Alejandro Gmez Arias was one of the leaders of the student movement that

achieved UNAMs autonomy. His thought is essential to understand what

autonomy represents for the university. Basically, what autonomy means is the

non-intervention of the government. This essay provides an analysis of

Comentarios a la autonoma, one of Gmez Arias speeches. This will allow us to

give a definition of autonomy that is closer to the original meaning of the word.

Some Michel Foucauts ideas will guide this text. According to the French

intellectual, the function of universities and teaching systems is to control

individuals. This thesis is the point of departure of the present work.
