The Gospel of Luke says that the chief of angels, Gabriel came to Mary to announce to
her that she would give birth to a Son and she should call him Jesus and that he would
save people from their sins. Mary said "How can this happen to me? I am a virgin!" The
angel said "With God, anything can happen! When Joseph found out that Mary was
pregnant, he thought about what he should do. If he married her, he would be unclean.
He decided to privately break the engagement. But then he had a dream. An angel told
him that the baby was THE SON OF GOD.

At this time, the Roman Emperor, Caesar Augustus, made a law that everyone in the
Roman Empire must pay tax. Everyone had to go back to the town that their family
came from, to have their name put on the tax lists. Joseph came from Bethlehem, which
was called THE CITY OF DAVID. Joseph took Mary to Bethlehem and she gave birth
to the baby, Jesus, in an animal shed, because there was no room for them.

According to the tradition of our church, Virgin Mary, the THEOTOKOS, died, after
having lived a holy life. The surviving apostles were present and conducted her funeral.
However Thomas was delayed and arrived a few days later. He said that he would not
believe this had happened unless he saw the body of Mary. Peter expressed dismay that
Thomas continued to doubt what the other apostles told him. Upon opening the tomb,
Thomas revealed that he had witnessed the absent body of the THEOTOKOS being
taken to heaven by angels. Though every Orthodox Christian believes this to be true, ALSO READ
our church has never formally made it a doctrine. It remains a holy mystery. The Syriac
Orthodox Church celebrates this event on the 15th of August. This was around 56 A.D. "FALLING LEAVES"
in sounder novels, after she had lived most probably 70 years.

THE HISTORY OF THE 3 DAYS LENT IN OUR CHURCH
Bar Ebroyo narrates the history of this fast as follows in his Eccleciastical History: "The
people in the East began the fast, which is being observed three days after the Epiphany, in
this time (i.e. the time of Catholicos Hananeshu, who became the Catholicos in A.D.686).
When Abdul Malik the son of Morwon heard of the beauty of the women in Hirto, he asked
the Governor there to send all the virgins to him. As this command came, the governor started
to gather all the virgins. Then all the Christians came together in the church, and prayed and
fasted. They prostrated before the Lord and appealed Him to save them from this punishment.
On the third day when their Bishop John was reading the gospel he got a revelation about the
death of Abdul Malik, and he revealed it to the people. After some days, this news was
confirmed. It is said that, from this time onwards the believers observe this fast. But some
others say that this fastwas begun in the East when the king Quzra Abroose prepared to rape

A lot of people died in the village of Beth Garme because of a fast spreading infectious
disease. The Bishop of that diocese Mor Sabarisho summoned the people for a public prayer.
He said them The most virtuous God has showed mercy to the people of Nineveh and
withdrew from the intended punishment according to the words of Prophet Jonah. How much
more will He show mercy to us, who believe in Him, His Messiah, and in His Holy Spirit?
And the people obeyed him. They came together and supplicated to God intensively. All,
including the infants, have worn sack clothes. And God has removed the infectious disease for
them. As theEast Syrian Catholicose Thimothi (he died in AD 819) took charge as
catholicose, he ordered these 3 days prayer and fast to be continued annually. And this Lent
should be known as the lent of Anger and not as the lent of Nineveh

"FALLING LEAVES"
My eyes became moist the first time I saw them fall
It looked like the great hold of security had given way
The leaves had been the part of the tree
Giving it its grandeur and pride among everything else

I waited and watched every day

Wishing the leaves would get up and join the tree again
My thoughts of a miracle did fade with every day
With every moment which made the leaves wither away

As the leaves withered I noticed new ones sprouting out

Giving the tree a new look and a new chapter to play
I kept wondering whether they could replace the old ones
And bring back the ones withering away

With time the old leaves disappeared into the background

And I knew there was a reason for this way
The new leaves didnt replace the old ones
Instead they taught me a whole new story to say

everyone. But it is very unfortunate that even
though having more than 100 parish members and
