BUAD501: Managerial Communication

Dr. Michael Collins

CASE ANALYSIS

Logical Elements in a Case Analysis:

Remember that no case ever contains all the facts. In your writing you
will be using
facts (stated in the case)
reasonable inferences (your reasoning or conclusions based the
facts in the case)
plausible assumptions (your informed speculations supported by
the facts of the case, your business experience, and knowledge
from your business courses)

Note that the three categories range from the most certain and concrete
to the most speculative or abstract.

Directions:
Write 1-2 paragraphs for each step:

STRATEGIC ISSUES AND PROBLEMS

Sketch the relevant background briefly; introduce the players. What
seems to be the problem? Do not repeat or copy case language (you will
lose points if you do).

EVALUATION AND ANALYSIS

Look for conflicts of interest and dilemmas; examine causes and effects
etc. What are the short-term objectives as opposed to the long-term
objectives of the company, for example? How did the facts of the case play
a part in the problem?

ALTERNATIVES
Here you evaluate the options. Write two or more alternative solutions to
the problem and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each.
PLAN OF ACTION
After examining the most logical steps above, you choose the option
which you consider the most feasible one and defend it. Support the best
solution with evidence.
