Learning Goals

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

recover into a ready position to defend space and receive objects with a scoop
send objects, with a scoop, against a wall with a variety of speeds to cover a variety of distances
demonstrate their understanding of proactive measures to minimize the safety risks while actively
participating in an outdoor activity.

Facility

Walls, Paved area

Safety Requirements

Refer to the Ontario Physical Education Safety Guidelines at safety.ophea.net.

Equipment List

20 30 scoops (1 per student)

20 30 whiffle balls (1 per student)

Warm-Up

Students will gradually increase their heart rate by participating in the following activity.

Safety: Before using the scoops, ensure the following safety considerations are met:

Scoops and scoop balls must be in good condition (e.g., no cracks or chips).
There is to be no intentional contact (e.g., body to body or scoop to body).
Stress the students responsibility to respect individual space.

Move and Pass

Students move around the space, each holding a scoop. Half the students hold a ball in their scoop. Encourage
students to move in their own space and gradually increase their speed as they warm up.
On a signal to pass, students make eye contact or call the name of another student and pass the balls.
Challenge the class to complete the passes as quickly and accurately as possible, then continue moving.

Minds On

Share and clarify the lesson Learning Goals.

Explain to students that they will be applying their sending and receiving skills and tactical solutions while
using scoops. Review the Success Criteria for Active Participation briefly with the students and remind
students to apply the criteria while they are participating.

Review with students the proper technique for sending and receiving with scoops. Have students stand in
their own space in a line or scatter formation and adjust body position according to instruction.

Preparation

Grip scoop handle using the dominant hand.

Have feet shoulder-width apart.
Bend knees with weight equally on the balls of both feet.
Have body facing the wall.

Grade 6 | Defending Space in Net and Wall Games

Sending

Step forward with non-dominant foot, turning body sideways and bringing arm back.
Release the ball from the scoop from over head, underhand or sidearm.
Adjust swing for speed and distance.
Follow through in the direction of the target.

Receiving

Anticipate where ball is going and move body in front of ball.

Hold scoop with opening facing ball.
Bring scoop back to absorb the speed and force of the ball.

Allow students a few minutes to experiment with their scoops against a wall.

A&E - Minds On

Teacher observation with verbal feedback of students ability to apply prior knowledge of sending and
receiving to using scoops and their knowledge and understanding of the Success Criteria for Active
Participation

Action

For the following activities, allow an extra bounce if necessary.

Wall Ball with Scoops

Have students form pairs. One student sends the ball against the wall with a scoop and the other receives
it and sends it back after one bounce. Count how many consecutive throws and catches can be made.
Bring students together for a brief discussion. Ask students what strategies they used to successfully
receive the ball (e.g., returning to a ready position after each throw, watching the throwers body to
predict where the ball may go, holding scoop sideways with opening facing the wall).

Wall Ball with Scoop Drills

Send students back to the wall with a partner. Students work on sending and receiving the ball with the
following drills:

Double Bounce Wall Ball

One student sends the ball to the wall, having it bounce first off the ground, then the wall, then the ground
again before it is received by the other student and sent back in the same way.

Reverse Wall Ball

One student sends the ball to the wall, having it bounce first off the ground, then the wall. The second
student must receive it before it bounces on the ground again.

No Bounce Wall Ball

Students practice sending and receiving the ball with no bounces.

Students who become proficient may vary their distance from the wall or try sending the ball to the right
and to the left to challenge their partners.

Multi-Person Wall Ball with Scoops

Students form groups of 3 5. Each student is given a number, starting at one. Player 1 begins by serving
the ball against the wall. Student 2 must receive the ball after one bounce and send it back against the
wall for Student 3. The students keep sending and receiving the ball in numerical order, counting their
consecutive hits. At the end of each rally, all students put down their scoops and complete one of Opheas
50 Fitness Activities (see Appendix). Vary the rules according to any of the above drills the students have
practiced.

A&E - Action

position using Teacher Resource 2: Sending and Receiving Skills and Strategies Checklist (from Lesson 1)

Teacher observation with anecdotal writing of students ability to use equipment safely and to actively
participate using Teacher Resource 1: Participation/Living Skills Anecdotal Recording Chart (from Lesson 1)

Consolidation

Students gradually decrease their heart rate to a resting rate by participating in the activity below.
Students should also stretch the body parts that have been active throughout the lesson. See Appendix for
stretches.

Students stand in a small circle with team mates and toss the whiffle ball underhand to each other in the
circle. The student with the ball leads a stretch for the others then passes the ball to a new leader. Using
the Think Pair Share Strategy (see Appendix), ask students to discuss the similarities and differences
between sending and receiving a ball with an open hand versus with a scoop. Students assess their safe
and active participation in class using the Thumbs-Up Strategy (see Appendix). Ask them to give reasons
for their rating and encourage students to share their responses orally in a large group discussion.

A&E - Consolidation

Teacher observation of students ability to self-assess their safe and active participation throughout the
lesson

Ideas for Extension

Competitive Wall Ball with Scoops

Students play Multi-Person Wall Ball as above but try to send the ball so the next player cannot receive it. Any
player who misses the ball is eliminated.
Games will restart quickly so no one player will be out of the game for more than a minute.

Next Steps

Students will apply skills and strategies to a modified game of jai alai.
