Article 1: The Pride

The Lion or Panthera Leo is one of the four big cats in the genus
Panthera and a member of the family Felidae. Lions live for 10-14
years in wild, while in captivity they can live longer than 20 years. In
the wild, males seldom live longer than 10 years, as injuries sus-
tained from continual fighting with rival male greatly reduce their
Longetivity. Lions are usually characterized for being in one com-
munity or pride but a pride of lions consist of many females and
very few males, sometimes even one.

Article 2: The Emperor

The Emperor Scorpion is also referred to as the Imperial Scorpion. They
have long been a type of Scor-
pion that people are afraid of.
Not only does the fear of a ven-
omous creature bother them, it
is also the very large size of this
particular one that has people
fearful. The good news though
is that the venom they produce
isnt nearly as potent as that of
many other species of Scorpi-
ons. The sting from one though
is going to be a very painful ex-
perience. These are the one
species of Scorpions that can By Grech
be up to 8 inches long. The Picture above is a Emperor scorpion in a
males are usually about 6 inches long. They black light mode.
have a very beautiful shiny dark color. They look greenish when they are
under ultra-violet light. What colors they will display though really de-
pends on where their habitat is. These are living creatures that have a sur-
vival that will depend on them remaining well hidden from predators.
What is interesting is that they are
white when they are young. This is
why so many people often mistake
what they are seeing as another
species of Scorpion at that young
age. You will notice that their pinch-
ers are wider than that of other spe-
cies. They also have a bigger overall
abdomen and a tail that is very
long. They are considered to be
creepy looking to many people!

FUN FACT:
The Emperor scorpion is the sec-

the world.

scorpions are nocturnal and need some hiding places)

Tarantulas comprise a group of often

hairy and very large arachnids belonging to
the Theraphosidae family of spiders, of
which approximately 900 species have
been identified. This article only describes
members of Theraphosidae, although some
other members of the same suborder are
commonly referred to as "tarantulas". Most
species of tarantulas are not dangerous to
humans, and some species have become By Lee Darrel M. Pareja

Article 4: The Bloom

Sunflowers are large flowers containing vast quantities of seeds, mounted

on wide upward growing stalks that are a wonder of plant architecture. The Sun-
flower is a name that actually comprises three very similar annual plants that
grow in various situations in Caelereth. To different races they are a sign of positiv-
ity: happiness, cheer, even luck, health and hope represent thesun to cer-
tain elven tribes, and may also be given in bouquets as a symbol of long life,
health and happiness. All types are easy to cultivate as the seeds are not very
difficult to collect, and as long as they are grown in a sunny spot, they grow
magnificently.

In general Sunflowers have blossoms composed of yellow, orange or red

rays of petals fanning around disks with smaller yellow, brown, blue or purple
petals. The wild Sunflower grows to be about 2 peds tall, while certain cultivated
varieties will grow to reach 6 peds if properly supported. The solitary blossom is
supported by a green stem that in some cases is only barred from being a trunk
by the fact that it has no woody tendancy.

The banana flower is a large, dark purple-red blossom that grows from the
end of a bunch of bananas. Its sizable bracts, or leaves, snugly enclose delicate,
sweetly scented male flowers. The female flowers, which do not
require fertilization to become fruit, grow farther up the stem from the male flow-
ers.

The banana flower is treated in several Asian and tropical cuisines as a vege-
table. These terms are variously translated as banana blossom, banana heart,
due to the flower's physical resemblance to that organ, or plantain blossom.
Once the tougher, darker outer bracts are pulled away, the paler and more ten-
der inner leaves are used in a number of dishes, prepared in a variety of ways.

Function. The banana tree, or herb, bears only one

bunch of bananas before dying. Luckily, it shoots a new
"eye" (a baby plant) before dying, the entire process only
taking about ten years. In the example, banana tree 1

Article 6: The Colony
16

Ants are common insects, but they have some unique capabilities.
More than 10,000 known ant species occur around the world. They are espe-
cially prevalent in tropical forests, where they may be up to half of all the in-
sects living in some locations.

Ants look much like termites, and the two are often confused, especially
by nervous homeowners. Enthusiastically social insects, ants typically live in
structured nest communities that may be located underground, in ground-
level mounds, or in trees. Carpenter ants nest in wood and can be destruc-
tive to buildings. Some species, such as army ants, defy the norm and do not
have permanent homes, instead seeking out food for their enormous colo-
nies during periods of migration.

Ant communities are headed by a queen or queens, whose function in

life is to lay thousands of eggs that will ensure the survival of the colony. Work-
ers (the ants typically seen by humans) are wingless females that never repro-
duce, but instead forage for food, care for the queen's offspring, work on the
nest, protect the community, and perform many other duties.

The picture above shows how ants coop-
erate to get food fro the colony.
FUN FACT:
The total ant population makes our 7 billion
look weak. It is estimate that there are up-
wards of 10,000,000,000,000,000 individual
ants alive on Earth at any given time.
