Shut down procedures for Electricians/Electrical

supervisors
Before starting any work on any electrical apparatus for fault finding,
disconnection, shifting, making bus for another apparatus, and installation of
new sub station/apparatus the following precautions shall be taken by the
Electrician / Supervisor .

STEP 1:

Precautions to be taken at the incoming control switch:

Isolate the power at two sources by switching off the circuit breakers
feeding power to the electrical apparatus intending to work on it by the
electrician/ supervisor himself. ( Follow the updated electrical lay
out )

Lock the isolator by key or bolt provided.

Tie the isolator with tape as an additional precaution.

Display the danger board and Men on line board with the name of
Electrician.

Lock the isolator with chain and lock as an additional precaution

wherever provided.
STEP 2 :

Precautions to be taken at the switches/ Electrical apparatus intending to

work on:

a) For fault finding:

Ensure isolation of power at two sources by following STEP 1.

Open the cover

Wear the gloves

Check for the power with multi meter for ensuring that there is
no power.

Rectify the problem.

Ensure removing of all tools, tackles, and other materials from

the switch/ apparatus.

Put on the cover and fasten all bolts.

Keep the personnel away from the switch.

 Put on power at control switch.( Person who has put- off the
switch has to put-on the switch )

b) For disconnection, shifting and making bus:

Ensure Isolation of power at two sources by following step 1 above.

Open the cover

Wear the gloves

Check for the power with multimeter/continuity tester for ensuring

the power

Disconnect /connect / bus the cable /switch

Shift the switches and cables and make the connections at new
locations

Ensure removing of all tools, tackles and other material

Put on the cover and fasten all the fasteners

Keep all the other persons away from the electrical equipment

Put on the power wearing the gloves.( Person who has put- off the
switch has to put-on the switch )
c) For installation of new sub-station/switch station /apparatus:

The incoming cable shall be connected to the feeder controlling switch,

only after completing the installation work.

STEP 3:

Precautions to be taken while put on the power i.e. incoming control switch by
the same electrician / supervisor who has made off the switch

Check for displaying of any other MEN ON LINE board, or

tying with tape, locking with any other chain.

If not found any other than your own locks and display boards,
remove the locks, tape etc.

Wear the gloves.

Put on the isolator.

Put on the circuit breaker.

STEP 4:

In case other MEN ON LINE board is found on the same switch, do not put
on the power till the other electrician / supervisor completes his work.

STEP 5:

The power shall be put on by the same person who has put off and the same
shall not be delegated.

STEP 6 :

In case the work is extended to next shift, the person, who has put off the
power and displayed the MEN ON LINE board shall personally give charge
to successor electrician/ supervisor at work spot.
