TRACHEOSTOMY UPDATE:
PHYSICIAN IMPLICATIONS
A foam dressing should be used at the time of
tracheostomy insertion by the MD unless there is a medial
contraindication. The MD will document in the EMR if the
foam is contraindicated
All Tracheostomy sutures will be removed at 7 days post
operative by the MD. The MD will document in the EMR
suture removal
If the foam was not used at initial insertion, it should be
placed under the tracheostomy phlange after suture
removal

Tracheostomy Skin Care: Refer to the Lippincott


procedure: Tracheostomy cannula and stoma care
Tracheostomy Securement: Refer to Lippincott procedure:
Tracheostomy tie change.
Tracheostomy to be maintained in neutral position with no
tension/pulling to the side. Avoid downward direction of
the tracheostomy (e.g. towel roll may be placed under the
tracheostomy)
Flex extension tubing is approved only in patients with a
cervical collar
Do not use anti disconnect devices (e.g. rubberbands)
