for my eleventh
grade year. So again, I buckled down but decided to bring my case to
the principal instead. Fortunately for me, Arts was given a bombshell
later in the year.
Since our small school was the smallest at our complex, the
district decided to close it down to give the students more educational
opportunities. This also meant that current Arts students could move to
a different school of their choice. I was finally allowed to attend SciTech!
My years at SciTech have been amazing and the counselors that I
have really helped me with my goals towards college. It is sad that it
took a small school to shut down for me to get my way, but it is better
than staying in an environment that would not help me towards my
future.
