Portfolio Assignments
Name:

In this course, you are required to maintain a portfolio about your


experiences in dance class. The purpose for these portfolio
assignments is to allow you to document and reflect upon your
experiences in dance class. It is also an opportunity for us to
communicate about dance class.

There are five (5) different portfolio assignments


Portfolio assignments will be submitted approximately every
two weeks
Keep all portfolio assignments together in a duo tang
All portfolio assignments should be typed unless otherwise
directed

Assignment Instructions:

You have just begun taking Dance class at Alexander Mackenzie


Secondary School. In this assignment, you are asked to reflect on
your feelings as you begin the class and set some goals for the
upcoming semester.

1) Find a picture that represents your feelings towards dance as


you begin this semester. You may draw the picture,
photocopy it, download it or cut it out of a magazine.

2) Give your written reflection a unique title.

3) Write a one-page reflection about dance class by answering


the questions below. Try to give as much detail as possible
so I can get to know you and learn what areas you want to
work on in dance class.

a) How do you feel about dance in general?


b) How do you view yourself as a dancer right now?
c) How does your picture relate to those feelings?
d) What goals do you hope to accomplish at the end of this
semester?
e) How do you plan to accomplish those goals?

Assignment Instructions:

During the first evaluation of the Cultural Dance Performances,


you will be assigned one group performance to critically analyze.

You will be asked to fill out a chart to record your thoughts and
ideas about the choreography, the music and the costumes as
well as provide feedback that the dancers can use to improve
their performances.

Assignment Instructions:

There are numerous dance studios in Barrie and the surrounding


area. For this portfolio assignment, you are asked to research one
local dance studio.

1) Create a scrapbook page for the dance studio that you


researched. Appropriate scrapbook items that could be
included are pamphlets from the dance studio, clippings
from websites, pictures of dancers from the studio, an
interview with dance teacher or studio owner, etc.

2) Write a reflection that answers the following questions:

a) Why did you choose to research this particular dance studio?


b) Name two groups of people in our community who benefit
from the dance studios. Explain how they benefit.
c) List two ways the dance studio could give back to the
community. Be creative!

Assignment Instructions:

A dance performance can be a powerful entity and can help to


draw attention to a social or environmental cause in our school or
local community. In this portfolio assignment, you are asked to
select an event at our school and suggest a way that our dance
class could help to contribute to the success of the event.

1) Select a school event from your school agenda.

2) In one paragraph, describe your ideas for how a dance class


could contribute to this event by providing the following
information:

a) Specific date and time & rationale for choice

b) Specific song & rationale for choice

c) Specific costume & rationale for choice
