EXPERIMENT NO: 2

AIM: To study working three phase Full converter .

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: To study working of three phase full converter along

with relation of output voltage with firing angle for R and RL load.

EQUIPMENTS REQUIRED: Experimental kit, Connecting probes, DSO/CRO

(unearthed), Multi meter

THEORY:

Three phase converters

Three phase converters provide higher average output voltage.
Frequency of ripples on output voltage is higher compared with that of single
phase converter.
Thus the filtering requirements for smoothing out load current & load voltage are
simpler.
For these reasons, three phase converters are extensively used in high power
variable speed drivers.

Three Phase Full Wave Controlled Rectifier with RL load:

The operation of three phase full converter is divided into 6 modes.
In each interval two devices conducts simultaneously and that corresponding line
voltage appears across the load.

The conduction angle of each device is 1200.

There are six pulses in one cycle of supply voltage. Therefore, this type of converter is
also called as six pulse converter.

Operation of three phase full converter for RL load.:

Interval From To Conducting Load voltage

Devices
1 (30 + ) (90 + ) 6,1 VRY
2 (90 + ) (150 + ) 1,2 VRB
3 (150 + ) (210 + ) 2,3 VYB
4 (210 + ) (270 + ) 3,4 VYR
5 (270 + ) (330 + ) 4,5 VBR
6 (330 + ) (390 + ) 5,6 VBY

In mode 1 S6 and S1 conducts. From (30 + ) to (90 + ) VRY appears across the load.

PROCEDURE:
1. Connect Three phase transformer to connectors from control card & connect 3
phase to I/P Side of 3 phase full converter.
2. Observe R, Y, B of secondary of transformer w.r.t. Neutral on power-scope.
Confirm that phase sequence is correct. Note down values of all phase and line
voltages.
3. Observe O/P of firing angle control.
4. Measure firing angle at firing angle control.

It will be = ( 1800 ( Ton*1800/10))

5. Observe gate drive of SCR1 to SCR6 on power-scope. From that you can know
conducting SCR pair & also next incoming SCR.
6. Also observe and draw control signals.
7. Connect resistive load across O/P terminals.
8. Vary firing angle from minimum to maximum & observe its effect on output
across load. Also observe that ripple frequency is 6 times line frequency.
