(Adapted from edTPA Lesson Planning Template)

INFORMATION ABOUT THE LESSON

CONTENT TOPIC
Winter clothing (8 words: coat, hat, mittens, gloves, boots, scarf, snow pants, ear
muffs)
- Colors are also be taught, but not explicitly.

OUTCOME(S)
SIOP Lesson Preparation
1. Content Objectives
I CAN:
- Identify and name winter clothing by words and pictures
- Arrange winter clothes according to where they are worn on the body
- Label winter clothing
MATCH OF EXPECTATIONS TO YOUR STUDENT(S):
- Student already knows the routine of learning words through pictures and
repeated practice. By pointing to the parts of the body will using flash cards
she will be able to identify where the articles are worn on the body more
easily. I have color cards with the names of the color in that color to help her
know which color is to be used. We will repeat the words and point to each in
order for her to remember each of the words that go with the article of
clothing. She did really great the last time we used this beginning routine, so
I think it is a good idea to start the lesson in the same way.

PRIOR LEARNING/PRIOR THINKING

SIOP Building Background
7. Concepts Explicitly Linked to Students Background Experiences
- I will ask the question, have you ever had to wear winter clothes? If she
says yes or says she knows winter clothes the beginning might be repetitive
for her. I will be using a picture to see how much of the clothing she can
identify before we go through the flashcards. This part of the lesson will help
me to understand how much prior knowledge she will be bringing into this
lesson.

This English vocabulary will be new to most students, though some may know some
of the words.

LESSON IMPLEMENTATION
SIOP Comprehensible Input
10. Speech Appropriate for Student(s) Proficiency Level
INTRODUCTION/ELICIT PRIOR KNOWLEDGE
SIOP Building Background
7. Concepts Explicitly Linked to Students Background Experiences
Do you know what clothes are worn in the winter?
Have you ever worn winter clothing before?
- This will help me understand what knowledge she already has of the topic.
- We will write this down on the picture of a person in winter clothes, no matter
what word she uses for the different clothing. If they are completely off then I
will correct her and we will write down the correct word for the item.

FOCUS/PURPOSE STATEMENT

clothing, labeling of clothing )
BODY OF LESSON
- Ask what she knows about the clothes we wear in the winter. (this will help to
activate prior knowledge if she has any)
- Use picture to see if she can identify the winter articles of clothing and so
that I can help her list and identify the clothing that she may not know.
- Flashcards to check to see how familiar she is with the clothing words. We will
repeat this until she can correctly identify the clothing with little prompting
from me.
- Using the cut of clothing pieces, she will identify them using the words we
have practices with the flashcards.
- She will then color the clothes according to what has previously been
decided. I have names of colors on card with corresponding color so she can
color them correctly even if she doesnt know the names of the colors
Coat = Red
Hat = Yellow
Mittens = Blue
Gloves = Green
Boots = Black
Scarf = Purple
Snow Pants = Pink
Ear Muffs = Orange
- She will glue on the pieces of cut out clothing to the corresponding place on
the picture.
- Finally she will write the name of the article of clothing next to the line on the
page.
- We will talk about the articles one last time and this will be the end of the
lesson.

CLOSURE
SIOP Review/Assessment
30. Assessment of Student Comprehension and Learning (this can be
formative or summative)
- The labeling of clothing will be a summative assessment of whether or not
she learned what the different articles of clothing are. Throughout the lesson
we will repeat the words, by having the academic language repeated she will
most likely remember the language that goes with the articles.
