CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study

As the world revolves, our environment has been experiencing sudden

changes like different calamities. Most ecological plans and projects involve
planting trees. Since not everyone can join tree planting programs they plant at
their homes. But some peoples concerns are about the growth of plants. There
are environment factors affecting the growth of plants such as the temperature,
water supply and supply of mineral nutrients. Agriculturist says that having good
soil condition and proper care can make plant grow in expected growth.

Everyday 90% of human being need liquid that help regulates its temperature
and other bodily function. Plants need liquid that help them produce foods. Since
a lot of people drink powdered milk every morning and most of them wasted one-
fourth glass of milk, the same with the other liquids such as water, soda and
orange juice. Turning it as an alternative substance that helps plant growth is an
idea for recycling wasted foods.

Mung bean (Vigna Radiata) is a plant species in the legume family. It is

commonly used int cooking - an ingredient in both savoury and sweet dishes.
Mung bean has importance source of vitamins and minerals like Vitamin C and
Calcium. Most of mung beans are planted in home gardens. This study seeks to
utilize mung bean as the main subject of the experiments.

B. Statement of the Problem

This study is conducted to determine the possibility of using liquids (powdered

milk, soda and orange juice) in mung beans growing system. The study aims to
answer the following question:

1. What are the characteristics of growth in mung beans plant according to:

Height
Life

2. Is there a significance different in the characteristics of growth in mung

beans plant watered with normal water powdered milk, soda, and orange
juice according to:

Height

Life

3. Is there a significance different in the acceptability of growth in mung

beans plant watered with normal water, powdered milk, soda and orange
juice?

C. Hypothesis of the Study

1. There is no significance difference of characteristic of growth in mung

beans plant watered with powdered milk, soda and orange juice
according to:

Height

Life

2. There is no significance difference in the acceptability of growth in mung

beans plants watered with powdered milk, soda and orange juice aside
from water since water is well known liquid that used in planting.

D. Theoretical Framework

Jan Ingen-Housz; a Dutch physiologist, biologist and chemist is the founder of

photosynthesis. According to the theory of photosynthesis, plants are classified as
autotrophs because they produce their needs in nutrients through photosynthesis.
Plants convert carbon dioxide and water into sugar fuel in addition of the energy
coming from the sun. The main product of rapid photosynthesis is called glucose.
Glucose is a carbohydrate, and is the important of sugar in human metabolism.
Liquids like water, powdered milk, soda and orange juice is mostly composed of
sugar. It has substances that plants needs and it somehow support the theory of
photosynthesis.

F. Significance of the Study

This study is conducted to determine the used of liquids that are found in our
kitchen in the growth of mung beans plant. Drinks that we can find in our kitchen
such as water, powdered milk, soda and orange juice are wasted after drinking. The
researchers give importance to those left overs and turned them into substances that
help the growth of mung beans plant.

G. Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on the growth of plants. Only mung beans were used in
planting. The time of observation will last two weeks. The evaluation and its
characteristic is based on how tall the plant is and how long will it last.

There are (4) four liquids that involves in this study. Water, powdered milk, soda
and orange juice were used in the experiment.

The experiment was conducted at the researchers residence.
