Centrifuge.

INTRODUCTION:
Centrifuge is a device for separation of solids from liquids. Solids which form a

porous cake can be separated in a centrifugal filter or a centrifuge. Slurry

which is to be filter is fed to a rotating basket having a perforated wall covered

with a filter medium such as filter cloth. Pressure resulting from the

centrifugal action forces the liquor through the filter medium, leaving the solids

behind. If the feed to the basket is then shut off and the cake of solids is spun

for a short time, much of the residual liquid in the cake drain off the particles,

leaving the solids much drier than those from a filter press or vacuum filter.

AIM:

Aim to calculate rate of filtration and relative centrifugal force.

INTRODUCTION:

Centrifuges for the separation of solids are called as centrifugal filter in this

particular case. In this particular process in which the solid phase is supported and

retained permeable membrane through which liquid phase is free to pass. Liquid

centrifugal separators may be considered as an extension of the first type. The use

of centrifuge covers a broad range of applications from the separation of gases of

different molecular wts. To the dewatering of coal.

PROCEDURE:

1. Take slurry of known concentration.

2. Cover basket with filter media.

3. Start centrifuge machine and allow for study state rotations.

4. Feed slurry slowly.

5. Note down time required for filtration of known volume of slurry.

6. Note down cake thickness obtained.

CALCULATIONS:

RCF = Relative centrifugal force

0.0000142 nDi

N = RPM of basket
Di = inside diameter of basket

Filtration rate

Q = Pw (r2 - r1)

------------------------

2 (mc /AL Aa + Rm / A2)

Q = vol. flow rate of filtrate

r 1 = inner liquid surface

r 2 = inner wall surface

= Average cake resistance

mc = mass of solid

AL = logarithmic mean of cake area.

Aa = Arithmetic mean cake areas.

Rm = Resistance of filter medium

A2 = Area of filter medium.

Dimension of and Rm is

Length / mass e.g. m/kg.

Mean cake areas

AL = 2 b (r2 r3)

1n r2/r3
Aa = (r2 \= r3) b

B = basket ht

R3 = inside surface of the cake
