ALDINGA BAY RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION
Dear Reader, Index
The Christmas and New Year period is over with a multitude of ABRA News / editorial 3
local events and activities concluded, including the Tour Down Art News -
Under and Australia Day Breakfasts, locally.
Auto Section 32 - 35
There is much promise of good things to come as well with the
New Library opening and Youth Centre extending; Aldinga Central CFS Corner 22
Town Square development and Main Street continuing and Campfires & Crows 16
commitment to finally do something about the Port Road - Malpas Church Notices, News 41, 14
Road section of Main South Road.
The local South Road action group is growing in strength and has a Community Centre 39
very laudable aim - to see Main South Road treated like the roads Community News 33 - 36
north of the city with four lanes between Sellicks and Seaford - Community Radio 10
something we definitely need. However I would caution that their
current aim to have the proposed Band Aid measure of Emergency Numbers 38

lanes, stopped in favour of planning for a four lane road, would be Environmental 6, 12, 15, 19, 28
extremely negative to us in the short term. This work has been
planned with money allocated and will be considerably better than Finance 25
the current hellish situation. Health Section 20 - 25
Why cannot it be the start of a new plan to develop the four lane History 26-27
road? The planned roundabout has provision built in to be two lanes
at a later stage. The road build-up earthworks for the second lane Letters -
from the roundabout north to Malpas, likewise, is a step in the right Library 36
direction. Discussion with the planners indicates that all the work

being done is provision for future road duplication. Lets get this
done and continue, in fact increase pressure, to get a proper road On The Green 8
system built to serve this growing area as a follow up. Real Estate 4, 6
There is quite a lot happening from an environmental point of view School News 18
locally as you will see in this issue. Youth Activities -
The balance between conservation and development is a fine one
and one we must be constantly aware of for both our own and our
childrens future.
The washpool and Hooded Plover articles are of specifically local
interest. We have a fairly unique situation here in Aldinga Bay with Where we would we be

measures which will minimise damage to the same environment.
There is no reason people and other forms of nature cant co-exist if
the proper precautions are taken. We can have our lifestyle and still Quote of the month:

LEON

Why risk your life?

Minding his own business in his mid-eastern homeland
Leon (let's call him) was not of a particularly religious
mindset, but if he was going to follow a God it would
have to be the one he found for himself; not one foisted
on him by others.

He had become disillusioned by the spectre of a serious

street crime in the name of religion; and was then soon
surprised when, as he says, "the Holy Spirit touched my
life" (whilst illegally watching a Christian television
program). He was sold and says, "At that very moment I
realised that Jesus was the Son of God and that I was a
believer. I saw kindness and mercy!"

This was in sharp contrast to his later experience of being

beaten in the streets and halls of learning; refused service,
told to leave stores - and regular death threats: "You can
be killed any time. Prepare yourself for it!"

He knew what the risks were before his decision to follow

Trackers
Australian Aboriginals [and the South African Bushman] are

still exist in our remote aboriginal settlements. So ask yourself,
why arent they being utilized throughout the country both in

tracker had been used on the job first thing, the Falconio case
may have been quickly wrapped up. The same goes for the
numerous other cases and particularly those concerning
missing people.
Then theres the other side of the coin. If aboriginal trackers
were attached to various of our regional police stations, there
would be a number of positives. Like footballers and other
aboriginal sportspeople, they would be excellent roll models
for their people. It could also assist police in day to day
dealings with aboriginal people.
You only have to see a good tracker in action to be convinced
of this. I have seen them on a number of occasions, as have
various outback policemen, including Danny Mc Gurgan who
is attached to the Waikerie police. He spent many years
stationed in South Australias Pitjandjara lands, and has many
stories relating to the tracking abilities of these people. If
anyone needs convincing, they should read Tracks by Max
Jones
But having said all this, it will probably never happen. Not
because the expertise doesnt still exist, and cant be passed on
to the next generation, despite the competing activities and
distractions of this Hi tech age. The main obstacle will be the
ever increasing rules and regulations imposed on our long
suffering society, with the excesses of occupational health and
safety leading the charge. The only way these unique and
remarkable skills could be utilized today, would be for them
[the trackers] to operate outside the system in conjunction
with sympathetic police officers with suitable aboriginal and
bush experience. Then it might work. But dont hold your
breath.
Australia is supposed to be the smart country, and if we
truly were, this wonderful expertise would be ongoing,

