Steering columns are designed to be collapsible upon impact. The steering column consists of solid steering
shaft with a lower joint assembly. Turn signal, headlight, ignition and windshield washer/wiper switches are
part of the combination switch that is mounted on steering column. Combination switch can be serviced by
removing steering wheel and column covers.
Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), drivers side air bag is located in horn pad with clockspring that is part of
the combination switch. See SERVICE PRECAUTIONS before servicing these units.
SERVICE PRECAUTIONS
Disconnect negative battery cable for 10 minutes before servicing. To ensure complete discharge, turn
headlights on. Observe precautions as follows:
z Always wear protective gloves when handling deployed or damaged air bag modules.
z Never service wiring or electrical components with air bag connected.
z DO NOT allow steering shaft to rotate freely during servicing.
z Always wear safety glasses when handling air bag modules.
The SRS air bag diagnostic unit contains a back-up power supply. Air bag system back-up power supply must
be de-energized before servicing any SRS Air Bag components. Disconnect negative battery cable and WAIT
10 minutes before servicing air bag system components. To ensure complete discharge, turn headlights on.
ACTIVATING
After servicing SRS air bag components, connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch on, while viewing
air bag indicator light. If light illuminates for 4-8 seconds and goes out, system is operating as designed. If light

See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
1. Remove steering wheel and combination switch. See STEERING WHEEL and COMBINATION
SWITCH . Disconnect ignition switch connectors.
2. Using a hammer and chisel, make a groove in steering lock assembly shear bolts. See Fig. 1 . Remove
shear bolts with a flat blade screwdriver. Remove steering lock assembly. To install, reverse removal
procedure. Tighten NEW shear bolts evenly, until heads break off.
STEERING COLUMN
1. Position front wheels straight ahead. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove steering wheel and
combination switch. See STEERING WHEEL and COMBINATION SWITCH . Remove steering
lock assembly. See STEERING LOCK ASSEMBLY .
2. On Sephia, Spectra and Rio models, remove lower panel. On all models, mark steering shaft assembly to
intermediate shaft "U" joint for installation reference. Remove steering shaft assembly to intermediate
shaft "U" joint bolt. Separate steering "U" joint from intermediate shaft. See Fig. 2 or Fig. 3 . Remove
steering column upper bracket bolts. Remove steering column.
3. On Sportage models, remove OBD-II Data Link Connector screws attaching it to mounting bracket.