The Giving Garden began in June 2016 on Evans https://www.facebook.com/SeafordRotarySA/
Street, Aldinga Beach. It has turned a vacant block of
land that was underutilised into a space with fruit treesand
vegetables where many children and families congregate
to collect strawberries and chat.
A Streetscape Grant from the City of Onkaparinga
assisted the group to purchase everything needed. The
garden is alive with seasonal fruit, vegetables and herbs,
encouraging growing, swapping and eating fresh food as
well as connecting with people in the community.
One of the best things about the Giving Garden is
that it's all trial and error, so anyone can have a go. The
group encourages people to plant if they see a free patch,
pick what they want and even pull a weed. Everyone is
welcome to contribute anyway they can.
The group see contribution as a fluid thing so
people help when they can, there is no pressure. People
who have more time up their sleeve are vital too because
they often assist with watering and things that are needed
on a regular basis.
It can be tricky when you are at home cooking a
meal late at night and don't have the herb you need, now
that we have the Giving Garden you can just go down and
take what you need.
The new Rotary Club of Seaford, which has a reach
to Aldinga and Sellicks, heard the news of the garden and
were quick to get on board. They have held a meeting at
the garden and also partnered with Bunnings, Seaford to
very kindly donate and install a water tank. This has
helped in a big way as the garden is now even more
sustainable.
Emily and Paul Tribe, a local family, have fostered
a relationship with Grow Free, a facebook Group. Paul
has made a fantastic cart that will enable people to leave
their own excess fruit and vegetables and swap with the
produce on the cart. Everyone is invited to participate.
The group hold regular working bees, the next one
is scheduled for the 5th of February from 11 - 1 with
lunch included. People of all ages are invited to come
along and hear more about the garden and get their hands
dirty.
Almost every afternoon, after school, the street fills
with the neighbourhood children. Adults chat away with
each other. People now stop and talk or wave when they
drive past. There's a real sense of cohesion in the area.
On the 5th of March the Giving Garden will be
officially launched, the time is yet to be announced. The
group would love to see people. There will be activities

ALDINGA MEDICAL CENTRE IS PLEASED TO ADVISE THAT
OUR NEW REGISTRARS WILL BE COMMENCING PRACTICE
FROM 6th FEBRUARY 2017

DR CYRUS DAVANI
Will be working at Aldinga Medical Centre Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and one Saturday a
month. Cyrus has been working at Tudor Medical Centre prior to commencing his rotation with us. He will be
working with us for at least six months with a possibility of extending his rotation for a further six months.
Cyrus is interested in all aspects of general medicine and is looking forward to meeting our patients.

DR AATHI SELVANAYAGAM
Will be working at Aldinga Medical Centre Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday each week and one
Saturday a month. Aathi is commencing his general practice experience at Aldinga Medical Centre. Aathi
has previously worked as a surgical registrar in Queensland but decided that general practice is the direction
hed like to take for his future. Aathi will be working with us for 6 months from 6th February before he moves
to the Northern Territory for his next placement.

DR REBEKAH WEBB
We are absolutely delighted to welcome Rebekah back to Aldinga Medical Centre. Rebekah has passed her
final exams and is now a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners. Rebekah was also
Registrar of the Year in 2016. Rebekah will be working Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and one
Saturday a month.

DR JOSEPHINE NEWTON
Will be extending her rotation for a couple of months before she leaves us to take up general practice in the
city. We will enjoy having Jose for that extra time as she has been such a valuable part of the team and well
miss her when she leaves.

Sadly we will be saying goodbye to Kirsten Missen and Andrew Davids who will be moving on to their next
rotations to complete their registrar training. Kirsten will be moving to Bayside Medical Centre and Andrew
will be moving to Morphett Vale Family Practice. We have loved having Kirsten and Andrew as part of the
team for the past year and we wish them well with their forthcoming exams and a brilliant future ahead, and,
who knows, we may see them here again in the future.
